I knew all of those things. I'll add one that many dont know (if you are a hardware person you do). you CAN actually swap bluray drives between systems. The drives themselves are interchangeable but the board that interfaces is not. So anyone who has a dead optical drive can just get a replacement and swap the interface board and be back to reading discs in no time. I've had to do this myself on both a 20gb B01 as well as a 40gb L01 unit.

you can also replace the spinning hdd with an SSD for improved (not life changing) performance as well as quieter and cooler system reliability. The physical spinning drives draw more current and generate heat as a result. Using an SSD means no moving parts and thus will have less current draw and reduced fan noise from not having to spin as much as usual to offset any heat generated by the spinning hdd.

I never even thought of that. If I can ever track down a reasonable true backward compatibility one the first thing I'll do is ssd it up.

I actually have three B01 units. 1 worked but had cosmetic issues and the other two had their own issues like YLOD and no video display. so I took them all apart and cobbled all the good looking exterior pieces to form a good working (and looking) unit. The hard part was removing the bulk of the surface scuffs but i used a plastic polish that is for headlight repair and that did the trick. It looks all shiny and new. It now just sits on my shelf next to a chrome/black 80gb E01 and gun metal 40gb Metal Gear Solid H01.

The two remaining B01 units im not sure what I will do with them as they are really just parts machines but i imagine with a bit of work they could be restored to their former glory.

I didn't know PS3 allowed screenshots to be taken. I knew that about PSV and every subsequent PS so far has a dedicated button for that but I didn't know that PS3 did that, too.

shinoff218320d ago

Darth,

You ever hear of those Frankenstein ps3s. I'm personally not sure I could do something like that. Could be a little off but they basically mix parts from a slim into a fat ps3. It said to keep it cooler to prevent overheating and such.

For the moment as far as ps2 aside from my collection since the disc won't work I've just dabbled a bit on the series x dev mode. It's pretty good.

Took my PS3 out the other week and plugged it in, it has the Red Light of Death. RIP

Still one of my favorite Playstations next to the Playstations that came before it and after it.

You missed some great games then. Especially the variety. Ps3 lacked compared to before and after.

It had great games but it lacked compared to every other ps system. The variety went out the window. Game budgets got higher that's when developers stopped taking chances. Indies weren't quite going full speed like the ps4 generation. It's my least favorite of all the Playstation. Also jrpgs disappeared like a mf, there were some but sht compared to previous gens.

TiredGamer20d ago

Agreed. My favorite gen next to PS1. The leap from jagged PS2 games with blurry textures to HD bliss like in Ridge Racer 7 or Motor Storm was unbelievable.

PS4 was just a refinement of PS3 games, and PS5 is just so more spit-and-polish on top that.

Sloppy article spouting mostly well-known informaton. As for the screenshot tidbit, it only works for SOME games, the way they write it makes it seem like it works across every game, but no, the game developer has to specifically program this function within the game.

Some games have a camera that you can use to take pictures and that translates to screenshots you can view on XMB, such as MGS 3, MGS 4, MGS PW HD.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave34m ago(Edited 34m ago)

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

-Foxtrot19m ago(Edited 6m ago)

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

JEECE4m ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

That’s just laughable to me. I think they’ve squeezed all they can out of an 12 year old game

mastershredder1d 19h ago

"Easily" because they see mods, says the gamer. To heck with licensing, terms agreements conditions, etc. all you need to do is belive in mods. Yeah, so real superficial BS yo.

CrimsonWing691d 9h ago

Do people not want to play a new game? Like, I’d rather see 6 than just a prettier version of a game we’ve been playing since the 360/PS3 gen…

Popsicle1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

Yes please. Did pretty much everything there was to do in this game. Took a very long time and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Skyrim is one of my all-time favorites, but I would prefer a new experience.

anast1d 6h ago

They might as well. So far, it looks like ES6 will be mostly developed by AI.

Smellsforfree1d 2h ago

I don't want a next-gen version of a game I've already played to death. Skyrim was a great game, but I'm over it.
