However, that was the same thing as before, mg4, lbp, resistance, motorstorm, valkyrie, etc..non of them really dented the 360 one year advantage lead.. so is killzone 2 going to be any different..

i think it will make a similar impact as mg4, but i am not sure it will turn the tide. Perhaps if kz2 came with a significant system price cut hmmm

Because the 360 had absolutely no game lineup in 2008. It ended with Gears and fable that sold well, but Lips/Your'reInTheMovies/Banjo all sold less than 100k.

So is "year Of" mean that a console that sold 2 games at the end of 365 days is the winner by one period? Because MGS4/GT5p have outsold Gears & Fable. Yeah, they came out earlier, but... time is never relevant to fanboys.

I mean the one thing I understand, is its definitely not about Game Quality and # of good games. That clearly isn't the definition of "year of", or were people betting on a more expensive PS3 outselling the least expensive consoles? lol. So sad. All these one-sided "YAY US" articles are getting a bit ridiculous. Wake me up when the PS3 is no longer at a premium price, and competitively priced.

2008 Was the year of the PS3 due to the following:

1. 2007, we all said 2008 would provide better games.
2. 2008 had better games than the 360.
3. PS3 had less hardware failure than the 360 in 2008.
4. PS3 firmware Updates
5. Home

The 360 had no gaming accolades in 2008 except buying PS related games, and even still to this day. Everyone is pretending that they are going to find out about the super secret 360 lineup at E3 mid year. You aren't, its going to be another purchased/borrowed game, Mass Effect2/ALanWake, and probably another Halo game. There was no big secret at E3 except for FF13 folks. And thats not even due till 2010.

To this day, the 360 doesn't even have any gaming news on N4G outside of flamebait articles. What are you looking forward to outside of games that are on the wall, but no media/details/preview/intervie ws/anything? And on top of that, what exclusives are you looking forward to that have any media/details/preview/intervie ws/anything? Ninja Blade? And people DARE to try to compare the 2008 ps3 and 2009 lineup? Please. The PS3 had a better 2008 lineup, its 2009 lineup is already superior. 360 fans will just have to wait to see whats due, like 2008. And when LBP-Killer-Banjo comes out, less than 150k people buy it. Say what you will about sales, but hey.. Better, is always subjective. But MS placed rules on "BETTER" when they decided to use Metacritic to describe how amazingly well scoring their game lineups is, compared to Sony. Now, Sony's games are all better by that definition, so whats the rush to play the teacher of a special kids classroom and call everyone a winner?

I'm sorry but there is definitely some credit due on Sony's behalf for 2008. It was a year with constant good games, and firmware updates, plus home beta, and eventually open beta. KZ2 beta. I mean, Gamers that had a PS3 were in heaven the entire year. Thats why everyone said 2008 was going to be Sony's year, and it delivered. Because 2008 was the lineup that 2007 should have had.

This always happens whenever its pointed out that MS is bsing. Just like the graphics issue with Killzone2. - going off topic - That game has been bashed to death for sony lying about 4D, and that the graphics will never reach that level by everyone. Now that its clear that KZ2 is second to none, graphics dont matter anymore. Just COD4style Gameplay. Instead of the media collectively giving Sony a bone, they just complain because you cant use circle to crouch. Its ridiculous. COD4/Gears2/Halo3/RE5/FALLOUT/ GTA4 all praised for how amazing the graphics are. Then KZ2 comes along now we get "Do graphics really matter?" or "Yeah it looks good, so what?" Articles. Instead of the same level of acknowledgement given.

I'm not making anything up. 2008 Sony had a clear advantage for its lineup, just as Microsoft had a amazing 2007 lineup. Everyone can always agree that MS did a good job with something, but now you have a case to where numerically, you can prove Sony had a "better" year, and MS is still getting credit for having it. Which is fine, Sony needs to speak up. But as gamers, im not going to pretend I dont see the clear difference here.

Let's be honest, if were talking sales, the 360 and the Wii literally obliterate the ps3's game sales. That attachment rate, the fact that Wii Fit is still selling, and the DS still toppling the psp. It certainly wasn't the year of the ps3 or Sony in that regard. And although I strongly disagree on who had the "most" exclusives as someone always manages to make up their own lists, I do believe the ps3 had the most wanted and best two exclusives; Littlebigplanet and Metal Gear Solid 4. But sadly enough, Gears 2 will likely sell more copies than those two combined, or already has. On the bright side if Killzone 2 does as well as expected and Square Enix can release FF13 I'm quite sure Sony has a better chance of claiming the "year of" title. And yes I know it's coming to the 360 FF13, but I no doubt believe it will look, play, and sell better on the ps3. Let's be reasonable, 2009 is going to be the year that exclusives matter. Because every famous franchise is now multiplatform.

No that's not it. It's the fact that Nintendo is trying to change the industry in a way that makes games no longer a fanatic hobby for the otaku and hardcore gaming crowd but rather an "approachable medium" so that our Grand parents and extended family can pick up a controller. This sounds fine for a family, but it's a complete kick in the face to the fanatic core gamer who have supported Nintendo all these years. So it isn't that our arguments are "irrelevant" but that were merely showing our backs to Nintendo the same way they have.

I do agree with you that Nintendo is winning, pretty much at everything. Hell most of us have grown up with Nintendo and I wouldn't trade mine for anything. But if Nintendo had realized beforehand the massive change they are seeing now, Metroid, Zelda, and Mario would not have been released as they were this generation. Their next incarnations will be a step back, I guarantee it, in an attempt to be more "appealing" to the casual. -First of all too many people over react about the consequences of nintendo changing the industry. Have you seen the wii's 2009 line up? If youv'e actually considered it then you will realise there are plenty of hardcore titles out there and even nintendo developed ones (sin and punishment comes to mind). Yes there is shovelware but that is nothing new looking at the ps2. As long as hardcore games keep being produced (madworld, mushroom men, conduit :) ) then I couldn't care less about the shovelware its not like I had to pay for it. I suppose the millions of teenage girls buying ps2's to play buzz or singstar wasn't a problem for the hardcore last gen was it. Yes I can see them all enjoying gears of war now.

I could turn your last sentence on you and argue that nintendo are turning their backs on the hardcore because as each generation goes on the hardcore have consitently turned their backs on them. They didn't want the wii to sell less than the Gamecube so they went down sony's route of the last 2 generations and are paying dividends.

Nintendo deserve recognition if you like them or not. Many 'hardcore' don't even consider the wii which is strange because I though true hardcore gamers play the games they like no matter what the public think of them. But if you ignore the wii you are missing out on some truly fantastic games this gen.

B the same yardstick how does anybody dare say that the issues HAVE been fixed? They can't. MS can't, nobody can. I have a friend who says that the 360 he got late Nov was a Jasper and he's sent it away twice(or got another obne back after the first I'm not sure)when first it wouldn't read disks and secondly wouldn't power up at all. He hever RROD'd but still the reliablity for him hadn't got better.
I now this is just one guy and maybe he was unlucky but storuies of the Jasper failing aren't that rare atm(may be misguided though as one story I saw just assumed the two 360s they spoke of with RROD were Jasper soards because they were bought after OCT08 which obviously means nothing for sure.
So it goes on and shows that nobody can yet claim the Jasper has worked or still breaks too easily. Even if it had def worked nobody should be claiming that finally after all this time and three revisions their product might not fail as much is anything to be proud of in any way-well done t should have always worked and it doesn't fill you with hope either. Just something I'd have left out I feel.
Oh and 2008 wasn't really the 360's was it? Five good weeks at the end of the year dn't quite do it for me I'm afraid. Gears2 is VERY good but it isn't so good it makes everything Sony did right disappear.

Gears of War 2, the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: World at War and the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead sold as many copies as every PS3 game combined. Those three games covered the PS3's entire spread (which was a little over 3.5 million copies) and all told, Xbox 360 games obliterated the PS3's numbers by selling roughly 9 million copies total.

I love how the base the 3 best games according to sales and thats why there are better, why didn't they mention that none of those game came close to Wii Fit, Wii Play or Wii Sports sales so then because of that it must be the Year of the Wii right. Why did they failed to mention that it took a price cut to finally beat the more expensive PS3 that was beating it almost the entire year prior. What a joke Only fanboys base anything on sales and not quality every time they get owned they run to software/hardware sales. I read the article but I made my comment in response to what cereal_killa wrote. I see he said it was only November NPD. That's a lot of software sold for the 360 in one country in one month! Around the world the numbers balance out a little I think but the 360 is still winning the sales battle at the moment.

So that means that 2008 was not the year of the Playstation. Neither was it the year of 360 however. As for who won last year with quality of games I think its a toss-up. Both X-360 and PS3 had solid lineups.

As for next year though Sony looks like it has way more exclusives than the xbox, but whether those exclusives translate into sales is the big question here for Sony. (The only big seller last year was MGS4).

The 360 has many high quality 3rd party titles also landing on its platform, and at a cheaper price might entice consumers more than the relatively expensive Playstation. I hear that production costs are way down on the PS3 and now would be an excellent time for them to drop the price.

P.S. and bring back backward compatibility dammit!

I wouldn't call it dominated, but Sony is doing bloody well for having a higher price point. It just shows that the PS3 isn't the failed, overly priced console so many fanboys like to say it is. I would have agreed with that early in its life ($600 blah), but Sony has done a great job to bring everything together now. I wouldn't have shelled out money for one earlier this year, but now I regret that I can't afford to get one.

No Gears 2 and Fable 2 are great games. That's all. MGS4, for me, is above most games. You simply can't compare the storytelling in Gears to the storytelling in MGS4. You can't compare the length, or the gameplay. The online in MGS4 was awesome. It gets a lot of hate, because of its problems, but then Gears 2 had its own problems. MGO was awesome and unique.

Fable 2 is just the kind of game the PS3 is lacking. But it certainly doesn't trump the list of exclusives I gave.

The 360 got embarrased by the graphical superiority of PS3's games in 2008 - it started with GT5:Prologue. Then MGS4. Then Wipeout HD. Killzone 2 is just around the corner and then we will surely see which is the more powerful system. We've already seen which system has the most games coming out for it.

EDIT @ urban bohemian: A setup of PC and PS3 is the best. I'm going to miss out on games; but the way I see it is that I don't have the time or money to buy every game anyway, so I'm going to be missing out whatever I do. I tried L4D and didn't like it, but I could have bought it if I wanted to. Braid's PC port is incoming. I've played Portal on my PC, it's available on PS3, and a few maps isn't that much to get excited about. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix was released on PS3 (again, I'm not a huge fighter fan so I'm not getting this one).

I'm not saying the 360 had a bad lineup in 2008, but it was considerably weaker than the PS3's.

The 360 released it's 2 main racing franchises in 07 with PGR4 and Forza 2 so 08 didn't have an exclusive racer due to the development cycle. 09 should bring in a few new exclusive racing games with Forza 3 and Race Pro.

People continue to post these passive aggressive remarks to point out the whole 360/PC not console exclusive BS, but let us be honest here. The gaming community as a whole, DEEP DOWN, doesn't really care when something goes from a console to the PC and by and large, don't consider it a real loss of exclusivity. The real stinging and attention grabbing events, in this ridiculous console war, have always been console to console. Some good examples (rumored or confirmed) may be Devil May Cry, Bioshock, Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, Virtual Fighter, Fatal Inertia, MGS4, and Grand Theft Auto. Some of those I would categorize as industry meaningful news that should grab attention. You can try making the PC/360 thing bigger than it really is. But the gaming community really doesn't care, otherwise you would see alot more hype surrounding Xbox to PC events. Halo, Halo 2, L4D and Gears are perfect examples. It seems to me, the only ones who really care, are those looking to rub it in the 'other' console fans faces.

If Halo, Fable, MGS4, Gears or GOW goes to the competing CONSOLE then we'll talk. Otherwise Massahud, nice try.

All great games. I just got a MGS4 PS3 bundle.. and the only games that I have bought or even wanted were MGS4 and LBP. Maybe that Naruto game cause the demo was interesting. And the only game I have on reserve so far is Killzone 2.

But seriously the 360 hardware will never beat the Ps3 (this is not talking about games which are software). Its just a numbers game, if you want a full multimedia experience than the PS3 is your best bet (much better DVD upscaler, blu-ray player, web browser, multimedia storage [bittorrent], bluetooth mouse, keyboard, mic and free online). Of course the cost of this is makes the PS3 out of reach for some and if you dont have an HDTV than you dont even need to bother glancing at the PS3.

Microsoft has done a good job of putting a true next-gen console on the market for a very low price and backing it with some amazing titles.

From a software perspective Sony bridged the gap in 2008 and 2009 looks to be no different.

Also I read some interesting sales numbers stating the Xbox 360 has sold 28 million units worldwide while the PS3 has sold 20 million. But not so fast XBOTS, since the 360 has been out for 14 months longer the PS3 has actually outpaced it in sales.

This article is complete fanboy crap, LBP is a flop since it didnt sell 1 million in a day, but never mentions that it is the SECOND HIGHEST RATED CONSOLE EXCLUSIVE OF ALL TIME. Seriously XBOTS never bring up LBP, it is a great reason to own a PS3 and undoubtedly a top contender for GOTY 2008.

Well, I'm not going to say that 2009 wont be year of the 360, but I will say this:

When the PS3 hits $299 this year (which it should) I think the PS3 and 360 will be going back to selling about the same amount of consoles monthly in the U.S. At that point the 360 MAY still outsell the PS3 by like 100,000- 200,000 units monthly over here, but I don't expect the gap to be that much larger between the PS3 and 360 with a PS3 at $299 in the U.S.

As far as Europe goes, the Killzone 2 PS3 bundles says "Hi", and IF Gran Turismo 5 comes out this year in Europe, the PS3 will see significant increases over there as well.

As far as Japan goes in 2009, the PS3 Final Fantasy Advent Children bundles in March says "Hi". I believe the edge will go to the PS3 in 2009 in Japan because Final Fantasy XIII for sure will come out this year, and Versus XIII may come out in 2009 as well, and SquareEnix will release The Last Remnant on the PS3 too.

The Xbox 360 will continue to sell well in the U.S. no doubt, but with a PS3 price cut and key titles that I listed above, the Xbox 360 will face some roadblocks.

To say that nothing is coming to the 360 this year is complete ignorance. Granted the exclusives are looking a bit anemic, but if you happen to like games there is a plethora of gaming goodness coming for all platforms in the guise of multi-platform titles. Many of these mulitplats are former exclusives, so the quality should be high.

Both systems released a helluva lot of extremely fun games. I didn't really play many Wii games last year, so I won't get into it. Everybody wants it to be a battle between PS3 and 360, so that's what it is, I guess, and the Wii can just be off on its own, yeah?

Both systems have an incredible line-up of games, both multiplatform and exclusive. Both platforms have got a lot in the pipeline. Both Microsoft and Sony own exclusive intellectual properties that are important to the gaming industry.

All I care about is that ... well, frankly I'm sick to death of the PS3 hate. Am I sick of the 360 hate, too? Not quite as much, because the PS3 doesn't have any flaws besides the price. There, I said it. It's got all the features you could ask for, free online, and proven reliability. The 360 is a bit lacking in features (no wi-fi, no high-capacity optical drive [blu-ray]), you've go to pay to play online, and it isn't hasn't proven itself as a reliable machine. So one is cheaper, and the other is better. That's the most objective way I can put it when you take the systems as SYSTEMS and ignore the question of which has what games.

OK. So, the 360 is doing better at retail. The PS3 isn't doing as well at retail. There's just so much media attention focused on praising what the 360's doing and attacking the level of success (or perceived lack thereof) that the PS3's had. I'm sick of it, because the PS3 is a quality machine with quality titles, and I'd like to see it get its due from the media and from gamers alike. It seems like so many people would be happy to see the PS3 die, but it doesn't deserve that fate. Some people talk trash about the 360, and I say some of it is well-deserved, because you're talking about real issues with the system. But when you talk trash about the PS3, what's in your arsenal? The system isn't selling as well as the 360. That's your entire arsenal of arguments. Period.

So, why is everyone focusing so much on that negative aspect? Shouldn't we be encouraging people to recognize the value in the machine and its line-up, so that we have more competition in this industry? What good does it do ANYONE to constantly harp on the poorer sales of one machine versus another?

You sing the praises of one machine because it sells better, which means you rationalize its faults out of existence, and then you bring up the poorer selling competitor and talk about how it just doesn't have the juice, and what you're really doing is stifling competition. Consumers don't have confidence in a product with all this negativity written around it. The 360 constantly gets good publicity and rarely negative, because the press focuses on its success in sales and then says "Year of the 360" or whatever. They talk about the failures of the PS3 at sales and then subsequently ignore the fact that it's a great machine worth a good value.

I say stop with the sales argument, and just talk about games, features, reliability... It's not doing anybody any good by giving the 360 so much praise and ignoring its faults because it's the one that sells better, and then downplaying the PS3 and ignoring its positives because it sells worse. This entire article is bad for the industry, because it comes of as an endorsement of one specific console, but that endorsement is coming on the most ludicrous of grounds: its reputation as a better-selling system, while rationalizing and brushing off any flaws it might have, or ignoring any features of the competition that are better.

I hope I've made my point clear, and apologies if I've failed to deliver my message properly. I'm sick of seeing praises heaped on the one that's already more successful, and attacks on the one that isn't, PURELY ON THE GROUNDS THAT ONE IS MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THE OTHER. It's stupidity, and it pushes the status quo. Don't we want a fair shot of it from all competing parties? Only good things can come for all of us when all the companies in our industry are competitive.

PS3 has a solid line up this year that excited, Infamous being one of them and God of War 3 is another. Do you really believe that with the number of first and second party developers that Microsoft has, that they can compete with the number Sony has? (if so you are a very silly person)

Microsoft has already stated that they are going to make a big push towards the casual market.(and that means less hardcore games coming from Microsofts first party studios)

The only reason Microsoft beat Sony in 2006 & 2007 in the games category was because the PS3 had just launched. (if you dont beleive me just look at the launch of the 360 in 2005 and tell me if they could have competed with the 2007 or 2008 lineup of the PS3)

Microsoft simply does not have the talent or the game developers to match what Sony can produce when it comes to variety of games and the quality of their game titles.

Microsoft will no doubt produce some good exclusive games in 2009 and beyond for the 360, but dont believe for one second that they can compete with Sony game titles in the future. MS just dosent have enough ammo against Sonys gaming studios. (buying DLC for 3rd party games is not the answer Microsoft needs)

The fact that Xbox Live has size limitations, and the PSN does not is a big advantage for Sony when it comes to Downloadable game titles.

Dont forget, now that more and more 3rd party developers are getting more familiar with the PS3, we can expect to see equal or better multiplatform games on the PS3. (we have already started to see this in 2008)

We finally got it to his house an watched him play an then I took a turn an it was alright. As for FFXIII and Tekken 6 going multiplatform it will definitely not harm the ps3 this year. Final Fantasy will only be released in Japan this year and it is ps3 exclusive in Japan so that will boost ps3 sales a lot. As for tekken 6 it might have an impact on the ps3 but most likely it wouldn't be too bad. For a fan of the 360 I really can't believe you didn't name any other exclusives besides halo.
