Helldivers 2's Success Shows Why Sony Should Prioritize Smaller Games Over AAA Titles

Is the wait between big AAA releases getting too long? Releasing smaller mid-budget titles may be the key to keep fans happy.

No. A variety is always best

Sony's going back to what made the PS2 and PS3 so great. Variety of games and releases. I'm glad they're going back to that.

Becuzisaid115d ago

Are they? As far as I'm house games being developed things are pretty sparse right now.

VersusDMC115d ago

Why would in house games be the only ones that matter? Stellar blade, rise of the ronin and helldivers 2 are published by playstation. FF7Rebirth and Granblue Fantasy relink are console exclusives.

So 5 exclusives so far in 2024.

Id say ps1 ps2, tbh the variety lacked on ps3. Well I mean if we're talking first party yeas Sony was good with it but not alot of developers took chances.

You can’t go off one of one success and say that’s the way! That’s why we have a gaas problem. It’s stupid.

TwoPicklesGood115d ago

No, just no. It’s one game and it got lucky. Smaller titles have a place but not more so than big AAA games.

TOTSUKO115d ago

Making a fun enjoyable game and keeping its community engaged is lucky? There’s probably some half truths to that. You can say that to a majority of Sonys AAA titles get lucky. How many of us bought a Sony exclusive just because it’s a Sony exclusive on top of million dollars of heavy marketing that goes with AAA.

Huey_My_D_Long115d ago

I buy them for the quality not the fact that's its Sony exclusive. Not every exclusive is a banger but most are quite good to great with a couple of duds

StormSnooper115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

Agree with everything you said except the “lucky” part. They made a game that was going to be great as long as they could retain what made the original fun. They did it. I actually called it.

5 or 6 major block busters a year with some smaller games mixed in.

Helldivers 2’s biggest update yet, Escalation of Freedom, drops August 6

Arrowhead Game Studios writes: "Our community continues to show us how strong we all are when united against the mindless Automatons and the scourge of the Terminid. As we stand here, on the eve of the Escalation of Freedom, we reflect on the 6 months since launch. We could never have predicted how far this game would go and how many Citizens would answer Super Earth’s call to arms!"
