New character reveals for Smash Bros. are always a big deal, and Nintendo tries to keep as much secrecy around each announcement as it possibly can.
VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Last week Nintendo held this year's surprisingly packed not-E3 Direct; with a full schedule for this year and a vague promise of a console successor next year, it's very possible that we've now seen our final Nintendo Switch Direct, or at least one with major first party reveals. Super Smash Bros Ultimate will host a new Spirits event on March 21 to celebrate the release of Princess Peach Showtime! and Super Mario Bros Wonder. The event will last for five days with new Spirits from the Nintendo Switch games.

Isn't every Smash Bros character a big secret? Kinda surprising no one in Square-Enix knew though, someone would have to sign off on what was okay/not okay to do with their IP, I also would have thought someone would have input on his moveset or design.
