Tomb Raider devs offer a peek at their new ‘unified’ Lara Croft

Polygon: "Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics launched a new website for the franchise on Wednesday — Valentine’s Day is also Lara Croft’s birthday — with another peek at the impending “unified” design for its action heroine. New artwork of Lara sporting a post-Survivor trilogy look that evokes her classic design supports the theory that the Lara we saw last fall in Call of Duty is basically the character’s future appearance."

Christopher476d ago

Ah, back to jungle romping in a camisole and short shorts.

CobraKai475d ago

Love it. This look is iconic. Her reboot look was so generic.

VenomUK475d ago

What you talking about? This is the reboot Lara but in the original costume.

CobraKai475d ago

Yeah. And? The original costume is the important part buddy.

Vengeance1138476d ago

Crystal Dynamics really going hard with the man face. They sure do hate feminine looks!

Christopher476d ago

Please tell me this is satire.

Vengeance1138476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

If you honest to God think that face is feminine, says alot about you pal. Go outside and see what actual women look like. Go google Unified Lara Croft Man Face and you'll see you're in the minority thinking this looks good. This is highly masculine.

Christopher476d ago (Edited 476d ago )

***Go outside and see what actual women look like.***

Do you honestly believe I'm some freak hidden away from the world and don't have a mother, never dated, my wife isn't a woman, my daughter isn't a woman, and I work exclusively with men, some who choose to wear dresses sometimes?

***you're in the minority thinking this looks good. This is highly masculine. ***

Right. I'm in the minority. It must be me. Not online people making statements like yours.

isarai476d ago

Take your own advice Vengeance, good lord 🤦

Vengeance1138476d ago

"men, some who choose to wear dresses sometimes? "

lmao, do you work at the circus? Definitely somewhere where clowns are present.

frostypants475d ago

@Vengeance maybe take your own advice and stop staring at anime all day. This doesn't look masculine at all.

A quick Google as to why this comment was made... Oh a twitch streamer Melonie Mac went right wing so all the brain broken little kids are following her crazy man face rants.

tracedinblood475d ago

I used to follow her, but she started getting real weird when she consumed more and more meat and talked about it on a constant basis. Her eyes bulge out of her head now and she makes the most unhinged arguments while claiming to be holy.

Meat is fine, but don't forget your veggies.

banger88476d ago

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this looks like a dude in drag.

Vengeance1138476d ago

Right! Glad to see atleast 1 sane person in here.

FunAndGun476d ago

Don't be ashamed you're attracted to her.

Barlos475d ago

Yeah, it kind of does tbh

Mr_cheese476d ago

Women come in all shapes and sizes pal, femine doesn't mean being put on a pedestal in looks.

Grow up lad.

SimpleSlave476d ago

You really going hard with the man face. You sure do hate feminine looks! Cuz if you honest to god think that face is masculine, says a lot about you pal.

Go outside and see what actual women look like...

Fixed it for you, bud.

On a serious note, you do need some help. Unplug, actually go outside, and soak up the sun. You'll be surprised of how much of a none entity you have turned into. Neither a man nor a woman, but a 4chan slime.

Seriously, seek help.

H9476d ago

Don't worry everyone agrees with you but they don't dare say it

thesoftware730475d ago

I think she has many masculine features, but wouldn't it make sense for what she does in game?

This is not PS1, it's a detailed model of a very built woman, who has a tough as nail edge...so yes, she has masculine features and she looks cool to me, I think the 3 Remakes were excellent, and can't wait for the next one.

Why are people looking for attraction in video game characters anyway?

H9475d ago

@thesoftware730 honestly I can say the same thing to you guys?, Why do you look for realism in fiction, I can't understand that at all, people like seeing something that looks good, we all like Ryu looking like Arnold times 2 because it's cool, not because it's realistic or anything, same thing for women

RaiderNation475d ago

@Christopher he only knows what women look like from OnlyFans and Pornhub.

DrDoomer475d ago

She does kinda look like the very rational Finnish alcoholic IT cross-dresser.

isarai475d ago

Sounds like you know that category quite well.

xHeavYx475d ago

@Vengance I wonder what you look like. It would be so ironic if you were this chubby guy with an overly round face.

ZeekQuattro475d ago

I'm getting strong neckbeard vibes from him just looking at those comments. If you think average or plain Jane women look like men something is mentally wrong with you.

outsider1624475d ago (Edited 475d ago )

"Go google Unified Lara Croft Man Face"

Lmao!!! Who..i mean seriously who..in their right mind would actually go the trouble to even type "Man" after Lara Croft. Jeeze..some you people need help really.

YourMommySpoils475d ago

I slightly see what you mean, but it's just concept art, so that will probably be improved.

isarai475d ago

Why would she wear an obscene amount of makeup to go out and plunder ruins? This proves even more you guys need to go touch grass and see the real world instead of E-girls

SyntheticForm475d ago

@isarai

I like your selective realism.

You could also ask why a woman would go and plunder tombs and ruins alone if you're going to go that route.

"This proves even more"

You have no better argument than I do; it's preference vs preference. I've been married for 16 years and my wife agrees - thinks Lara's face is cold and masculine.

thorstein475d ago (Edited 475d ago )

Why would she put botox in her lips that make her look like a circus clown? That look is hideous.

Women don't look like that except in AI. No wonder you're single.

SyntheticForm475d ago (Edited 475d ago )

@thorstein

Lol. Slow down and take a breather, then keep reading.

SyntheticForm475d ago

Lara always looked feminine. She looks decidedly masculine here.

With all due respect (which is none at all) vengeance ur so off on this lol.

thesoftware730475d ago (Edited 475d ago )

@Vengeance

My man, she raids tombs, she scales building, mountainsides, trees, and anything else she can, she shoots guns,, fight hordes of men/women, animals, and dinosaurs, walks, runs, swims, and, swings on vines/ropes.. What do you want her to look like? Barbie?

So, I agree with you about her masculinity, but have no problem with it, for all the reasons above. Additionally, if you played the remakes(I highly enjoyed all 3)..you would see her actual physical appearance change from game to game, gaining muscle and more masculine features, the dev even had an interview talking about her change..this Laura that you see in this new artwork was always the end game.

Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and then Shadow, all the same Laura as she gets more experienced, to finally become the iconic version, with the 2 guns and short shorts.

-Foxtrot476d ago

Great artwork but please…this unified timeline shit sounds awful

It won’t work

Classic Lara and Survivor Lara have completely different origin stories meaning they are two separate timelines you can’t unify together

I really don’t want Survivor Lara anywhere near Classic Lara.

thesoftware730475d ago

Survivor Laura in the remakes was a better character imo lol.

But, they can infact retcon, and unify everything. Take note of the remakes, they were always leaning into Laura becoming the, 2 guns, short shorts wearing version, just a more fleshed out, better written and more believable version of the old one.

-Foxtrot475d ago

How? She just whined and whined

Then you think after her progress near the end of the first reboot game the sequel would continue that but she goes back to her old self

The same then happens in the third game but now she’s arrogant and a bit of an arsehole at times especially to Jonah.

First game - Become the Tomb Raider

Second game - Become the Tomb Raider

Third game - Become the Tomb Raider

They are completely different timelines they can’t be merged, even the origin stories are totally different

It’s just a bad idea

Make a new universe or continue the original one

isarai476d ago

As long as she had dual guns, and doesn't whine all the damn time. They really dropped the ball with the new lara, had such a good start and didn't know what to do with it.

Christopher476d ago

She wines a lot less in the 2nd and 3rd game (she's pretty solid on her goals in the 3rd), but, yeah, lots of whining in that first one. It's not that she whined, it's when she whined at times. At some point, you have to recognize you're not in Kansas anymore, but she still had some moments pretty late in the 1st game.

thesoftware730475d ago

She was new to Tomb Raiding in the first remake...she progressively became more confident, muscular and experienced in each game.

So the "whining" sort of made sense...even though I would call it inexperienced.

OtterX476d ago

Yea, I actually really loved the moment in 2013 Tomb Raider where Lara truly transforms into the badass, blows the fort doors down shouting "That's right, run you bastards! I'm coming for you all!"
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I thought hey, there we go! She's become the Tomb Raider!

......bbbuuuuut then she reverts back to the whiney-ness immediately at the start of Rise of the Tomb Raider all over again. I never made it far enough for her to return to that confident Lara again, but the character evolution was just terrible IMO. Inconsistent.

Lexreborn2476d ago

Whining wasn’t my issue with Laura in new games. The issue I had was the extreme homicidal aspects of her, she went from “surviving” treacherous scenarios in the 1st one to just straight up going to action murdering trinity.

Even to the point of flooding an entire town to “stop” trinity. She murdered a crap ton of innocent people.

And she also wouldn’t listen to reason from anybody else for the sake of her goals. I could never fully attach to her and it’s why the 3rd game is still unfinished for me.

I also remember when they were supposedly designing gameplay that gave you options for stealth but 0 scenarios in the game truly allowed you to progress without killing a wave of enemies. So that was just flat false advertising for me.

outsider1624475d ago

Yeah she whines alot. You'd think by a third game..her whining would lessen but nope. Only reason i put it up with that..is because its a reboot and you know..before her roots.

No excuse now...

Not only CDPR but Epic Games as well i still haven't seen any game with that fidelty of that Ps5 tech demo .. that was 2020

VenomUK1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

Digital Foundry in its reaction video said they believe the demo reflects real performance, as overstating it’s competence on PS5 could bring significant risks to Epic Games’ shareholders and legal risks.

https://youtu.be/5PIyPpB83V...

Eonjay23h ago

Actually Horizon Forbidden West exceeds this in image quality. So it seems very plausible. Intergalactic is actually beyond this presntation in IQ, RT and resolution and thats locked 60FPS as well. As far as the usage of hardware RT in UE, they were able to reduce the CPU overhead.

This was a tech demo for UE 5.6. That was clearly stated and is evident by the presentation itself where several of the new features of UE are highlighted

This article title is inaccurate because this was not a demo for Witcher 4. It was a technical demonstration of Unreal Engine 5.6.

Christopher1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

***Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay features that were showcased in initial footage but never made it into the final game***

They literally made a big deal of telling everyone that they changed the gameplay of CP2077 during development and then did a new demo of the game with the new gameplay. There was no hiding this to the public. CP2077's problem with the buggy as heck and obviously too early release.

This is really bad journalism to promote this line of thinking. It's an attempt to rewrite history. You can definitely say you preferred the initial demo, but they were very open and clear when they moved from third-person to first-person that it would include major changes in gameplay and showed those off multiple times a year prior to the game's release.

---

As to the point of this article? Yeah, the whole event is a marketing event. I don't trust anything until it's released, tbh. No matter who is making it. I can still be excited by what I see, but it's not going to get me to pre-order a game or get me to go out there and sell what I saw as if it will be just like that in the full release.

neutralgamer19921d 16h ago

What about the fact CDPR showed gameplay behind closed doors which wasn't real? They dusnt allow anyone to bring their phones or any tech so once media came out of that gameplay reveal CP2077 was hyped to the moon and back. CDPR didn't show console gameplay so let's not act like they were transparent when they switched from 3rd to 1st person when they lied at launch of the game

Christopher1d 16h ago

You mean rumors? You want me to comment on rumors from Bloomberg? We arguing the belief of rumors now and not news?

Here's that fake demo - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

If you've played the game, you know how much that lines up with the final product. That's what I know.

***let's not act like they were transparent when they switched from 3rd to 1st person when they lied at launch of the game***

They literally re-demoed the game with the change, so they were transparent. You're just acting like they weren't when in 2018 they literally demoed the new gameplay. That's 2 years prior to release.

I don't know what they 'lied at launch of the game' is supposed to mean.

-

This game had enough wrong with it at release that we don't need to be arguing rumors and online hatred of the gameplay changes shown in 2018.

neutralgamer19921d 16h ago

Christopher, just to clarify — I'm not trying to be overly negative or dismissive. I fully acknowledge that CD Projekt Red was transparent when they switched from third-person to first-person and even re-demoed the game to reflect that. Credit where it’s due — they did show that change publicly.

But the real issue for me is how the game launched. Despite that transparency earlier on, they deliberately withheld gameplay from the console versions and still charged full price for something that was nowhere near ready. That’s where trust was broken. The game was released in a clearly unfinished and broken state, and it took years to get it into a playable condition. That goes beyond mistakes — that’s a serious failure in leadership and consumer respect.

So when I see something like the Witcher 4 tech demo — and yes, I understand it’s Epic showcasing Unreal Engine 5 — I can’t help but approach it with caution. It’s not blind skepticism, but earned skepticism. A lot of the original developers have left CDPR, so we can’t assume this next game will automatically reach Witcher 3 levels of excellence.

I want it to be amazing. We all do. But I’m not going to fully believe the hype until independent gamers and trusted content creators — people with a reputation for honesty and not being paid off — get their hands on it and say, “Yes, this is great.” Until then, it’s just marketing.

They built up enormous goodwill after The Witcher 3 and the free DLCs — but they lost much of that with Cyberpunk's release. Even platform holders like PlayStation and Xbox, who once trusted CDPR to self-certify, don’t anymore. That alone speaks volumes.

Again, it’s not hate — it’s caution born from experience

CrimsonIdol1d 15h ago

"Despite that transparency earlier on, they deliberately withheld gameplay from the console versions"
It was a multiplatform release, and yes they botched it, but clearly consoles weren't lead development platform, PC was. They clearly were hoping that they could get everything together by launch, and this was a mistake. I think them showing this running on a PS5 is a clear indicator that they've learnt from this.

But there are plenty of reasons not to get too excited about this, and it's not hidden behind any lies, it's right there watermarked on the footage. this is a technical presentation of the Unreal 5 engine, running on the PS5 at 60fps. This is technology that may be in the Witcher, this is not the Witcher.

Lightning771d 21h ago

Because it is marketing. Epic did the flying sand girl in 2020 now this with Witcher. I still wanna see what games shows the original showing of Unreal 5? It's been 5 years exactly.

Michiel19891d 17h ago

ofc it is, no real gameplay suddenly xrays a horse to show how its muscles are moving realistically.

CrimsonIdol1d 14h ago

It literally had text telling you it wasn't gameplay.

Extermin8or3_21h ago

They were literally showing off the fact it seamlessly can transition from gameplay to ctsceme those aspects of presentation were clear cutscenes....
