PEGI 18's Voice Actor Got €200 For His Iconic Work, Shares Thoughts On AI

Richard Wells, the voice behind video gaming's iconic PEGI 18 rating, revealed his compensation for the task & views on AI.

Seth_hun442d ago

He should have entered into a royalty agreement instead of a done deal

stupidusername442d ago

That was most likely never an option. As with everything else it was likely 'take the 200 or we’ll find someone else who will'.

gold_drake441d ago

i mean its the same with the Siri voice right, she never got any more than she got.

dumahim442d ago

An age rating has a voice actor?

exputers442d ago

As in, the person who literally says "PEGI 18" at the start of games/trailers.

dumahim442d ago

Do they have different actors based on the rating?

mastershredder442d ago

You gotta be kidding me. Here we go with the VO actor worship again.

He said "Pegi 18". What do you expect for all that hard work? 1mil? Royalties? Wow. Problem is this: Dreamy stary-eyed gamers with aspirations to do "something" one day and dream about being something they don't know much about i.e. entertainment / VO etc. and have some really f-ed up and bizzare expectation that they should get Kardashian level pay outs, or retire as of they had won the lottery. Doing barely anything = HUGE bucks. Yes, this would be a dream job for someone who has sat on their ass their whole and this was the first paying gig, but that is fantasy and NOT how it works.

Making it big does not mean you make big bucks. You take a lot of jobs, are in demand, and you do very well. ^Again there is a really f-ed up VO fetish / fascination that's seems to have gone lamestream. No one give's a F about the voice actors's opinion is. No one cares what their salary woes are There are places for that and the first place is their f-ing agent. Gamers, stop defending outsourced contractors particularly decades after the fact.

An update on EA SPORTS™ WRC.

Dear Rally Community,

Every great journey eventually finds its finish line, and today, we announce that we've reached the end of the road working on WRC.

Knushwood Butt1d 7h ago

'It marked the first time the studio had used the license in 18 years since 2022’s Colin McRae Rally 3.'

Can you not get AI to do proofreading?

TheColbertinator1d 6h ago

Weird article written by a bot.

In any case I knew EA would ruin Codemasters.

Codemasters will likely close soon😞

Honestly would be nice, but this game is such a complete product. I have been spending hours just cleaning up the mini bosses. I found such an over power build and when I got to Frozen Heart it was just EASY party the three dancers to 300k exp over and over.

I haven’t even gone to the Axons yet and I am pretty sure the rest of the game is going to be a cake walk. I beat sprong just a bit ago and MAN did I over kill. And NOW I got the cheater Picto? It’s over the enemy never getting a turn lol

Turn-Based Isn't Dead, It's Hiding In Plain Sight

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has proven that there is an audience for turn based game play, but what else has been doing that all along?

Yea but what we need back is that classic square turn based combat and for AAA not to be afraid to go back to it. It is also just so frowned upon. Yet look at clair obscur, persona, and plenty of games that are beloved.

Lexreborn21d 15h ago

All I hear is there’s no loss in this style of game and we still have very quality options. Square did 14 turn based entries, not including the side games like world of final fantasy and other classic games that are turn based.

Square wants to evolve their engine and expand their styles. We really need to let them work it out, I don’t mind photo realistic action rpgs and anime ones like tales of franchise. Let’s just take it in strides and measure the content on what is delivered maybe?

gold_drake2d ago

i mean, ever since Final Fantasy move away from it, u really only had Atlus and Dragon quest 12.

its a shame that asquare feels the need to move away from it.

but im glad that exp33 brought it back, wkth alot of success.

like can u imagine ff16 or ff7 remake to be like that? daaaym.

Michiel19892d ago

what?

Sea of Stars, Eiyuden Chronicles, Triangle Strategy, Octopath, Bravely Default. DoS, Yakuza, xcom, marvel xcom and many, many (indie) games are turnbased. Most games i play nowadays are turnbased and I never ran out of good games to play.

RedDevils1d 3h ago

Don't forget Falcom's games all are turn base.

andy852d ago

There's absolutely loads of franchises till have turn based

RaidenBlack2d ago

Need Wasteland 4 or a modern old-skool-esque isometric Fallout

Michiel19892d ago

Wasteland 3 is the only one I played of them and while I enjoyed it a lot, I had to wait a couple months to play because the loading times and bugs were unmanagable, really hope if they release a sequel they give it a bit more polish for launch, cause the game itself was hella fun.

raWfodog2d ago

I've always loved both turn-based and action rpgs. For me, it's the overall combat flow and mechanics that interest me more than whether I'm moving around or standing still.

VersusDMC2d ago

I played 300+ hours of P3Reload, SMTVengence and Metaphor last year. And Metaphor was a GOTY contender last year. As was infinite wealth.

So i don't know where this Turn based games are dead narrative is coming from...
