Most people whom do this are enthusiasts, they gave the skills to do so and so they do for the heck of it.

Because they got the skills that they can utilize? at the end of the day, these modders are individual developers and Investing their time into these hobby activities ultimately hones their programming/tech skills.
So, to get sued or not, they are gaining tech knowledge/experience at the end.
