Limited Run Says It Will Continue To Support Physical Xbox Releases 'Whenever Possible'

As part of the mass Xbox layoffs this week, news has also emerged about the company's physical games being impacted, with Microsoft reportedly shutting down key departments.

While there's no evidence just yet Microsoft is necessarily withdrawing completely from this space, it has raised questions about the future of physical support within this ecosystem - with speculation Xbox could outsource and might be consolidating.

Now, in response to this development, the CEO of physical distributor Limited Run Games, Josh Fairhurst, has chimed in on social media. mentioning how his company would "continue to support Xbox" hard copy releases "whenever possible":

Why isn't MS PR getting in front of this messaging and making an official statement? All of this speculation is based on that Windows Central guy's tweet that he's since backed off of a bit.

shinoff2183514d ago

How do you pr what your actually going to do. Can't comment if it's your actual plan.

crazyCoconuts514d ago

Spin it. It's what PR does. If it's true, you soften the blow... XSX will continue to support physical media, will be reduced but not eliminated, better for the environment, this is what our gamers are asking for, dunno, MS PR has been super active spinning/lying and getting out ahead of things before. Maybe they were caught off guard by Jez's tweet but they shouldn't have been...

jwillj2k4513d ago

U can, just tell us this is allowing gamers to access more games since physical sales arent available in every country. People are so stupid and blind they’ll run with that.

Zeref513d ago

But we know they are not lol.

The same person that started that rumor confirmed that it's not happening any time soon.

crazyCoconuts513d ago

@zeref - confirmed it's not happening soon?
He just clarified that he doesn't know what is actually happening in the broader sense so people shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Plague-Doctor27514d ago

Jez is MS PR. His statement is already wishy washy enough to soften the blow when Avowed/Indiana Jones are digital only

crazyCoconuts513d ago

Yeah maybe he was driven by anger at first and then realized that his career is riding on MS support. Or maybe he realized he's working with partial/incomplete information and lots of gaming sites are running with it like it's a forgone conclusion and it's gonna look bad when MS announces Monday that these rumors were BS... I really don't know

Zeref513d ago

If Xbox goes all digital. It 100 percent is not happening this generation.

Profchaos514d ago

They did remember adorably all digital Phil got out in front of it saying well yes we said that but the plans changed guys nothing's to worry about.

All of this was exposed months ago in the FTC documents they backtracked and are now setting the wheels in motions let's see if they come through with a new cheaper series x that's "adorably all digital"

crazyCoconuts513d ago

Exactly, remember that visual had the customer feedback about Loving everything being digital you can play the same game anywhere and MS is so environmentally sustainable or whatever. If this is really happening, I'm surprised we haven't been fed that PR yet.

Zeref513d ago

Yeah this is getting out of hand. These websites never follow up on the stuff that they post. They'll run with the initial headlines and then never fix them when it's corrected.

I assume there will be the Activision Blizzard roundtable soon and they'll address things then.

neutralgamer1992513d ago

please do tell how what Phil is doing is different from what don matrick originally announced at xbox one reveal? and that whole phil is saving xbox brand is nonsense too

this will be such an easy win for playstation and this means that MS will be going 3rd party with its gaming division soon after. They want to sell content and for that they don't need xbox

Yeah going digital only Microsoft this is bad for gamers and limits gamers, Physical > Digital.

Zeref513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

PC gaming has been all digital for ages and it's one of the biggest platforms, only behind mobile.

But Xbox going digital only is "bad for gamers" lol stop it.

Also it's not happening any time soon.

XiNatsuDragnel513d ago

True man that doesn't mean pc is exactly a console 1:1 and I say this if one goes for all digital one follows it's a deadly trend big brother.

gold_drake513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

thats because a PC is never the same. not everyone has a disc drive or a blu ray drive. also, pcs are not JUST for games.

being digital is a logical step for the pc realm.

consoles are primarily built with discs in mind. with all-digital options.

THATS the difference.

Plague-Doctor27513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

There are some important differences between PC and consoles.

There are no "generations" on PC. So stuff released 10-15 years ago is still playable. Theres no guarantee anything you buy digitally today on console will be downloadable/playable in 10-15 years, but I think this is unlikely.

On PC you have 3rd party options for storefronts. If a console maker goes all digital they have a total monopoly and control over pricing, dont even have to worry about physical titles being cheaper (which they usually are)

On PC you can often set up private servers for games that have lost support, or even private servers for "old" versions of games.

There is very little risk your digital purchase on PC becomes useless. And even options such as piracy are possible in a worst case scenario. Maybe you should try to play Fable 3 on PC in preparation for the upcoming Fable game. Try to think of a workaround that would work for a console in that situation

Profchaos513d ago

PC is different in many ways once something is on steam they typically won't pull it whereas I can no longer buy many 360 games because it's shuttered.

The PC is also a open platform meaning games contents and fikes can be extracted and preserved. a console is a black box a company dictates how it runs and for how long it runs at least modern consoles anything pre 7th gen runs fine offline

shinoff2183512d ago

Zeref

Well that's fking great for oc gaming. Congrats pc gaming for being all digital. Console gaming is a bit different. Physical on console is still wanted and severely underestimated.

How many who bought baldurs gate 3 would've bought it physical instead but digital was the only option? Alan wake 2? How many indie games out there don't have a physical release?

Of course digital sales are going to be higher. It only makes logical sense. Physical sales are still good especially when you take those things into account. Let's also not forget how many of those charts lump mobile gaming into I also.

I think I seen a thing for Playstation. That digital/physical was 60/40. That's pretty fking great imo cause when you look at how many games on ps aren't physically available its pretty neck and neck. Say what you want but the digital only bs is exactly that pure bs

Zeref513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

Nothing will change if consoles go all digital.
The market for physical games is hanging by a thread.

Xbox players buy digital games the most. But it's not like Playstation is far behind.
Last I heard it's 80 percent for Xbox and 70 percent for Playstation.

There's a reason they both have all digital consoles.

It's going to happen eventually. Nothing is going to stop it.

We just need to make sure that when it happens that we ensure it's a good experience for us.

We should still be able to store our games on external storage and they need to bring digital trading and selling ASAP.

If the next Xbox launches with that. I'll have no issue going all digital.

XiNatsuDragnel513d ago

I get it you must like not owning something oh nevermind that subs so it's irrelevant. I think all digital future is bad for people who can't afford it. If ever companies does it. Then hey I can read books or *off topic * quests. Instead of this. Nintendo fans are buying physical like 80% and that barely changes too so I can use numbers but I want to say we need options so you can reach more customers. Physical > Digital

Plague-Doctor27513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

The US data that just came out for physical data in 2023 was:
>50% Switch
40% Playstation
<10% Xbox

The spread is probably higher in other countries due to cost/internet etc. I know in Australia for instance a physical game will often be 20-30AU$ cheaper than digital. Sony was still making a good chunk of change off physical based on the Insomniac leaks

The world isn't ready for all digital this decade

And btw they will NEVER bring digital trading/selling. A major point of going digital is destroying the 2nd hand market

The Wood513d ago

Cap. Anything Microsoft do is fair game for you. Some people still want the option to sell on borrow their games to whomever they want to. Taking away that option is highly anti consumer wherever it happens be it this gen or next. Forcing gamers to go all digital is scummy but xbox guys are at a ratio 10 percent physical 90 percent digital anyway so I could see why they'd do that for their own customers base.

Zeref513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

With services like GamePass and PS Plus, Gaming is more affordable than EVER. If you can't afford 10 dollars a month, you probably can't afford 70 dollar games either.

So the affordability argument is out the window.

And you don't own the games you have on the disc. Some games aren't even playable from disc without downloading stuff to your console anyway.

You don't own the game any more on disc than you own the game on any storage device.

If it's about game preservation just put the games you buy on an external storage device. It's literally the same thing.

The only issue is trading and selling.

@Gold_drake

.... That comment doesn't even deserve a counter argument.. That is just pure utter BS and you know it.

XiNatsuDragnel513d ago

You like lack of ownership don't you?, Nii San.

shinoff2183512d ago

Zeref

Tell that to people that bought wii u and 3ds digital games.

Truth is most disc games are completly playable from disc. For instance star ocean 2 remake. Completly playable without connecting to the internet. The day one patch was for some languages. Now you get some games that aren't complete but it's bs on the parts of ea, ubisoft, Activision and it's still not even all of their games that aren't complete. Truth is most are but keep going with you and ms mission.

raWfodog513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

I’m assuming if Xbox goes with an all-digital console release next-Gen (if they actually do release anything), that will be the official end of their backwards-compatibility for physical games.

XiNatsuDragnel513d ago

Ofc man Xbox wanted this since 2013.

What will keep retailers from pulling consoles? Wasn't this always the threat? I get that xbox isn't really about the console anymore, but it's too soon to drop it completely.

Profchaos514d ago

Who knows they might take it as a challenge like we will sell it directly to the consumer but you're right I'd retailers lose their software cut why bother many are seemingly giving up on Xbox software as is

crazyCoconuts513d ago

Maybe if it gets so low that retailers are shrinking displays on their own, MS would rather pull it all together, avoid the optics of looking like the brand that they just invested trillions in is clearly losing. Maybe execs feel instead of losing, change the game.

Zeref513d ago

It's not happening any time soon. Maybe nextgen and by then Playstation will probably be doing the same.

Hofstaderman513d ago

Why? PlayStation has a healthy mix of physical and digital sales.

mkis007513d ago

With the detachable and standalone disc readers, that doesn't seem to be Sony's current path.

shinoff2183512d ago

Ps shouldn't be lumped into xbox bs. Sony was the first one to allow small publisher to print runs as low as 1k. Why would Sony stop all of a sudden. Especially showing 40 perce t physical sales. Would be higher to if half to a little under half of games released with a disc to begin with.

Zeref513d ago

They didn't release an all digital console for no reason.

It's happening.

Hofstaderman513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

They still release a console with a disc drive and even a sell seperately disc drives for those who bought a digital console and want to buy physical discs later. The fact that their new digital sku can be upgraded with a disc drive was introduced after the previous digital sku which could not be paired with a drive actually tells you their commitment to physical games.

Stanjara513d ago

Idk why is this such a shock. Xbox owners didn't buy physical games. Retailers started to return the disks back to it's publishers. Than retailers stopped to order new ones. Than publishers decided to only release PS and Switch physical.

Than MS said: -You know what Phil? We need to fire some people.

All that noise just for a limited edition. Smh.

IRetrouk1h ago

They are good headsets though, if i didn't already own a 3s I would have picked this one up, it certainly looks nicer than the standard.

XBManiac2h ago

Have they tested Xbox app before launching this? It is unplayable on Meta Quest and this seems to be only a marketing movement to say "This is an Xbox". Lag is mortal with the Xbox official app on Meta Quest. It is far better and cheaper to use Steam VR, Meta Link or any other solution, but not Xbox app. Some will be disappointed after buying this for playing Xbox Game Pass streamed games... but... hey! This is a good XR set for connecting to a PC and playing Half-Life: Alyx and thousands of VR titles for PCVR... as well as native Meta Quest titles and apps. Maybe, this will convert more Xbox players to Meta Quest users.

PhillyDonJawn2h ago

Why would you stream a game while using a VR headset? Sounds like a bad combination

XBManiac1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It works flawlessly with a PC through WiFi 6/7 and it gives you freedom, playing PC VR games without wires. You can have full PC graphics and fps with "dumb" light VR set comfort. But... Meta Quest 3S (and any other compatible model) Xbox Game Pass Solution only works as a virtual screen with added lag and lower resolution. It is a bad resolved solution for something that works better without Xbox engraved on the packaging. The Xbox game pad is nice, BTW... but it does not add anything new.. .no haptics, no nothing.

RaiderNation1h ago

IT'S virtual reality glasses? Lmao! Dont you mean a Meta Quest 3s with a new paint scheme? Why are we pretending this is some new platform?

Deeeeznuuuts1h ago

Exactly, I've seen so many articles saying that Xbox are releasing a VR system. They're not, like you said, it's just a lick of paint 😅

DivineHand12530m ago

In the VR communities people are excited for this. If I didn't already have a meta quest 3 I would be considering this just for the look and the new controller.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?

Scissorman4d ago

it was not. it greatly expanded the areas and puzzles to the point where it felt like an entirely new game. the enemies and boss fights were given a MASSIVE upgrade. the abstract daddy fight in particular was incredible. and the team added two new endings.

You got downvotes by pathetic gamers for feeling hopeful about good games coming out next year. Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy? It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

NGL, next year might be one of the best years in gaming ... starting off with RE9 and GTA VI ...
and then all the good games that's been cooking
Pragmata, Sands of Time, Saros, Gears E-Day, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker,
Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra
current-gen only Infinity Ward's CoD, Duskbloods
+ My guess: Wolverine, Exodus, Mudang, Crimson Desert, Clockwork etc ...
~ seems like it might get too stacked

@rokos:”Hopefully “
I downvoted you not for been hopeful but because I have seen the same “NEXT YEAR WILL BE SPECIAL “ comment for the last 10+ and hasn’t seen anything special from Microsoft.

Gears of war reloaded

Clockwork revolution
Fable
Doom the dark ages

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer199212d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted12d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast12d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica12d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand12512d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer199212d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts12d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.
