Measuring your Google search's carbon footprint

Worried about the carbon footprint of your Google searches?

A Harvard University physicist says a typical search on a desktop computer generates about 7 grams of carbon dioxide, which is comparable to bringing a kettle to boil, according to a report Sunday in The Times of London. And while that doesn't sound like a lot, the report notes that Google handles about 200 million searches daily.

We need to start taxing google for its carbon dioxide emissions!!!!!

Interesting article. Although if you want to talk about greenhouse gases then you need to discuss water vapour. Water vapour is also a greenhouse gas and one that is proven though scientific fact. Clouds have been long proven to trap heat on the surface, and on top of that water vapour also absorbs heat. Nights here in Florida in the winter that are humid don't get very cold. The average low temperature gets down to maybe 60 degrees. The average temperature when the humidity is low can get as low as 25 degrees. The simple answer is that water vapour AKA humidity, is responsible. Clouds and water vapour are the real greenhouse gases despite the people that argue that CO2 is the culprit. C02 comprises maybe 0.5% of the air whereas water vapour makes about 20% of the air. Carbon Dioxide contributing to global warming is wrong. Both in numbers and in fact.

For God's sake people, wake up and realize that the entire "carbon problem" is a giant scam.

It's simply a way to tax and control you (and make you feel good about it at the same time).

Our governments have a sinister agenda, and this issue is part of it.

7 more grams of CO2 into our 5,148,000,000,000,000,000,000 grams of atmosphere.

(Yes, that's that the actual volume of our atmosphere.)

i allways thought it was 5,148,000,000,000,000,000,000 and 1

Sibs4189d ago

Sit Down, wouldn't that be 5,148,000,000,000,000,000,001?

By the way, I did 10 google searches just to spite this, there goes my coffee for the week...

I already have 16268 searches in google web history and can add another 7-8,000 easily which were not counted.I will take 23500 as a decent estimate. So that makes my CO2 emissions from google= 23,500*7=164500gms=164.5kg. hurts me. I am quite a green person and try to lower my carbon footprint. But better late than never. I will use search only when its absolutely necessary from now on.

I use google for everything now,
its just boring to type something in the URL, i just google search it all.

Its cold here where I live, I welcome global warming with open arms.

Maybe we should just unplug the internet and never use it again...

i hope you can provide 10 million + WOW players their fix, not to mention the internet porn...what will we do with no interent porn...

I care about the planet, I really do. I understand that if we draw too much lifestream from the planet, Sephiroth can summon meteor

But geez, I probably produce more emissions after a chili dinner than through Google
