The Outerhaven writes: In Spectator Mode Podcast episode 141,the crew sits down to discuss the current state of handheld PC gaming, how it has matured, what devices we recommend for someone just getting into PC gaming, and games we’re looking forward to in 2024.
Charlie writes: "Early reviews of the new ASUS ROG Ally X aren't as positive as we thought they might be, with some physically unable to recommend it."
I have the OG Ally and I’m happy with that. I haven’t looked into what this version can do over the OG. I think I’ll wait for the Ally 2 before upgrading.
See I love the idea of these handheld gaming devices. Pc games in the palm of your hand. Xbox in the palm of your hand. But like laptops when you compare them to similar priced desktops. The desktops just hold so much more value for money and can be upgraded. Just not portable.
I think the steam deck was priced well it's like having a PS4 portable. Especially second hand 64gb models.
How much does playing AAA games portably, and on the go mean to you? You have your answer there.
Even the steam deck channels I watch on YouTube the guys pretty much all like the Ally X with the biggest criticism being the price at $800. That’s a lotta extra dough to finally have a product that they felt held a leg up on the Deck with all things considered. The OG model beat the Deck in terms of pixel count and performance in some circumstances, but the overall experience was always same or worse that the Deck (OS, amount of tinkering needed, battery life, warranty/customer support, and cost all worse than Deck). I’d say wait for a sale if you don’t own any of them.
No Man's sky World's Part 1 update has seen huge success in the Steam Deck community, with the game now in the top 5 most played chart.
Fanatical has launched another bundle called Platformania which offers 16 Steam Deck-compatible games for a low price.
