Microsoft has a huge and unexpected Xbox opportunity with GTA 6 — here's why

Could the Xbox Series S become an unlikely GTA 6 hero?

darthv72531d ago (Edited 531d ago )

I could see this being the game that would make many SS users either upgrade to the SX. If they already have a 5, they will just play it there. I know when i got the S first, it was a great little system. It still is, but shows its limitations. I then upgraded to the X and now only use the S when i travel (I added a travel screen to it). No doubt the PS5 version will sell more, but I wouldnt be surprised if this caused an uptick in SX adoption as well.

ThePacemaker530d ago (Edited 530d ago )

No doubt, PS5 Pro will be the best place to play a huge game like GTA6.

Abear21529d ago

Yup, 30fps target this Gen, next Gen and on PC this game will be the truth we’ve all been waiting for. Hopefully first person mode is day one

Notellin529d ago

What in the made up fanboy nonsense is this post?

Profchaos529d ago

I was massively against a pro why do I need it nothing has pushed the bounds of what's possible in my view my ps5 hasn't struggled then this came along and much like rdr2 made me get a pro I'd get a pro for GTA vi

Mr_cheese531d ago

Might as well just buy a ps5 at that point, then you've got both consoles and access to all

roadkillers529d ago

I don't understand the writing "Series S be an unexpected GTA6 hero". GTA6 would sell 100+ million if it was released in 2020 as a launch only title. GTA6 is the hero for the consoles.

I don't see why anyone would want to go with Xbox. Microsoft made it clear that they are willing to abandon the Xbox console nd head towards the Gamepass app instead. They have even stated that in the past. Having an article talk about how Xbox is great because of backwords capability, hang tight. They are looking to release the app everywhere and abandon the console space.

Mr_cheese529d ago

It's windowcentral pushing propaganda

aconnellan530d ago

“Here’s why”

I’m going to not give this article a click out of spite. It’s a given that you’re going to explain why, or else the article wouldn’t exist, you don’t have to tack a “here’s why” on the end.

/rant

gold_drake529d ago

ugh i haye that too, like
"im a dickhead, heres why"

no gurl, u trash. we know. write better headlines ha.

Concertoine529d ago

Writing in general is really on decline. I see typos and poor grammar on the reg, even in major publications.

Mr_cheese529d ago

It's all about clicks and less about quality these days. Hit your quota no matter the substance.

Just ask videogamer 🤣

dumahim529d ago

Hasn't hit gaming site yet, but the newest headline annoyance I'm seeing is "I'm an expert. This is what you should do/buy." Literally calling themselves an expert in the headline. It's only a matter of time until the gaming sites do it.

Profchaos529d ago

It's getting worse as more people lean on AI to write these things they barely proofread them to. Gaming bible biggest culprit

Concertoine529d ago

@Profchaos

AI will def be an issue. I teach middle school English, and we dont assess spelling at all, havent for years. I think we’re seeing the fallout of that right now and AI’s ripple is coming up

ChasterMies529d ago

My family and I joke about these kinds of headlines because the articles under them are also a joke.

raWfodog530d ago

There’s at least a year and a half until GTA6 releases. Start saving up your money and get either a PS5 or XSX.

Magog530d ago

No one is waiting for the next GTA to suddenly buy an Xbox. I won't move the needle any more than Starfield did and that was an exclusive. People will buy it on Playstation because their friends will buy it on Playstation because their friends already have a Playstation as it's by far the more popular console.

IcedOmega13529d ago

if anything its gonna push me to buy a ps5. My pc might as well already be an xbox. PS5 still has exclusives

Profchaos529d ago (Edited 529d ago )

Accurate I call my PC the Xbox 2070 at times as I play pretty much anything worth playing on Xbox first party on that.

randomvoice529d ago

Also, why would someone who owns a PC get an Xbox? Like it is literally an inferior PC. Most folks will want to get a PS5 if they're blowing money since that means they can also play some Sony exclusives.

Profchaos529d ago (Edited 529d ago )

GTA vi will move the needle on current gen console sales absolutely sure if it. But you're right it'll be more likely to move it for Sony most people know it's coming and will be unlikely to want to experience it on a xss it'll likely be the weakest version unless there's a switch 2 version eventually.

But the game scaling to xss does actually bide well for switch 2 getting it purely speculative still

Take-Two CEO Says Rockstar Games Wants GTA VI To Be The Best Entertainment Product Ever Created

They are going to raise the price on this game.

Profchaos1d 13h ago

Who cares I mean honestly honestly the amount of hours you can sink into this game alone would be worth the price of two games

ZycoFox1d 10h ago

Provided they have plenty of missions to the story and lots of interactivity/side stuff, or add more afterwards.. Not much good if the game is very short or a big desert, or both.

-Foxtrot1d 10h ago

Who cares? All of us who don't want other developers to get the same idea which they will

Nintendo already opened the flood games with their pricing now you want it to get worse? You are letting developers have the excuse.

Complete boot licking...we didn't ask Rockstar to make these games super ambitious and spend millions on it.

Also you know most of that money is just going to be raked back in thanks to the Online so why do they need to raise the price?

Profchaos1d 6h ago

@foxtrot I totally understand the perspective of other games don't deserve this and I entirely agree. If Nintendo didn't do it Xbox would have done it twice weeks later their decision wasn't a knee jerk reaction it was hinted at and planned well before the floodgates open they had been giving away their first party titles for a long time now to gamepass subs and failing to recoup development expenses it was inevitable that the price was going up.

If GTA Vi wasn't as ambitious as it is people would riot we say we didn't ask for this but we kind of did the expectation of perfection was set many years ago and the longer the development the more we expect.

Think of half life 3 if that ever actually comes out it has to be god tier it can't be a standard shooter it has to excell same with GTA.

CrimsonWing692d ago

Can’t wait! Like my hype has never been this high for a game. I hope it really delivers and looks like what they’re showing. Like, I’ll finally feel like we’ve entered next-gen if it does.

lucasnooker2d ago

Only game this generation I’m truly hyped for. A true AAA big budget banger pushing the hardware to the limits like the good old days!

Eonjay1d 18h ago

While is certainly good to.see the push the machines keep in mind the average studio doesn't have the money or resources to invest into development for over a decade. It really isn't feasible for every game or even 10% of them to reach the levels of this game.

lucasnooker1d 17h ago

@Eonjay and that’s why gaming is cooked today!

Eonjay1d 4h ago

I get it but having spent the weekend playing Balatro, I am actually very satisfied with games of different sizes and prices. I think all big companies should have games of all ranges. And technically they already do.

Basically there really isn't a good reason for most games to push hardware to the max.

Levii_922d ago

I can't wait for this overblown cutscene game to come out so i never buy it and spend money on it.

pwnmaster30002d ago

Thanks for sharing.
I guess I’ll do the opposite

Yui_Suzumiya2d ago

Hell yes! Someone speaking my language for once.

GotGame8181d 14h ago

Hell yes! Like I said, someone has multiple accounts!

b00mFargl31d 23h ago

That's a really cool story; I'm sure your mom loves it when you tell her those stories when you come out of the basement.

GotGame8181d 14h ago

Someone has multiple accounts!

Yui_Suzumiya23h ago

You know there is more than 1 person in the world who thinks GTA is boring right? Lol

andy851d 11h ago

Cutscene game? I probably had 100 hours gameplay in one playthrough of V. Not bad for a cutscene game

GhostScholar2d ago

Technically it looks incredible but I’m a bit disappointed that it’s turned into a franchise about heists. I miss the more carried mission structure. I miss having just one playable character too.

Putte2d ago

Exactly. It's a shame we don't have one playable character. And the boring heist all the time. Miss the more grounded story's about people.

Extermin8or3_1d 23h ago

You realise you can have both on the story right?

LarVanian1d 18h ago

Heists, be it bank heists or smaller scale, have always been present in GTA since GTA3 at least. That game literally kicked off the 3D universe with a bank heist (it was a cutscene albeit).
We still have no idea how the full story of GTAVI will pan out but it should really be expected that there will be the odd heist on top of other aspects of criminality.

GhostScholar1d ago

Yes but starting with gta v that was the thrust of the whole game. I just miss the mission variety of the games prior to V.

-Foxtrot1d 10h ago

"I miss having just one playable character too"

I have to agree, I felt like I couldn't really invest enough time in anyone during GTAV because we kept switching and out of all of them Trevor was the only fresh of breath air since Michael just reminded me of Tommy and Franklin reminded me of CJ. Also only allowing you to buy certain properties with certain characters was annoying.

I'm hoping with the two characters being romantically linked it means they share all their properties and investments in the game.

PhillyDonJawn2d ago

They're definitely gonna charge 2x. Full cost for the story. $80 Full cost for the MP. $80 complete $160 Bundle with some in game currency and Cosmetic dlc. $200

Ninver1d 14h ago

And I'll give them a nice middle finger and buy 2 other games.

fsfsxii1d 13h ago

I’ll buy two copied just to piss you people off.

PhillyDonJawn1d 5h ago

Why would I be pissed? Its gta id buy that sht @$300 lol. I just acknowledged the bs prices the game industry is pulling

Ninver22h ago

But why would anyone be pissed if you're dumb enough to fork over that amount of cash. It's your money lol.

Alex Hutchinson on Why Google Stadia Failed and What Cloud Gaming Needs to Succeed

Alex Hutchinson talks about Google Stadia, how Xbox compares, and what cloud gaming needs to move forward.

clouddosage.com
Goodguy013d ago

Cloud gaming still has too many flaws. Fast stable internet, extra costs/subscription services, not ideal for mobile data and why play over cloud via wifi when you have a console/pc that has no input delay and other issues, why buy a game on a cloud service (will always need online even if it's a single player game) when you can actually own it on console/pc...at the same price. Cloud gaming should only ever stay as an option to gaming and playing your games that you already own. Never as the only option.

Tacoboto2d ago

I disagree, in the sense that the flaws are and have been these same known quantities for some time. You know you need fast and stable internet for the best experience. You know it isn't just free beyond Remote Play. Ownership - you know what ecosystem you're in.

Cloud Gaming is awesome when it's there as the most viable option at the time and works. For me, it was like this morning on my laptop playing Pentiment waiting for my car service to finish. For others it's to quick demo a new game before thinking of hard drive space. Maybe Mac users with gigabit internet want to play GeForce Now and buy a game off Steam only to play it that way.

rayford151d 14h ago

Buddy said whole lot of nothing

isarai2d ago

As long as latency exists, cloud gaming will never thrive no matter how much they advertise that there's low latency or no latency that always ends up being a load of crap

Terry_B2d ago

I will never support cloud gaming.

darthv722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I quite enjoy cloud streaming now. I find it the quickest way to testing if a game is worth committing download time or even $ to buy it. And using dedicated devices like the portal and gcloud makes it all the better.

But like Goodguy says... it's an option, and not the only one. If people understand that, they may start to appreciate this convenience.

lex-10202d ago

I think Xbox is doing Cloud Streaming right, even if I think its only because they're doing hardware wrong.

By enabling xCloud on The Xbox One and Series S they enable players to buy the cheaper console but play games in better resolutions through xCould.

Take the recent Oblivion release for instance. If you play it locally on a Series S it's rendered at 630P and upscaled using FSR to 1260P with a 30FPS cap.

But if you play it on xCloud on the Series S, it's at 1080P native 60 FPS.

So you can get better performance using xCloud then playing local (on the Series S and Xbox One).

CrimsonWing692d ago

It shouldn’t have required a subscription service. Like do the Steam model and just take the % on software sales or have a sub tier where you pay monthly or annually and get perks.

I’m not opposed to the idea of being able to stream games in the highest quality, but Stadia was so poorly handled it turned into a massive sh*t show.

lex-10202d ago

"It shouldn’t have required a subscription service."

It didn't

"Like do the Steam model and just take the % on software sales or have a sub tier where you pay monthly or annually and get perks."

That's literally what it was. Stadia pro gave 2 free games a month (similar to PS+), 4K visuals, and 5.1 Surround Sound. But if you didn't want to pay you could simply buy the games and play them in 1080P. The core service was free.

But google massively screwed up the marketing which led to people thinking it needed a sub to use.

Eonjay1d 18h ago

Google Stadia failed largely in part because of the massive campaign Microsoft launch against it. It didn't have the massive support of PlayStation, Nintendo, or even Apple to withstand the negativity campaign Microsoft launch against it.

Why The Rumored $1 Billion Budget For Grand Theft Auto VI Does Not Add Up

Here's why the rumored $1 billion budget for Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game, Grand Theft Auto VI, doesn't quite add up.

twistedvoxel.com
thorstein3d ago

"Or was it i̶n̶f̶o̶r̶m̶e̶d̶ guesswork from analysts?"

Video game budgets will always be fictional, just like Hollywood movies. Unless there are receipts it's all speculation.

And Take Two has a marketing department with an already approved budget (just like studios in Hollywood).

thorstein3d ago

(Continue...I was in the Lincoln Tunnel)
Budgeting isn't included in the total cost because it is a separate budget. These companies intentionally inflate the numbers so they pay less in taxes.

This is not a new trend. And if you give your CEO $30 million per year and a game takes 5 years, you just add that $150million to the budget (CNN).

VenomUK2d ago

The costs don’t seem out of the realms of possibility. Remember that Rockstar isn’t just releasing just the GTA VI single player game, it has been building an online platform that will far surpass that of GTA V in size and scope that could last for 15 years or more - that takes significant investment.

rudero2d ago

Absolutely anything to do with the product is in the budget.
That is the very definition of BUDGET.

The majority of the budget is marketing and not producing the game.

Then said companies can tag anything else they want in said “budget”.

And the one thing that gta games have is commercials galore.

Early hands on… in the budget.
Review copies.. in the budget.

senorfartcushion2d ago

How much you have as a budget is different from how much you spend making a product. This is one thing journalists never seem to get

isarai3d ago

I don't know where they get these numbers, absolutely NO games is spending anywhere near that amount on production even including marketing. If we're talking lifetime estimates for like a 10yr plan maybe, but even that would be a very vague projection. RDR2 at the time of release cost less that GTAV did and GTAV cost about 265mil with marketing being an average of about 200-300mil each.

Lightning773d ago

I believe it's somewhere around there. Cod is 700m$ to make. I think GTA could be around there if not more. The insane level of detail in the trailer says it all.

Yeah I believe it's around there personally.

goken2d ago

The $700m cod budget is for tax purposes imho.
I also seriously doubt a game even as top notch as GTA would cost a billion to make.

QuantumMechanic2d ago

Yeah, that would be tax fraud. Public companies are independenly audited. They cannot just put whatever number they want "for tax purposes".

thorstein2d ago

@quantum

It's literally called Hollywood Accounting when movie studios do it.

So, you believe that goken and I are wrong, and Return of the Jedi never turned a profit.

It happens all the time.

anast2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Hate to break it to you Quantum, but multi-billion dollar companies don't have to follow the rules.

QuantumMechanic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

There's a difference between choosing how to allocate corporate/merchandising/royalt y expenses ("Hollywood accounting") and fraudulently inflating project expenses (ILLEGAL). Even if the IRS didn't catch wind of this accounting immediately, the SEC requires quarterly third-party financial audits of public companies. Corporate executives get sued and go to jail for misrepresenting company performance because it affects the value of publically-traded shares.

thorstein2d ago

@Quantim

"It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

You're doubling down and we are just trying to get you to understand.

Of course it's legal, their politicians made it so.

QuantumMechanic1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

There's nothing I "need to understand". I have no problem with "Hollywood accounting" (which is legal because all expenses are taken into account in some capacity on the balance sheet). I was arguing against coming up with some large number "for tax purposes" which cannot come from nothing; it must be documented with receipts/invoices. If a company claims total cost of a production is $700M because they included fixed operating costs, no problem there! If they claim this cost without spending this cost on some component of their operations or the project, that is fraud and they will not pass their SEC audit (if they are a public company). Period.

https://www.sec.gov/about/r...

thorstein18h ago(Edited 17h ago)

"There's nothing I need to understand. I don't have any problem with Hollywood Accounting (which is legal..."

Have a good day, guy.

SimpleSlave2d ago

To be fair, the $700 million in development costs were over the game’s lifecycle, not just development - Black Ops Cold War (2020) in this case. And of course, this also include their marketing campaign.

But then, you take into account Activision Blizzard's shenanigans for not paying taxes, even getting tax refunds, moving billions to tax havens, plus all the money paid by Microsawft and Sony for exclusive deals, and I bet you that figure is substantially way lower than $700 millions. And I do mean SUBSTANTIALLY lower than that.

Oh, and if you think Rockstar hasn't figure out that scheme by now, lol, they have. They all have.
