When I Asked For Better Value From PS Plus, I Didn't Mean Movies

Sony's attempt to justify the PS Plus price hike with the lackluster lineup and features of Sony Pictures Core leaves a lot to be desired.

ABizzel1183d ago (Edited 183d ago )

I don't think it's an issue to add movies to the subscription. However, it is an issue when it's forced on the base version increasing the price for everyone.

While I get millions of people use their consoles as their Entertainment Hub, it is still a gaming console first, and the subscription service should reflect such. Now if this was part of PS+ Extra or Premium, okay understandable, but it should be forced on the base subscription service.

It's also again shows that Sony just completely LACKS a marketing team in touch with global standards. That is one area where Microsoft and I'd even say Nintendo are clearly ahead. If you're going to do something like this, then don't just hike price and then stealth drop mid movies or early access. Have a presser around all of this, and again stick it in the Premium Tier. Have something like:

1. Purchase all Sony Pictures Movies launch Day 1 alongside theaters (Premium Only)
2. Sony Ad-based Music Streaming Service for quick access to background music (Premium Only)
3. Sony Ad-based Exclusive Entertainment Content, sports, concerts, shows, etc... Live and via VR (Premium Only)
4. Enhanced PS1 and PS2 Classics offering Trophy support improved resolution and textures (Premium & Extra)
5. Access to EA Play through PS Game Catalog (Premium & Extra)
6. 1 additional "Monthly Game" Exclusively for PSVR or PSVR2 game per month (Premium & Extra)

At that point it's understandable raising the price on those two specific tiers and most people wouldn't care, because if you want Premium Entertainment for the entire household get the Premium Tier for even $199 without a bunch of complaints. If you want the best overall gaming service PlayStation has to offer without the need for movies, music, and TV content then get the Extra Tier. If you want a basic low cost service with monthly games and online play then get Essentials for $60 or even acceptable at $70, not $80 for content GAMERS don't care about.

I will let my wallet do the talking! Only language corpo’s do understand…

DaCajun182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

Exactly, people need better self control when it comes to these corporate BS, no matter which are being anti-consumer. I don't get the fanboy war garbage.

I see remarks saying but M$ raised there prices, that is not a justified reason for another company to follow suit. That's just a poor excuse for any consumer to have to justify added cost with very little benefit. Neither is justified except in the minds of fanboys. 8 months left to my sub. I've already built my first pc in years. Everything is crossplay now, so the benefit of closed console systems to keep the pc cheaters out is no longer. If I'm forced to play with/against pc since you can't find mp matches in most games with crossplay off. I figured I might as well be on a pc also.

I've had ps plus since the beginning and have owned every PS console. Every now and then they get greedy but this has to be the worst in years. Price hikes to consoles when usually the prices go down during the console lifespan then they raised the prices of all PSplus tiers by almost 30% but only added movies that no one asked for to the top tier only.

As of now none of the consoles are worth their sub prices to me this current generation, maybe next if there will be another. Hopefully, because competition is always good.

S2Killinit182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

Except MS also raised gamepass pricing but didnt add movies. Why can’t Sony do what MS did?

PassNextquestion182d ago

Microsoft just spent $69 billion on a publisher who's content will be on gamepass.

GamerRN182d ago

Microsoft literally is soon to add the highest selling FPS, and an entire catalog of games...

Gamepass has crazy value now! For slightly over $100 a year, you get Call of Duty included, plus all these other great first part titles, ass well as EA games, and many other 3rd party games

JackBNimble182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

Didn't games pass increase by $1 a month?
Adding movies wasn't enough to keep me from canceling my subscription. I can only speak for myself, but as a gamer I would rather have better value for games not movies.

DigitallyAfflicted182d ago

It's not comparison on who deserves my money more, if I don't think what's on offer from both Sony and MS no one gets my money. The basic subscription is forced on to us as it is...

This really comes to every individual, you have to choose what is the right subscription and if it's worth it. Us trying to justify corporations for charging more is silly, if you even doubt price hike being justified then don't pay for it.

S2Killinit182d ago

At JackNimble
No, gamepass raised its price and is more expensive than PSPlus.

"However, it is an issue when it's forced on the base version increasing the price for everyone."

And this is a big problem with subscription services. My DirecTV Steam price went up $10 this month. Oh, but I get an unlimited DVR now! Great. I rarely ever needed more than 6, so the 20 we've had was more than enough. Same thing with Amazon Prime. They tout all these features you have, but in reality, all I want is the free shipping and some of their TV shows. Instead I'm stuck footing the bill for all these other services I'll never touch.

Agent75182d ago

Couldn’t agree more. It’s like shopping for a suit, but the suit goes up in price because it comes with a waistcoat that you didn’t want. These subscriptions need investigating. Another thing you have to look out for is the likes of Netflix. They advertise shows then you find they’re missing episodes and seasons, yet the price goes up. Laughable.

dumahim182d ago

Oh great. Just found out even Prime video is going to have ads next year.

crazyCoconuts182d ago

I think the quality of the games they have been giving has been really good, I can see why they'd raise the price. I just feel like, for people on a budget, there should be a choice that allows online play with no free games. But where you can continue to play the games you already claimed

JackBNimble182d ago

Quality games? I get that gaming is subjective but there are very few games out of the whole catalogue that I found worth playing. The price increase on psn was just solidified the reason I needed to cancel.

crazyCoconuts182d ago

Yeah, on essential they've been giving out good games. Latest being Callisto Protocol, Disco Elysium, etc. And that's the cheapest tier, which is what I assume everyone is upset about because it's needed for online.

DigitallyAfflicted181d ago

I agree. Just like it was on ps3

100 movies from the past 40 years that were most likely free on crackle (Sony owned ad based streaming service) I've taken a look there's some ok things but it's still a large list of old movies that I'm sure pretty much everyone has seen by this point.

So as for value it's not very valuable and you're required to rent it but anything that isn't on that list of 100.

I best this cost them almost nothing to build an app that serves a few freebies when they were already going to use it to distribute movies at a price

ModsDoBetter183d ago

100 relatively old movies*
& the OPPORTUNITY TO BUY Gran Turismo before other streaming platforms.

Core is obviously a relaunch of video that added a category to benefit PlayStation subscribers. The service allows you to build a digital streaming library WITH the perk of select movies being available to watch.

It’s weird to me how people scream they want options and value and anytime it comes they act like a victim forced into a corner.

Nothing about core is forced on you, you don’t HAVE to utilize it at all. Just like you don’t have to watch every show/movie on Netflix, max, Hulu etc. you never hear anyone complain they released old movies on those platforms. But somehow you complain here, just be quiet.

Amplitude183d ago (Edited 183d ago )

You do HAVE to pay for it if you want the most basic of features Steam gives you for free though. Something as simple as playing p2p games online.

May as well lock away the ability to play single player without a sub, increase the price some more and add eBooks.

Rynxie183d ago

They raised the prices of PS+ and included Core to justify it. So, yes, it is being forced on us.

I got an even better 4k smart tv recently. Replaced my smart 4k TV from 5 years ago. Since my old 4k TV was old, it didn't do things well, like the web browser was slow, and most streaming apps stop supporting it, and sometimes, it would have hiccups streaming from apps that did support it. So, long story short, I used my PS5 to do my entertainment streaming. However now, with my new TV, I went back to using my TV for streaming and web browsing. I don't need my PS5 to do any of that anymore.

Nitrowolf2183d ago

Only the price has been jacked up on everyone and that's the "extra" they threw in

No one complains (well they do) about those other streaming services because they have thousands of thousands of shows and movies to pick from. This is just 100, super old, with probably 5-7 movies that are "big" but everyone and their mother has seen since the 90's

And going back to that complaining, people complain about Netflix all the time now because of how much they've been bloating it up with rip off foreign films

Lexreborn2183d ago

So let’s get this clear, the “core” service can be downloaded and not have the plus selection. It’s a movie storefront, the plus side of core has a current rotation of 100 movies old or not they are starting the service just like when Netflix started its streaming it had a terrible collection to its dvd selection.

You guys acting like they have unlimited rights to stream every movie on their platform/storefront. Again yall being ridiculous

porkChop182d ago

"just like when Netflix started its streaming it had a terrible collection to its dvd selection."

Netflix didn't fund/make their own content at that time. Streaming was also a largely unknown and untested market so it wasn't easy to get licensing. That was a bit different.

"You guys acting like they have unlimited rights to stream every movie on their platform/storefront."

Sony Pictures, formerly Columbia Pictures, is one of the Big Five film studios. They've made tons of films and tv series. They literally have a big catalog of their own in-house content.

Lexreborn2182d ago

I’m going to keep my response simple. Not all movies have a universal contract, we don’t know the limitations in play even internally.

The service is a rebrand of a movie storefront ADDED to ps plus. That’s no different then ea access etc. Sony pictures don’t share the same agreements as Sony PlayStation.

Complaining about a new platform offering something to you at no extra cost makes no sense. Just like PlayStation plus getting games over time it will more than likely be the same for core.

Y’all making a bigger deal out of absolutely nothing.

The 5 best games on PlayStation Plus Premium that make subscribing worth it

The PS5 is an incredible console, and if you're lucky enough to have one, or have just received one for Christmas then you'll already know there is a host of great games out there.

What you may not be aware of is that if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium, you'll actually get access to a huge catalogue of titles to play at any time. Many of which you can stream without having to do any downloads. If you have a PlayStation Portal you could even play these titles from your bed.

Abnor_Mal112d ago

Damn the only one I’ve played so far is Miles Morales, although I do own Control and Rift Apart.

ChasterMies111d ago

Odd list. Where is Horizon Forbidden West? Ghost of Tsushima? Demon’s Souls? Returnal? And fun indie games like Superliminal? Where’s “A Plage Tale Requiem” and “Evil West”, the current PS+ Essential offerings?

Exvalos99d ago

Evil west is underrated I'm having a really good time playing it.

juniorpop111d ago

Like seriously? Those are games Extra Tier can get - so not worth upgrading to Premium

PS Plus Is Finally Delivering Solid Titles, And I Hope Sony Keeps It That Way

from eXputer "After the price hike, PS Plus suffered heavy damage, which it seems to be making amends for, but the question is, will this quality continue?"

Crows90113d ago

Wait...ps plus has been decent many months of the past year. January is no exception. Even ps plus worst month is better than alternatives.

Rockstar113d ago

@JW2SD

This looks to be a pretty ironic comment looking through your comment history.
You seem to be quite the fanboy yourself.

Pot, meet kettle...

S2Killinit112d ago

Pretty much confirmed by the numbers.

1nsomniac113d ago

What are you guys talking about!? PS+ has been seen widely by the vast majority as being very poor since the price increase. Take a look at their official blog or any PS+ thread, to see that a good 90% has been people complaining about how bad it has been since the price increase.

Honestly the state of some of you people. They flashed GTA5 at you (a 13 year old game) and all of a sudden you turned skirts and 180’d. All of a sudden it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Pathetic.

Rocketisleague113d ago

Ah its been 2 good months. More than likely it will drop off again because this has happened multiple times for the last 3 years

113d ago
shinoff2183113d ago

That month with all those rpgs a bit ago was fantastic. People gotta realize not every game is gonna be tailored to them. I don't much care for the stuff this month but I won't knock it. Don't knock it till you try it, I have other stuff to play so I'm not trying it therefore not knocking

Abnor_Mal113d ago (Edited 113d ago )

Are they talking about PS Essential and comparing it to Gamepass?

BeHunted113d ago

Game Pass will soon have all the games from Activision Blizzard, and the upcoming Call of Duty game this year might be available on Game Pass from the first day.

shinoff2183113d ago

They will put the most popular games from Activision and blizzard on there. Shame though cause I haven't really liked an Activision game since those superhero rpgs they did back on ps3 and 360. O ultimate alliance. They might throw a few bones of some old school games from when Activision actually tried stuff but cod, the newer Tony hawks , I can't even think of anything else , I'm good on those.

purple101113d ago

Phil Spencer “just wait “

Also just wait for the price increase
Cos that’s coming as soon as cod drops

Reaper22_113d ago (Edited 113d ago )

It's still better than ps plus without Activision Blizzard games.

I remember back when game pass was first starting playstation fans said sony doesn't need a service like that. I guess the times have changed...lol

Einhander1972112d ago

Reaper22_

"I remember back when game pass was first starting playstation fans said sony doesn't need a service like that. I guess the times have changed...lol"

You miss the point.

What people were against was the day one games because they can't bring in the type of revenue needed to support game development because they knew people would stop buying games,

For example there is about a zero percent chance that Starfield has made back the costs of an 8 year dev cycle on less than 3m sales which were the majority were Steam. And reporting tells us that subscription membership across the board are down or at best flat so an argument can't even be made that Starfield pulled in anywhere close to the number of people needed to sustain the type of budgets games like this require. Interestingly Microsoft has since stopped reporting subscription numbers and staff no longer get bonuses based on subscription growth.

Also keep in mind PlayStation already had a Subscription PlayStation Now, and that PlayStation had been giving out games on a subscription since PS3.

RedDevils112d ago

Tbh I haven't play a single Activision game for at least a decade now, I wouldn't notice if suddenly it disappear from the gaming world.

Gamepass destroys ps plus but yeah keep trying to convince yourself otherwise lol.

SyntheticForm113d ago

I honestly think that PC gaming is superior to both in this regard. I think the larger up front cost is offset by so many things.

andy85113d ago

It doesn't though does it. Day one games absolutely. Overall quality and price absolutely not

Barlos113d ago (Edited 113d ago )

GP and PS+ are fine if you never want to own your games.

Personally I prefer to drop money on the games I want to own, not a rental service.
