The new PS5 requires a $30 add-on to stand upright

Sony’s new, slimmer PlayStation 5 model requires a separate $30 / £25 / Є30 stand for the console to safely stand upright.

They raised the digital edition price by $50 and now you have to pay an additional $30 for the stand? Thanks Jim!

"Straight up"!

(But also, **** this guy)

peppeaccardo611d ago

"A horizontal stand will be included with the new PS5 model. Also a new Vertical Stand compatible with all PS5 models will be sold separately at 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY."
As i die hard SONY fan i find this a bit stupid. Why the original PS5 has a stand that allows the PS5 to stay up or on the side and now we have to buy a sold separately stand if we want it to stay up? A bit of a BS move in my humble opinion. I am sure they have cut production costs but they do not include a vertical/side stand with it. Jeeeee

in the 3 years since the PS5 launched, HD prices have gone down even more. Charging you more for something that is inherently cheaper today.

FinalFantasyFanatic611d ago

There's a $30 to $40 difference in price between the old and new SSD, that doesn't quite explain the price difference.

JackBNimble611d ago

How many tb's is the stand, and is there really $30usd ( + the screw of course) worth of plastic in it?

I_am_Batman611d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic: The difference goes in the other direction. The new SSD configuration will probably cost them around 60% compared to what it cost them on the launch models in late 2020/ early 2021 just based on Nand Flash price decreases alone. That's before you take into account that they had to use a fairly complicated 12 channel controller interface to reach the target bandwidth, because high performance Nand Flash wasn't available in the quantities they needed at the time. The PS5 revision will most likely have a simplified 8 channel controller, hence the 1TB size.

You should be enthusiastic about paying more for the Sony PlayStation seal of quality. It’s a real shame you aren’t.

DarXyde611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

Better to be principled.

Foreign concept to you, innit?

crazyCoconuts611d ago

I don't think you need the stand for vertical orientation. Looks to be optional. I'd say the article is a little misleading in saying it's "needed"

isarai612d ago

Doesn't "Require" just helps make it more stable but it stands just fine without it

Wikkid666612d ago

Awesome... how did you get the new console already?

isarai612d ago (Edited 612d ago )

It's shaped exactly like the current PS5, just smaller, which stands upright just fine, doesn't take much thought to see that. The PS2 PS3 and PS4 all had official stands, none of which were required.

IamFrasierCrane611d ago

This is how it’s always been. They sold them for the PS2 as well but they were never required to make the console stand vertically. It’s more for safety than anything.

I bought the optional vertical stands for the PS4/Pro... I'll buy this one as well.

Hope they make a translucent dualsense and edge controllers.

Hofstaderman612d ago

This has been around since the OG ps2. I bought both the horizontal and vertical stands. Loved that blue color and the console looked incomplete without it. If I recall the theme back then was space and water.

anast612d ago

The new PS5 would make a great holiday gift.

purple101612d ago (Edited 612d ago )

I'm thinking to buy another original ps5 and keep it incase I need it for another room. These new ones look cheap. The original exudes quality if you've picked one up youl know

Aloymetal612d ago

Indeed but I hope the Pro model rumor is true for next year, I'll bite for sure.

Mate, if you were an Arab, Sony could sell you sand.

You shouldn't be worried and salty about what I do with my money, mind your business and remember to try those yoga classes I recommended to you but anyway, here's the attention you ordered;)

@Tg far too true, for someone who's such a big gamer, they spend a hell of a lot of time on here doing Sony PR, the occasional damage control and a whole lot of console fanboyism on ant Xbox related article.

It's embarrassing if they're an adult behaving in this manner.

@Aloy

Interesting you say that considering you seem to be fixated on what Xbox gamers do and don't do on almost every Xbox related article. Practice what you preach, kid.

If you were an Eskimo, Sony would sold you ice.

Tempting... but I have to say I am more of an arcade deluxe cab fan. I loved the ones for Galaxy Force, Thunder Blade and After Burner.
