PlayStation legend Mark Cerny discusses PS5, the challenges of making consoles, and his 42-year games industry career
Well... they used to design their own chips. Emotion Engine, Cell, RSX... when they switched to using X86 based chips is now more akin to low-mid cost PCs than before. It may not look like a PC but it pretty much is one. I'd bet it could do productivity stuff just fine if they allowed it to.
Yah, hence the majority of the PS5’s hardware investment going towards an SSD instead of a GPU.
There are countless custom pc gaming rigs out there, and I bet none of them took an SSD-centric approach to their design, like the ps5 did.
I can see where he’s coming from re ps5 not just being a box with parts like a pc. They must also spend an awful lot on r & d just to design the thing so it has aesthetic appeal and typical Japanese with some sort of Philosopy behind the design. Would also think other factors around the custom airflow and the like would cost a lot given that it’s not a standard box shape
Recently Gareth at Skewed and Reviewed spoke with Soham Jaiswal, CEO, SD Games about the pending Eternal Damnation game. The game is a hybrid of RPG and RTS and cast players as a Spider.
I wouldn't like to see how series S runs UE5 games. They're pretty demanding from what I know so far, you need a powerful higher end GPU on PC to consistently keep above 60fps. Someone did a decent comparison video here, granted it's only one game, but still. https://youtu.be/FbJA-P3sRg... even the standard consoles will struggle with all the dips going by this DF video https://youtu.be/IMytJKuIjQ...

Urm…yeah. Sure.
"We wanted to make sure we had a sub-$300 console because we want to grow.”
so what hes saying is, they wanted to outsell the ps5. well that bkfired tremendously.
and "growing" is fine, but you now have devs revolting because it is such a damn mess ha.
I was an Xbox player who built a PC who now subscribes to Game Pass. If I have the ability to play games on my phone say while I’m on lunch, I’m down for that. Giving players more access to their game content isn’t bad. However, as the console generation is moving forward, those consoles always went to be at least 1-2 steps behind a PC. Not to mention refreshing the entire library of games every generation (a huge reason why I got a PC). Phil was put in place in the early 2010’s because he’s a gamer and I feel like he’s done a decent job but the mainstays have fallen short. Halo has been an abomination since Halo 3, the MCC has just finally been fixed to what it should’ve been nearly a decade later, Gears of War hasn’t been good since the second one, and now we’re looking at Starfield which could be the next No Man’s Sky. I don’t see anything that makes me thing “oh, I must have an Xbox.” The only thing I’m interested in on a PlayStation is Horizon: Forbidden West and Bloodbourne which I’m sure are going to get PC ports in the near future. So what’s the point of getting a Gen 9 console at this point?
TL:DR
Usual bollocks.
