Baldur's Gate 3 Crushes The "Turn-Based Is A Relic Of The Past" Perception

Amidst the thoughts of "turn-based is stale" and "turn-based was a product of obsolete hardware," Baldur's Gate 3 lands to debunk them all.

shinoff2183647d ago

Shows that turn based is still a usable method in rpgs. Dq11, baldurs gate 3, persona 5 were all pretty damn successful. There's still a very viable market for it.

raWfodog647d ago

I love both turn-based and action-based gameplay. Of course they can both co-exist in this gaming ecology and, as the article stated, it's all about how they are implemented. I don't believe one is better than the other.

Seraphim647d ago

the problem is the sale difference between a vast majority of action vs turn based. Publishers are seemingly less likely to cater to a smaller crowd of turn based gamers as opposed to swinging for the mainstream by going action. 2 cents.

Like raWfodog said, though, they can both co-exist. Much as I love turn based I simply could not play only those games. Variety is a good thing, but I do hope more developers create some turn based bangers. Like the manual transmission, turn based games are a bit of a dying breed.

ZycoFox647d ago

I personally found turn based games kinda garbage. Worms was ok during the dial-up days because the multiplayer was fun and a lot of strategy involved.. Anything else I can't think of, Mario Party is fun but other than the board it's not really classed as a turn based game.

raWfodog646d ago

Turn-based gameplay is not for everyone of course. But some favorites of mine are the Persona, Trails, and Dragonquest series of RPGs. But, as I've already mentioned, I also enjoy action-based combat RPGs as well.

Obscure_Observer647d ago

"There's still a very viable market for it."

I´m currently playing Marvel´s Midnight Suns and it´s awesome! Every RPG and Marvel fan should try it!

Action, Turn-based, WRPG, JRPG, just give me all of it!

Tapani647d ago

Yeah, and Ryu Ga Gotoku turn-based system is fun, Shin Megami Tensei core series as well (albeit it is probably now the niche series). OSII was even better than Baldur's gate 3 and more complex. Into the Breach and XCom 1 and 2, Wasteland games etc. are also very good. Age of Wonders 4 and Planetfall. Darkest Dungeon. Man, the list just goes on and on.

I think the turn-based system is alive and well, it just gets strange news articles written about it for no reason.

shinoff2183646d ago

Younger people with no attention span. I know I get a bad rap like I don't like action rpgs but I actually do. Star ocean is one of my top series. I just don't like what they did with ff. It feels extremely westernized.

It will be the first for me.

Crazy that BG3 delivers such uncompromising depth (so uncompromising that they got Xbox to bend the knee on Series parity), and is celebrated for it (as they rightfully deserve), in the same general timeframe that Final Fantasy reduced itself to almost braindead simplicity.

I was telling a friend I've played BG3 with how it's been hard for me to go back and finish 16. It's like I can close my eyes and mash square+triangle to defeat almost any basic fight, while in BG3 I have to plan out something as basic as walking across a bridge without getting stuck in a spiderweb.

Heck, I accidentally sold light armor and Astarion isn't proficient in Medium, so I even have him walking around naked so he can still fire all his abilities and spend an action putting on the Medium when I can't avoid a close encounter.

MeatyUrologist647d ago

Yeah, THATS why you have Astarion walking around naked ;)

andy85647d ago

Are you playing with the hand holding rings on because that isn't my experience at all. If you're not dodging and using eikon abilities you're dying. Especially on Final Fantasy difficulty which was actually challenging. And I don't understand the comparison anyway really. Dont get me wrong I'm absolutely not the biggest fan of 16 but It's a turn based game vs an action game and the easiest difficulty was made to let every skill of player enjoy it.

Tacoboto647d ago

I do not have any of the assist rings on, I've got a defense boost and attack boost, don't remember what the third does but I think it's a boost to a specific ability. In the basic fights traversing around, the difficulty is nonexistent. Monster hunts and bosses - yes. If FF difficulty was provided to us from the start, I would have a better opinion of it.

The comparison is pretty simple to understand: A hardcore turn-based game, vs the latest game in a franchise that used to be turned-based but now feels like strategy has been basically removed until your second playthrough.

--Onilink--647d ago

Other than the very beginning while I was getting used to the combat, I felt the game was mostly easy and that it got easier as you progressed (to the point that I think the only time I died twice was when I was doing the Lvl 50 Dragon Hunt while being about 17 levels below, and I still got it on the 3rd try at that level)

The boss fights while pretty spectacular, were also rather easy too.

I’m actually looking forward to doing the NG+ because of the higher difficulty it unlocks which has different encounters too

Ryuken1985647d ago

That's like comparing an apple to a pear.

Even though if XVI is piss easy it is still the hardest in the series, and still NO ONE has ever complained about the difficulty in any other FF game.

Hell, who in the hell did even buy previous games in the series based on it was turn-based?

Tacoboto647d ago

People who were fans of JRPGs would buy games that played like JRPGs...

Ryuken1985647d ago

"People who were fans of JRPGs would buy games that played like JRPGs..."

Like how the whole jrpg genre was inspired by action-rpgs?

"Nihon Falcom's Dragon Slayer, released in 1984, is a historically significant title that helped lay the foundations for the Japanese role-playing game industry"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Jrpgs has never been defined by the battle system though...

dumahim647d ago

You should be able to go back to that vendor and buy it back.

Turn based can be good, but it's not superior as a lot of people say.

franwex647d ago (Edited 647d ago )

Literally no one has stated that about turn base. Some people simply don’t like it as much, others do.

The only RPG series that got away from it is just Final Fantasy. That’s literally it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is The Kind Of Game That Makes Me Wish I Could Play One Thing At A Time

I respect people who can dig deep on one game, and only one game, but I can't do it.

I used to play multiple games at a time but because of the time constraints I have I don’t have a choice but to play one game at a time or I’ll end up with some unfinished games. I like to get platinums for the games I enjoy the most so it can take me a long time to get to the next game.

It definitely takes some will power as I always have a stack of games I want to play at all times. But most of the games I play are really good and I am fully immersed when I’m playing a single game at a time.

raWfodog7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Same here. I’ll focus on a game that I really enjoy and get the most out of it before moving onto the next title. That is why I have a massive backlog of games now.

Armaggedon8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Same for me. I play so many games, currently playing oblivion, expedition, blades of fire, bg3 with friends , avowed, and Nioh 2. After learning more about myself and gaining mastery, I have developed an ability to get fulfillment from a game without needing to “complete” it. Unless of course, a game hooks me for the story, in which case I have to complete it to see what happens. I have discovered that in terms of gameplay, one can get most if not all of the expected experience in about 25% of progress through play.

Ninver8d ago

Sounds like renting is the best way to go in your case. No point in buying games you won't complete.

Armaggedon8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It depends on what one deems as “complete.” For some, it is completing the story, and for others it is completing all tasks and objectives. Usually when this happens, people will feel “that was fun, whats next.” There is always a whats next. Cant think of anyone that has consumed media and thought “I am completely satisfied and will not need to play or watch another. I have simply mastered this “hunger” if you will. I am able to get so far in a game and then move to another without needing to reach a certain requirement. A benefit of this is that I do not get bored, as that game I didn’t beat still has mystries to unravel and new things I haven’t done.
