Final Fantasy XVI Has Done 'Fine' In Terms Of Sales, Says Circana Analyst

PlayStation Universe writes: "Mat Piscatella of Circana (previously NPD Group) has revealed that Final Fantasy XVI has performed ‘fine’ in terms of sales, following widespread reports that the game didn’t meet expectations at Square Enix and had done less than stellar numbers."

solideagle285d ago

why is everyone is concern about Final Fantasy XVI sales lol it sold 3 million isn't it :)

Shane Kim285d ago

I think because the company predicted it to sell more. Now their predictions might be unrealistic, but if it don't meet their predictions then it's a loss in their eyes.

CrimsonWing69285d ago

Because if a game doesn’t sell well it can lead to the publisher feeling like it’s not worth investing in the IP.

Take Onimusha for example. Capcom literally dropped plans for remastering the series and pursuing more entries because literally 10 people bought the Remaster of the first game.

Bottom line, sakes are important and FF is a beloved franchise for many. Not to mention the whole changing the game’s genre to “sell” more to people who aren’t interested in the series. Clearly, it did not pan out.

BehindTheRows284d ago

Clearly it did, as Square said they were happy with the result.

“Sales of Final Fantasy 16 did not meet Square Enix's high expectations, said president Takashi Kiryu.”

Yea, that TOTALLY sounds like Square is happy with the results…

Also, sales aside, the whole pivot from turn-based to real-time was a decision made to make Final Fantasy appeal to a different audience. When I say sales didn’t pan out, I’m referring explicitly to that. Which, wouldn’t you know, changing up a game for an audience that isn’t interested in the game didn’t work the way they wanted… go figure.

Tacoboto284d ago

It's for a multitude of reasons. Fanboyism as one. The reality of it releasing on fewer platforms than its predecessor another. How Forspoken performed from the developer of its predecessor.

Square Enix also has a bad history of how it announced and framed sales of games back when they had Tomb Raider and western studios, sometimes with higher raw sales numbers but still suggesting they were disappointments. Tomb Raider 2013 especially was noted as a disappointment to them despite millions of sales, sales higher than what FFVII Remake would go on to get in a similar launch timeframe. I recall reading before (nearly a decade ago) that Rise only happened because Microsoft provided funding of like $50 million to put it on Xbox exclusively at first.

Maybe return to the roots of what makes a FF game, instead of a GoW with DMC combat.
Its an alright game, just with a FF skin on.

gold_drake284d ago

id be interested to know what that even means?

cause im pretty sure, having played all ff games, that they're all pretty much different and never the same.

CrimsonWing69282d ago

He means the “identity” of the games. More specifically I think FF1-9 as being the games people mention wanting FF games to return to.

If you need a single game to encapsulate what it means “to be” FF for fans of the classic games just play anyone of those entries. I think they represent the “roots” of FF games and I agree, they should maybe try to give it a shot again making a game like those with next-Gen technology.

I will say, if you’re questioning what an FF game is when we people talk about going back to the “older games” just play FF9, and I’m not joking when I say this, but just make note of the turn-based battles, the going back and forth between places on the world map, all the mini-games, simple things like finding hidden treasures, hidden areas, super bosses, recruiting party members, and do like a complete analysis and compare it to the recent game. I think you’ll get what it means then.

I picked FF9 because it really feels like everything they’ve accumulated and learned while making the games throughout the years and made a game. I went through all the Pixel Remasters and I’d even recommend FF5 and FF6 if you have access to those and the. Okay FF9 after those, it becomes way more clearer what old-school fans want.

franwex284d ago

In my eyes this is the first (of many) true current gen game. With all the positive word of mouth I’m sure it will sell throughout the life of the gen.

It’s like a Zelda game in a way.

I don't know about ''great'' rpg.

Most epic fight sequences and presentation? Yes

Worst side quests ever? Yes
Boring traversal? Yes
Empty worlds? Yes
Demo is infinitely more mature than the actual game? Yes
FF16=MMO side quests + Devil May Cry Lite

Alos8841d ago

I'd give it the great part, it's the RPG part I find dubious.

EternalTitan42d ago

There is no Roleplaying/decision making in this game.
No crafting there isnt even character builds because just like Dante/Bayonetta Clive has all skills and loadouts available to him.

CrimsonWing6941d ago (Edited 41d ago )

What do you mean there’s no role playing? Also, I’m fairly certain I made builds with Eikon abilities and I’ve gone to the blacksmiths to literally select craft weapons and gear. 🤷‍♂️

EternalTitan38d ago

How many 'builds' can you make?
Weapons and gear only increase numbers. Tell me about elemental weaknesses and status.

CrimsonWing6938d ago (Edited 38d ago )

@EternalTitan

Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element.

What statuses are you asking about? F*cking status buffs and debuffs? You talking about stats that increase with gear crafting? Because all that’s present in the game.

The fact that you even admit there’s builds and RPG elements contradicts your claim. No matter how limited they may be, they exist in the game, therefore it is an RPG. I think the correct critique is instead of claiming it’s “not an RPG” you really mean to say it’s an RPG not as in-depth as it’s contemporaries. Regardless, it’s an RPG nonetheless even without “elemental weakness” playing in combat.

@CrimsonWing69
"Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element"
Why not?
Where is your source for this?

CrimsonWing6937d ago

@EternalTitan

So you’re telling me if a game has all the elements and mechanics of an RPG except elemental weakness exploits in combat that they’re not an RPG?

C’mon man, how about you show me where it says an RPG must have elemental weakness mechanics?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t a “great” RPG. I am in the camp that it IS an RPG, no DMC game I’ve played is designed like this… but in terms of being a great RPG… well, I much prefer the RE-Trilogy over this.

That being said, I do think the DLCs have probably the best boss battles I’ve played in a game. Omega was crazy and the battle theme just amplified that for me. In the other hand, I’m struggling to think of a game that has a boss battle as great as Leviathan. Like, I played it on FF mode and it was sooooo intense and just a gorgeous and fun experience. The music was also top notch!

However, I really disliked most of everything of FF16. The Benedikta arc was fantastic, but after that the game was boring and a slog to get through. I think the boss battles were the best parts, but also inconsistent for me. Bahamut was peak for the base game, but everything else didn’t surpass that experience until you play the DLC bosses.

VersusDMC41d ago

The 2 DLC's were great. 2 new eikon ability sets (leviathan and...) and a survival/bloody palace mode with Rising Tide were great as well.

repsahj41d ago

The Base game is already great for me IMHO and the 2 DLC will even make it better.
