It's not bad tech but they never went all in on it

_SilverHawk_291d ago

Why would they stop making kinect? Controllers ,keyboard and mouse are outdated tech. Kinect is the future

_SilverHawk_291d ago

Sarcasm missed a lot. Im guessing some people don't remember kinect advertisements where they were saying controllers were archaic and kinect is the future.

I remember being a massive fan of the wii but quickly realized that motion controls for gaming were rubbish compared to traditional tactile controllers.

Smok91291d ago (Edited 291d ago )

Well they do say there’s a certain level of intelligence required to grasp sarcasm. You’re also on N4G. So this was to be expected.

Inverno291d ago

I think they went too in on it, which is why it failed. Trying to force the thing onto everyone the way they did last Gen was very dumb decision.

Vits291d ago (Edited 291d ago )

I would argue that it was both. They burned a lot of goodwill trying to force it in the X360 when the tech was just not that good. And they burned the rest when they drop it completely during the XONE era when the tech was actually mature. So they never really struck the balance that was needed for this accessory to create something cool.

DarXyde291d ago

Mandating it definitely didn't help, especially with the bombshell reporting the summer leading up to release that Microsoft was a bit too chummy with the NSA.

Ultimately, I think the tech was revolutionary for its time. I just think there were a lot of lessons to be learned from their approach and implementation.

Thing is, I don't get the sense that Microsoft is interested in niche content. Kinect was the product of Microsoft thinking that Wii was the new direction for gaming. When it wasn't well adopted by big titles, they planned to mandate it... Then the backlash forced them into a "soft mandate" position where you don't have to have it connected, but every Xbox would include it. When implementation was scarce (and because it was more expensive than PS4), they released a cheaper, Kinect-less SKU.

While I wouldn't trust these camera devices, especially from Microsoft, I have to give them credit for trying something really unique at the time. I think the experience has made them skittish at the idea of supporting innovative peripherals, but I can respect the attempt.

1Victor291d ago (Edited 291d ago )

@phoenix:” It's not bad tech but they never went all in on it”
So you wanted them to go harder on it than making a system (xb1) based on it and claim it was “essential to the system functions and can’t be turned of at the flip of a switch “ 🤦🏿 then do a 180* and flip the switch when ps4 got too far ahead.
Edit oh and let’s not forget how RARE was forced to do avatars and Kinect only stuff

merlox291d ago

The Kinect is good for paranormal investigating. It can be used for mapping in spirits that you cannot see. All you need is a USB adapter and the software to use it correctly.

CrimsonWing69291d ago

It’s bad tech, try playing Steel Battalion and tell me it’s great tech.

I thought the Kinect died long ago.

Wikkid666291d ago

Consumer product line, yes. But it was being used for corporate and industrial uses.

ApocalypseShadow291d ago (Edited 291d ago )

Yeah. That thing was dead as a door nail. And it deserves it.

Microsoft saw Sony working with the company on PS2
https://youtu.be/jYHr0I-iFH...
and bought the tech out from under them. Then tried to play it off like they created the tech and forced it on their base that blew up in their face. While secretly, it was going to spy on who was in the room to monetize gamers and push ads.

It had no significant games whatsoever except casual trash while being an expensive mic. And gamers wonder why it's dead. Lol.

The funny thing is PS Move, with "buttons" as Kevin Butler would say, lives on working for VR and still usable on PS5 through PSVR.

XBManiac291d ago

That's what Phil said in 2016, yes.

Outside_ofthe_Box291d ago

Didn't know 'Azure Kinect' was a thing.

AmUnRa291d ago

Another failure from MS, when you saw the promo's about Kineckt you tought this will be revolutional and great for gaming...it backfired, but thats MS overpromising and underdelivering.... As usual.....

DOMination-291d ago

Underdelivering yes. Failure... well Isn't the original Kinect for 360 the biggest selling additional peripheral ever released for a console?

I'm sure MS would take a few more failures like that.

10AM PT/1PM ET/6PM london time.
on June 9th.

this is so odd. we had ps before the summer fest and now xbox after.

lelo2play4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Summer Fest and the Sony show were both crap, let's hope Microsoft and Ubisoft shows are decent.

(the way this is going, I'm not asking for good/great shows, simply asking for decent shows...)

I miss E3.

RupeeHoarder3h ago

State of Play is a 30 minute sizzle reel. It is not meant to compete with the yearly Xbox showcase.

Daver2h ago

Diablo 4 expansion? Even if the game is bad.

Crows902h ago

I'm definitely of the mind that d4 was complete crap at release...but the state of it right this moment is not complete crap. They've simplified a lot which actually helped their overtly stupid itemization.

End game content is still kind of stupid but at least progression and itemization is better.

Daver1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

@crows90

Maybe but it is still boring. It might be a little bit better but it is not a good game.

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Xbox had typically kept the old e3 dates alive it seems to always fall on Queens / Kings birthday holiday in Aus only reason I've noticed as it used to be a day off to engross myself in e3 showcases but nowadays it's nothing

Lightning771d 22h ago

The rumor is 30 games with a nearly 2 hour show. I hope so I, been saying they need to go balls to the wall with their showcase. That's according to Grubb again. Yeah a huge pinch of salt he's only been wrong or half right about some stuff.

There's also suppose to be a Wu Tang Clan game that's a kungfu action RPG featuring the legendary hip hop group New Yorks own Wu Tang Clan. You read right Wu Tang Clan kungfu action RPG.

Sounds weird, random and quirky but hey I'm down to see it.

romulus2321h ago

Bet the title has Shaolin in it.

purple10118h ago

State of decay 3 info is leaking on twitter!

Looks good. Personally don’t play horror/ zombie games, but I appreciate it’s a good game so that’s a win for Xbox fans.

Lord knows they need a win at the moment

ThinkThink15h ago

Appreciate the concern, but I think we'll be just fine. Hope you all enjoy tomorrow's show.

Obscure_Observer4h ago

"The rumor is 30 games with a nearly 2 hour show. I hope so I, been saying they need to go balls to the wall with their showcase."

MS had the best showcases in the last few years.

This year, the bar is so low with those last showcases, that imo, MS and Ubisoft doesn´t even need to make much of an effort to beat them.

"That's according to Grubb again. Yeah a huge pinch of salt he's only been wrong or half right about some stuff."

Grubb was right about the last State of Play. Just a few days for the end of the month, he´d continued and insisted that it was going to happen. And he was right! Sony made a last minute announcement for whatever reason, but the guy was spot on.

derek1h ago

Grubb has been pretty spot on in his comments regarding showcases. You can tell he's not guessing, he knows in advance.

Sonic18811h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Microsoft has had the best showcases for the last 3-4 years. The problem with Microsoft and the Xbox division is their reputation and trademark around the world. That's what's really affecting them.

anast21h ago

This show is going to be painful.

Elda21h ago

Hopefully not knowing most games shown will be multiplats & some eventually multiplats.

anast21h ago

The presentation is going to be the painful part. There might be some good games though.

You can always make a drinking game out of it for every time they say the words "Made for a modern audience".

I'd like to be able to watch it through to the end though...

This is fun. Some back and forth.

No, but those emojis sure seem like you might be.

Crows902h ago

You'd think that every now and then even these dispassionate fools may do a good job...they've disappointed every single year since before release of Xbox one....that's a really long streak of disappointments...lol

anast2h ago

For sure. they have the money to put on a top tier show, but I'm afraid it will look like an event where super rich people are noticeably trying to be cheap. And they have this strange smile like they know they are trying o get over on people. It just makes for an awkward and tasteless showing.

+ Show (7) more repliesLast reply 2h ago
Elda21h ago

I hope it's a good showing knowing most games that will be shown will be multiplats & XB timed exclusives that'll eventually become multi-plats.

Tacoboto18h ago

It is what it is at this point.

At least the good games will have a chance to be bought, take advantage of the superior DualSense, and *maybe* give those studios a better shot at survival.

They'll also have better shadows, and run with higher dynamic res on the PS5 Pro.

Lightning7715h ago(Edited 15h ago)

So if they're multiplat would you suddenly like Xbox games?

You never have before you've made that clear several times over.

Elda14h ago

I have an XBSX. I also own a PS5 & a Switch. What's your point??

Lightning7713h ago

My point is what I said. You don't like Xbox games, you've said it repeatedly. So would you suddenly like Xbox games if they were available on PS5.

Meta Is Doing With VR What Apple And Sony Have Struggled To Do

Shaz from GL: "Where Sony is ramping down support for PSVR2, and Apple are reconsidering their future with the Vision Pro, Meta and the Quest 3 continue to shine."

ApocalypseShadow4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I'll admit that Facebook is doing more for VR than others. But they also have blown over 50 billion dollars so far and growing in R&D, building the meta verse, buying up exclusives and underpricing their products below build price, to kill competition in the stand alone space. Sony and Valve aren't willing to go into the red at an unheard level to capture the market. We know Sony could build a stand alone device that beats Quest just by the features in PS VR 2 and the new stand alone headset they built. But the new Sony would rather build a device they can profit from day one.

But, Sony so far has profited on hardware and on software. They just don't seem willing to spend the money on marketing, selling under build price or spending millions on making in-house VR exclusives for PS VR 2. Which sucks big time. They're just letting 3rd parties and indies run the show.

Article also doesn't mention that Apple's headset is more a developers product than a mass market item. To say they are looking into making a cheaper one for the next iteration is speaking the obvious. Duh. That was always the case. Build something the public sees as quality not can't afford, then make another that the masses can afford. TVs, cars, cellphones etc all were once expensive. Now, they're cheap to buy with many options to choose from. And Apple isn't even selling VP as a VR headset. I'm well aware that Apple's true intentions is to build a device that pushes AR with VR as an option. Not build a VR device. Because they know eventually that they want to replace the cellphone with AR glasses or an AR headset. If they cared about games, they would have launched as a gaming device.

Lastly, Facebook launched Quest 3 last year. But has not mentioned how many they sold up to this point. Why is that? Besides Quest 2 selling more by being cheap, the market can't move forward until they start selling more Quest 3 headsets than 2. Maybe the new exclusive Batman and Hitman games will help. But we'll see.

Abnor_Mal3d ago

Not dead, but definitely on life support from the third party devs and PC crowd who may just purchase the headset.

Although I saw someone say that the module adapter will no allow haptics and adaptive triggers to work, but I don’t know if any of that is true.

Babadook73d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Nope. Not yet.

It’s tough to say what its future will bring. There is still decent support. It seems to have sold decently too. Sony seems absent in a direct way though.

Jingsing3d ago

The issues Meta have is they are Meta. I'll never buy a Meta product, Every Quest headset they release is always a case of it's not quite there from a hardware perspective and the game content is mostly from indie devs. Selling what should be a AAA experience with C tier games is a non starter.

helicoptergirl4d ago

Meta is also Billions and billions in the hole in regards to VR. If Sony were to do what Meta has done, they'd be bankrupt

ChasterMies3d ago

Meta is losing billions on a business that theh will probably walk away from like they did the Facebook phone. Temper your expectations of your investments in Meta’s hardware.

franwex3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I do wish Sony would release more for PSVR. It’s a neat product, but they don’t support it much. It may have the same fate as the Vita.

I know it’s two completely separate products as Vita was stand alone, and PSVR is a companion to PS consoles. More 1st party support would really boost it though.

InUrFoxHole3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They are done supporting it. They're relying on pc to do it for them. Sony even paused production because it's not selling

Abnor_Mal3d ago

They paused production to get rid of inventory, doesn’t mean the headset isn’t selling, it’s just not selling as fast as Sony thought it would. But with their half assed approach to the headset and lack of first party games, it’s not surprising, saddening, but not surprising.

Meta out here buying up all the exclusives, this is the only part of the gaming market where I feel exclusives should not be a thing since the market is “still in its infancy”.

InUrFoxHole3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

That's exactly what it means... you think people are buying a headset with min support for the price of the console? It's done man. Sadly because like the vita the tech is good and deserved better

Chocoburger3d ago

I own PS VR 1, and it is packed with tons of games to pick from in nearly every genre you could think of. While the technology may be rudimentary compared to newer headsets, it still works, and is fun to play, which is what matters most.

Its a shame that PS VR 2 is having such a slow start, because the tech behind it is brilliant. Its currently on sale for $100 USD off, that needs to be a permanent price drop.

We need more first party games on PS VR 2, the fact that Jim Ryan shut down Sony London Studios right before he left was moronic, they should have been upgrading their hit game Blood & Truth for PS VR 2! What a stupid decision.
