Immersion Could Help Sony

Vibration hasn't been this big of a deal since 'Sex in the City.' As of right now, Sony's PS3 will not include rumbling or vibrating technology in its next-generation controller. An outstanding legal issue with Immersion (to the tune of roughly $91M) coupled with Sony's claim that the rumbling technology is incompatible with the motion sensing technology in the PS3 controller has current iterations of Sony's controller sitting idle.

How will rumbling controllers play into the next-generation console war? Will gamers notice if the controller doesn't vibrate taking a corner in Gran Turismo, will they care? Immersion President and CEO Vic Viegas certainly thinks so: "If you can see a single blade of grass in Madden and hear the hot dog vendor in the stands, but you don't feel the tackle? That's not going to sit well with gamers."

It is painfully obvious that the overall immersive experience of gaming will be negatively effected if rumble is not included in the PS3 controller. Any fanboy who takes the tired old argument that rumbe is not neccessary because they personally turn it off while playing is speaking for the clear minority of gamers. While Sony has to downplay the move comments from Immersion to the effect that they are able to produce a controller that incorporates both rumble and a gyroscope effectively indicate that Sony's statements are nothing more than dammage control.

The rumble feature is a part of the gaming experience. In those intense games when the controller rumbles man that sh!t is a must!!!

For awhile everybody knows whats going on with the lawsuit and Sony claiming they can't put rumble in the controller because of incompatability (Lie) with the motion sensing technology in the PS3 controller. Until I see different news about this I really don't care anymore. All this news could do is start another flame war. Maybe soon we can move on.
