This game looks good but I haven't played DnD before. How annoying is leaving everything to a dice roll?

You get lots of bonuses to what your character is skilled at in and out of combat. You can always save scum dialouge options....but the great thing about this game so far in early access is the failed rolls lead to fun things and great replayability if you let them.

I agree. A lot of the fun is in failed rolls.

It's normal for table-top games. I enjoy the dice roll mechanics because almost nothing is automatic.
