Why Microsoft Needs to Release an Xbox Series X Mid-Gen Upgrade to Compete with the Rumored PS5 Pro

As Sony plans a PS5 Pro model, Microsoft needs an Xbox Series X mid-gen upgrade. A new Xbox with upgraded specs would match Sony, satisfy enthusiasts, boost sales, and take advantage of improved chip supply.

I still find it hilarious that Microsoft considers Series X their Pro mode and Series S the baseline. PS5 Pro will likely sell truckloads while Series XL probably wouldn’t move many units considering they’re not selling very well to begin with.

RavenWolfx698d ago

As someone that owns a Series X, I basically call the Series S the budget model, or a GamePass Machine. If the Series X is the higher-end model already and is only comparative to the PS5, Microsoft will definitely have to step up their game with a new model.

S2Killinit698d ago

If what MS recently said about not offering a mid-gen console because series X IS their mid-gen console, I would assume a class action suit for misleading the consumers at launch. Not sure if it would succeed but definitely they would have a case I think.

crazyCoconuts698d ago

They'll most likely come up with something. Wait a year later again so they can trump the specs

fr0sty698d ago

My guess is that the "X is our pro model" comment means that the Series generation is going to end sooner than expected, and a new "next gen" console will be launched to compete with the PS5 Pro...

Or, MS could just say "f-it" and decide to step back from hardware, since we're now 4 generations in and they still can't get out of third place. With GamePass doing so well, they may decide that it's more profitable for them to just release it on as many platforms as they possibly can rather than try to keep treading water in the hardware race.

AmUnRa698d ago (Edited 698d ago )

When MS would put out a Xbox Series X Pro, developers must make 3 versions of theyr games...a S version, a X version and a X Pro version..they would not be amused i can tell you that...
And MS is still not make any money on theyr hardware. A more expensive Pro would lose them more money cous development of hardware is not that cheap, so there is a change thar they must sell the Pro under the price of the cost of the hardware, that would be not smart...

darthv72698d ago

@fr0sty... best they did was 2nd place in the 6th gen.

fr0sty698d ago (Edited 698d ago )

@darth, no, by the time it was said and done, PS3 was ahead of them, Wii was in 1st. They took the third place L that gen too.

Lifetime sales:

360 85.73m
PS3 87.4m

darthv72698d ago (Edited 698d ago )

@fr0sty... 360/PS3 are 7th gen.
6th was Xbox, GCN, PS2. XB came in 2nd, a very distant 2nd... but still 2nd.

I find it funny that 3 people agreed w/you and 4 disagreed w/me (as of this writing). Obviously dont know the difference between 6th and 7th gen.

You know that's just a bullshit excuse right?
I think MS just didn't think Sony was going to do a pro this gen, obviously I'm guessing.
And nothing has been announced yet anyway and it's still just a rumor, although I'm sure it's going to happen.

Profchaos697d ago

Ms also stated that they believed that they weren't going to be able to drop the price on the series X so they needed to offer the series s as a attractive option to people who couldn't afford the X

So adding a third SKU that devs have to code for and consumers have to consider is really not attractive

neutralgamer1992698d ago

PS5 is at 40 million while XSX-S is at 21 million as of July 3rd. I don’t think a pro model is going to make that big of a difference. But this could be MS way to get the brand a fresh start. PlayStation is just running circles around Xbox brand.

Phil was right when he said that market share is hard to get back. People who switched over to PS4 and now PS5 most probably have huge library of games and friends who play on the platforms so they can’t switch and won’t switch to Xbox. This is where losing all the momentum Ms had built during 360 days really hurt and matter

Ashunderfire86697d ago

Not too bad 21 million! Still behind, but not way behind! More solid games and those numbers will go up.

FinalFantasyFanatic697d ago

Yeah, hardware isn't their issue, so giving people a more powerful machine isn't going to help push Xboxs.

spoonard696d ago

I wonder what just the Series X is at... I'd bet there are more Series S's out there than Series X's. And that's laughable.

--Onilink--698d ago

I though the Pro only represented about 20% of the PS4 sales (and thats assuming that someone that bought a Pro wouldn’t have bought a regular if that were the only option)
I wouldn’t really call that selling truckloads. Both the Pro and One X were never the biggest sellers

spoonard696d ago

20% of last gen for Sony is over 20 million units. Thats not bad for a mid-gen offering.

StarkR3ality698d ago

These mid gen refreshes are just another reason why I'm favouring PC gaming more and more, genuinely might as well get a PC and upgrade the GPU every 4 years. Currently have a 3080 and I know that the 5080 (admittedly will cost more than a PS5 pro probably) will offer 2 - 3x times the performance of any PS5 Pro/Series X pro.

OptimusDK697d ago

Agree - if they do a refresh again - I am done i will switch to PC for good. This is just not viable economically anymore. If we need to upgrade every 4-5 years - i can just as well buy a PC.

FinalFantasyFanatic697d ago

They make sense though, if I buy a PS5 now, I'd have zero interest in a PRO version, but since I haven't bought a PS5, if they release a PRO version, than I might as well buy that version of the PS5.

That and you don't NEED to upgrade to the PRO version of any console, same as you don't need to upgrade your PC every year or every other year (I'm still rocking a 1080 ti while playing at 1440p, every other PC part is new).

Abracadabra698d ago (Edited 698d ago )

I think Microsoft will not release a Mid-Gen upgrade because they want to release their next gen console a year or two before Sony releases the PS6. Next gen Xbox in 2026-2027, and PS6 in 2027-2028... if they can produce a steady stream of exclusives from their many studios, they can pull if off even if next gen Xbox is less powerful then the PS6.

In the past, releasing the Xbox 360 a year before the PS3 worked pretty well for Microsoft.

GamerRN697d ago

I think that means giving up on this generation, and hoping to win the next by way of an early start.

I don't think that will work because the momentum playstation will have, plus they will be able to extend this gen and not have to release a new console to compete only to later release and even more powerful PS6! That would likely could end Xbox. I think we have to see how the momentum swings when the Activision sale completes and we see if it actually affects console sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic697d ago

Let's be real, power isn't the issue here, so a mid-gen upgrade or a new gen console won't change the current console standings.

rob-GP695d ago

"In the past, releasing the Xbox 360 a year before the PS3 worked pretty well for Microsoft." - how?

They rushed to release the 360 before the PS3, leading to millions and millions of defective units breaking and MS having to lose over a billion dollars with free replacements world-wide. Then, millions invested in R+D so they could produce new units which didn't suffer the same fault.

Not to mention, they never were close to selling the same number of consoles as the PS3 due to two reasons:
1. The above RRoD issue - many people had to buy multiple units to replace their Xbox's which die out of warranty, inflating the sales numbers when it shouldn't have
2. MS started banning modded consoles once a year - this forced all modded console owners to buy a new console, mode them again, then enjoy playing online until the following year where they were banned again. This, just like the above, created more sales which shouldn't count as they were replacement consoles in the millions.

Sure, Xbox had some good exclusives back then, but that wasn't due to releasing early, that was due to management. No matter when the next Xbox releases (if there is one), with Phil in charge don't expect anything more than we've seen with the Xbox One and Series - a very mild reception.

I find this generation quite bizarre. We are already getting rumours of a close release for this "Pro" model.
But true "current-gen" titles are still a small percentage of the market, I believe we have maybe 30 of them at this point if we are really generous with half of a dozen "current-gen" DLC for some reason. And the cherry on top is that the MSRP of both consoles has actually gone up.

Like, I fully understand that technically there is room to improve the hardware. The PS5 in question is akin to a slightly beefed-up entry-level gaming computer and AMD has made progress with RT in their newer hardware. But contrary to the PS4/XOne the current-gen hardware is actually quite capable and I don't feel we have seen enough of it to really justify the need for a mid-gen upgrade.

And honestly, it's even a bit scary. Because we are already seeing developers using things like upscalers as a crutch, to the point of the recently extremely successful game running at 720p native. So just imagine if those same devs were actually targeting hardware that is a tad more powerful. That would simply spell doom for the owners of the base consoles.

Bangarang Rufio. Games aren't even tapping I to what the PS5 is using yet, Sony is still pushing for PS4 development parity, obviously, because the pandemic crippled PS5 sales plus the scalping issue that made it even worse for consumers to get a console. Now Sony's suffering as a result and scalpers are now trying to get rid of their stock, most likely at a loss of some kind.

His point is, they're not even really fully utilizing the PS5 as is, unless it really is only a small upgrade over the PS4, then WHAT THE HELL SONY!?! But why are we getting a mid-gen refresh when they havent even tapped into the potential of the PS5? So, we're just gonna skip over the PS5 and go right to Pro?

anast698d ago

The PS5 is way better than an entry level gaming computer. An entry level computer will run some things on a mix of medium and low a settings, it won't run any current titles on high setting or even close to 4k.

People keep saying there is this entry level cheap PC builds that will run just like a PS5. But I still haven't found one under $1,500, which is not slightly above entry level. If you have a build that I can get for around 500 that run games in 4k, then I will jump on it.

RedDevils697d ago

It's usually based on people who already own a decent PC and are looking to upgrade their GPU. However, this often leads to upgrading the motherboard and adding some RAM, which can easily cost over $1k. lol

FinalFantasyFanatic697d ago

I think this gen is bizarre because of the Covid, they really messed up things for everyone, so I personally expect this to be a longer generation, it really feels like it hasn't started with very few games being released that are only possible on a PS5/Series X.

I would make game devs lives harder because of Series S if this were to happen they would have 3 Series consoles but the weakest link would hold development back even more. Unlike the PS5 it doesnt have a less powerful version

shadowT698d ago

Xbox Series S is a bottleneck, they are maybe not able to release a Xbox Series mid-gen refresh without giving-up feature parity...

Chronicles of the Wolf Review [Capsule Computers]

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:

"There is a reason that the Castlevania franchise is so beloved and even is seen as part of what started the whole metroidvania genre, given that half of the franchise’s name makes up the genre of course. These titles see players explore vast, generally 2D limited locations where players will battle against all different manner of foes, unlocking new powers and weapons along the way that will help them gain access to previously unreachable areas or breach a barrier blocking their way. Throughout the years, these metroidvanias have each added their own unique takes and quality of life features to try to set themselves apart and make a mark of their own, but how about one that sticks almost as close to the original Castlevania as possible?

Chronicles of the Wolf happens to be just that as Migami Games has made sure to stick as close as possible to the original Castlevania elements for better or worse while putting their own lore on things. Does this retro approach that adheres heavily to the old-school formula work out well for this one or was this hero’s adventure better left for the wolves?"
