10 Best Video Game Magazines That No Longer Exist

Before the days of internet coverage, gamers turned to magazines like Computer Gaming World and Nintendo Power for all their gaming info.

Nintendo Power! I remember getting a free copy of Dragon Warrior with my 1yr subscription. Paid for itself. 😎

Mean Machines
Arcadia
Neo Geo Freak
There was also an excellent UK mag that kind of rivalled Edge and also covered arcade games but I can't remember what it was called.

Nothing came close to Mean Machines for me!

Yeah, Mean Machines! Such an awesome point in time, before some of those consoles had even been released in the UK, and some, like Turbo Grafx never would, but you could read about them in Mean Machines and dream about what it would be like to own one!

I still have many Mean Machines from those days (as well as C&VG and EGM), and I enjoyed them then and I still enjoy them now, but they were far from professional, and page-design was absolutely terrible back then.

I know we all look through our thick nostalgia-glasses and we absolutely loved these magazines back then for what they offered us, which was news & reviews of the exciting world of our favorite hobby, and of course there were far more limitations in terms of page-design (I think they would have used an early version of Quark) than we have nowadays (Adobe InDesign, complimented by Illustrator and Photoshop), but even basic stuff with lining up texts and having a sensible lay-out when it came to images, really was a mess back then in many of those magazines.

In many ways, they were glorified fanzines, which was also understandable considering the age of many involved in making those issues, who probably learned the tricks of the trade along the way.

Yeah, I kept all of mine but then probably got pressure from my parents to bin them, which I probably did.

Would love to flick through a few copies now.

GamePro was always my favorite, along with Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Gamefan was great. I used to buy all my imports from the parent company "Die Hard" out of SoCal.
