Switch Outsells PS5 as Zelda Boosts Sales - Europe Hardware Estimates for May 2023

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Europe with 371,758 units sold for May 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch has now sold an estimated 32.30 million units lifetime in Europe.

The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 333,075 units to bring its lifetime sales to 11.68 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 120,155 units to bring their lifetime sales to 5.98 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 3,272 units to bring its lifetime sales to 45.84 million units.

Or perhaps maybe they’re using totk to give the switch one last big sales push and will also be rereleasing it on their next console that will launch in 2024. Thats my bet anyway.

Calm down. They were just ahead of the more expensive PS5 with less than 40k units WITH their fastest selling game in their entire history. Even Nintendo knows it's time. The Switch's sales has peaked and on a decline. Oct and Nov with Spidey 2 will be a massacre in terms of sales difference in favor of the PS5.

For what it's worth, the Switch has stayed strong sales-wise for way longer than it should've - huge thanks to covid. We will see the sucessor sooner rather than later imo. At this rate, maybe an announcement around the holidays for next year's launch is not too far fetched.

Sales of Sony exclusive always bubble up in the charts compared to typical releases that have a strong three week opening and then die. Sony's are similar to albeit no where near the level of Nintendo's 1st party interns of on-going sales across many months.

When Sony gets its Cinema film and TV-tie-ins sorted out, everyone.a new season or a new film drops, the Ps5 games will see a small bump up the charts again.

I believe this is their plan.

People talk alot bout' their downfall with online multiplayer game model but forget totally Sony knows what their doing and keeping cards close to chest no one really can make an accurate assessment as only Sony execs know the roadmap for the next 5 years and the rest of us just take wild guesses.

With the last playstation showcase it didn't do anything to make people go out and want a ps5 so I am not surprised switch outsold it

Zelda totk is a good sequel, they managed to keep that refreshing Zelda charm, honestly it's something how Nintendo got what it takes to keep their franchises feeling fresh, I really have been on it since I got it last month lol, still playing Hogwarts legacy, looking forward to spiderman PS5, I want to try star wars jedi survivor, the new assassin's creed looking good to, those are 5 actual good games this year I wish we had more it be so scarce nowadays

If we're keeping it a buck, how many remasters and remakes are hitting PlayStation? You're right, people love it, and that's one incentive. I don't see much real innovation from the green team either since their most successful titles feel very familiar, but again, as you mention, people love it.

Tears of the Kingdom feels very familiar, but there's enough that's new for it to feel like a proper sequel in my opinion. If we're talking about Nintendo on remakes and remasters though, I have just a tad more lenience there since many of those titles were on Wii U and people missed them. Otherwise, fair enough on the critiques.

Yeah of course it did because Zelda just dropped. The more alarming thing is PS5 outselling the XSX/XSS still by a 3:1 margin. That is just crazy.

I think I have the opposite impression:

PS5 doing well is a no brainer. Great hardware, great games, and it became widely available not long ago. We were dealing with extreme scalping , but the supply issues have abated.

To me, what impressive is that the goddamn Switch is still selling. I'm feeling pretty sure there are quite a few replacement and second units in there where people waited for the new Zelda to drop to buy it... But mate... It's still selling. It's beating the competition. Zelda or not, I feel like they've got everyone who was getable—this is a sequel to a game that's been on Switch already; chances are, you would have bought one already for Breath of the Wild. Come to find out it can STILL outsell competition on a given month. This console is ancient at this point and RELEASED with outdated hardware and the Steam Deck exists.

I don't know, mate. This thing has the longest legs I've seen in recent memory.

Yeah I’m one of those households that contributed to multiple sales. I’ve bought three Switches for each of my kids over the years. Keeps them off my PS5 :D

My youngest asked me to pick up TOTK for him. I’m about to do it soon too because lately he’s been trying to take over my PS5 again. Nope, not when FFXVI about to drop mister. Begone!

I disagree. Like I mentioned, waiting for Zelda doesn't seem likely since there was already Breath of the Wild. Just seems like anyone who wanted one has one at this point.

On market size, I don't really agree there either. Console, PC, and handheld markets are not mutually exclusive and we actually see that the dedicated handheld market has likely contracted: 3DS did half as well as DS and Vita vastly underperformed compared to PSP.

Unfortunately, nintendo fans are voting with there wallet, it's very doubtfull that what Nintendo does next hardware wise will be anything impressive or a substantial upgrade over switch. You only have yourselves to blame.

What is impressive is that the ps5 sold almost the same as the switch with Zelda! Microsoft is so far behind that is scary.
