"blasphemous option of ‘Modern’ controls, which ditches the six-button system, lets you toss out special moves at the touch of a button as well as execute auto-combos."

lol I thought this was a demo thing , I actually can believed they went ahead with this mode, never liked the one button special in other fighting games I feel it kills the joyment of pulling a combo, you still can go back to six right?, even so you can go back to six the damage is done, they just turned SF from being original to average or just another fighting game, also by adding this it just kills also the joyment of mastering each character imo, setiously why even bother, just mash the buttons.

You must not have paid attention then, since the modern controls were one of the features announced very early on. Capcom understands that Street Fighter 5's major flaw was that it was unappealing to casual fighting game players. They've gone above and beyond to rectify that issue with SF6 by making it very accessible and offering a ton of single player content.

Whether you like it or not, for a fighting game community to thrive you can't rely on your hardcore players alone. You need a way to bring new people in. Modern controls are a good way to start learning some of the fundamentals without being overwhelmed by execution. Obviously there is a risk in allowing for simplified controls, but when it's balanced correctly, skilled players will still have the advantage on the traditional control scheme, because they just have more options available to them.

Uh, this is kind of exactly how they've thrived for decades lmao.

The high skill barrier is exactly what is appealing about it to prospective new players. No "casual" game players are going to become fighting game fans regardless. And tons of recent, failed attempts at capturing them has proven this.

@Nebaku
I don't even agree with the claim that the FGC has thrived for decades, let alone that it thrived for decades because of fighting games having a high skill barrier. To skilled players a high skill ceiling is certainly appealing, but that's very different from a high skill barrier.

Easy to learn, hard to master has generally been considered ideal for fighting games as long as I can think and while I personally love games like SF4 and Blazblue, dealing with advanced mechanics and 1 frame links for example will discourage many newcomers. People aren't born as fighting game fans. Everone had to have been introduced to them at some point and depending on that introduction, people will either stay and learn, or bounce and decide that the genre is not for them.

That's the thing though, the average gamer doesn't want to spend hours in the lab learning combos and practicing their execution, they just want to mash buttons and have fun.

Abear21329d ago

I agree but Virtua Fighter and old SF games used too buttons for short cuts of pressing two buttons at once and for some grabs that normally require more presses too.

You're not beating anyone with that easy mode stuff. There's a clear, predictable outline to your strategies and you'd be eaten alive online.

It's fine as a point of entry

Angyobangyo329d ago

bruh! classic controls are still there. Someone isn't listening. Why are you so salty how people choose to play a game? Feel free to stick to the old school control method, no one is telling you otherwise, not attacking you for it. I don't get why people like you have to gate-keep a pretty great accessibility feature. Having an easier entry barrier helps a community grow.

Yea it seems the singleplayer is a bit underwhelming. But generally, people seem to be loving the game so that's great.

spicelicka329d ago

Did previous Street fighter games have great single player campaign? According to the article itself it's bolted onto the side. If it's an additional mode that's basically a bonus and as long as it doesn't take away from the main experience I don't see why that's a problem.

Terry_B329d ago

Yup, the single player /world tour mode sucks.

SullysCigar329d ago

I honestly haven't tried it to form an opinion, but this website also gave Redfall NINE out of ten, calling it "FANTASTIC" and gave TLOU part 1 TWO out of ten.

Decide for yourself whether this might be clickbait lol

DO NOT CLICK, FOLKS!

andy85329d ago

Did they? That's hilarious 😂

Terry_B329d ago

heh..In that case I have to agree and upvote you :) But its just the truth..the SF6 single player mode ..SUCKS!

rippermcrip329d ago

2 out of 10? Did they change it or have multiple?

SullysCigar328d ago

^ Yeah, they had multiple. They gave 2/10 to the PC version which had technical issues at launch.

Kind of expected this really, if you want a really good single player experience fighting game, wait for Mortal Kombat. SF6 delivers where it counts though, the gameplay is amazing, best SF game I've played since Alpha 3.

Hofstaderman329d ago

I like the premise of World Tour, almost like Capcom's take on Yakuza lol. But then again I'm a RPG nut.
