Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Congratulates Sony On 'Nice' PlayStation Showcase

"It's fun to get to see what's to come"

OtterX14d ago

Phil Spencer - "You guys for sale?"

VenomUK14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

‘Nice’?! Talk about damning with faint praise the cheeky fucker - I like his style! After watching the PlayStation Showcase he must’ve been punching the air with joy as he lives to fight another day.

GhostScholar14d ago

It was a win for Xbox only if they can finally show some of the games from first party. I don’t expect Sony to ever miss fire like this again. I’m very excited to see how this plays out.

DarkZane14d ago

It would be a win for Xbox ... except it isn't because we all know their showcase on June 1st will be trash.

thesoftware73014d ago

You guys are really over the top and find a way to throw fanboy wars into everything.

Why can't he just mean, he know how difficult it is to put on a good show?

Stop reading into your own mental creations and manifesting them online..it almost seems like paranoia.

Jin_Sakai14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@DarkZane

“It would be a win for Xbox ... except it isn't because we all know their showcase on June 1st will be trash.“

Xbox showcase is in June the 11th not the 1st. And it would have to be a complete flop to be any worse than the PlayStation showcase.

DarkZane14d ago

@Jin_Sakai

"Xbox showcase is in June the 11th not the 1st. And it would have to be a complete flop to be any worse than the PlayStation showcase."

If there is one thing Xbox knows how to deliver properly, it's flops.

1Victor14d ago

@ghost did they miss fire tho when there’s no rush to show their strongest hand from the mayor studios, no teaser from ND or guerrilla just a few rpg a few 3rd party games some exclusives others not and a few vr games, to me it reek of obscure observer from the shadows waiting to see what the competition does, I guarantee you IF ABK goes through there’s going to be a lot of games shown and more exclusives

anast13d ago

Sony's showing was better than anything MS has had to offer in 2 decades. He's calling GG.

Phil being Phil.

Always the nice guy.

fr0sty14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I mean, he couldn't trash it... at least they had games to show, and they didn't come out saying that "making good games isn't the key to selling game systems".

gleepot14d ago

why would he trash them for them announcing all the multiplatform games that are also coming to their console

fr0sty14d ago

That's kinda what "multiplatform" means...

And while Sony may have been light on exclusive announcements this go around, at least the ones they did announce have a track record of being great games, and at least they didn't have to spend billions buying entire publishers to make them. In fact, the developers they did buy they're still allowing to release games on other platforms.

Lightning Mr Bubbles14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Reading some of these comments, I think people over exaggerate. Even if Sony would of had an amazing showcase, Xbox still wouldn't be dead or anything like that. These showcases rarely make or break anyone.

In my personal opinion, even though I'm a Playstation fan, I thought that was a weak showcase. There were just so many more games they could of shown. I was expecting more on Silent Hill 2 remake, Stellar Blade, Eternights, and the Last of Us multiplayer project.

Either way, Playstation 5 still has great games coming out this year like FF16 and Spider Man 2, and I'm sure the console will continue strong sales.

Lifexline14d ago

He genuinely is a nice guy from all accounts.

But that was a horrible showing for Sony I do wonder if they are withholding things because of the activision deal Or maybe development of games is really taking that much longer to develop so gamers shouldn’t expect games from franchises as frequently as they use to come out. But gamers can be irrational.

Extermin8or3_14d ago

I suspect its the ms vs ftc court case. MS already tried to use sonys exclusives as an argument its let them acquire activision its a ridiculous argument but I guess Sony would rather not risk adding that argument. I wonder if, if the eu had blocked it they'd have done a different showcase but with the eu allowing it meaning there is still a chance it gets through...

anast13d ago

Sure he might be a "nice guy", if that means taking advantage of every person possible to make to most money possible.

Jin_Sakai14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@Obscure_Observer

“Phil being Phil.”

“Always the nice guy.”

Phil’s saying thank you for the abysmal showcase so they don’t have to sweat anymore.

Hofstaderman14d ago

At least not sweat as much.

crazyCoconuts14d ago

Put your phone down, Phil. You have work to do.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

"Put your phone down, Phil. You have work to do."

After the last showcase, I think Hurst is the one who has a lot of work to do.

Christopher14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

You're saying this after the last year of Xbox showings?

Let's be realistic, both sides have a lot of work to do. The problem is both sides are getting lazy. The problem for Xbox is that Sony hasn't been as lazy until this showcase. And even then, we do know they have big games coming this year, more than the competition.

So, let's not act like either side isn't in need of work to earn our money.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

@Christopher

"Let's be realistic, both sides have a lot of work to do. The problem is both sides are getting lazy."

Not side is getting lazy in my opinion. Drought season in gaming regarding first party games is pretty common and it happens in every single generation with every single publisher and this one won´t be an exception. Its been happening with Xbox since 2022 and it´s *apparently* will be the case with the PS5 from this year till 2025 or so.

June 11 will be critical for Xbox since unlike Sony they´d had a slow start as the new studios need more time to deliver its new games.

That said, I was expecting Sony to blow me away with true next gen games announcements and they´d blow it! I´m expecting the exact same for Xbox in June 11, so if they fail to deliver yet again, don´t expect me to sugar coat their bs neither.

I´m tired of waiting for this current console generation finally start to deliver true next gen games. I´ve been very patient with Xbox due it´s new/recent acquired/created studios as it needs time to deliver games in a decent non broken state.

It´s almost 5 years and Xbox is running out of time so MS better not disappoint next month or there´ll be hell to pay.

MIDGETonSTILTS1714d ago

Sony was very, very upfront with the decrease in trailers and showcases.

Trailers and reveals delay releases by 6 months, 6 months they cannot afford when games take 5 years on avg to develop.

Sony wants their trust to pay off so that they can release games faster.

Xbox is the one I don’t trust. After Crackdown 3, Scaleblund, Redfall, Halo Infinite, Fable being MIA forever, and they are trying to buy CoD to cover their asses when their current promises fall flat, again.

Xbox has a lot to prove, Sony doesn’t.

Be patient. Games are coming, they always come.

BehindTheRows14d ago

Like I said, pure comedy!

You really want to go there after the last game that released exclusively on your prized possession? You really want to go there? When Spider-Man 2 is running laps around the games that release on Xbox this year, I want you to revisit this garbage.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

@Chistopher,
I more or less agree, both sides do need to do more work, Sony's offerings this gen haven't really enticed me to fork over the cash for a PS5 yet. I need more exclusives and PS classic games to want to invest in their console. Xbox is basically no hope for me, and the Switch I keep around because they always deliver some exclusive games worth buying most years.

Christopher14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Nice guy Phil, but the Xbox account goes hard on making sure you know what games aren't PS Exclusive. Phil is just a poster boy for the company, but the company takes every advantage, and not in nice ways, to undercut the competition's showings. Remember the Destiny cologne ads because they didn't have the right to advertise the game itself?

This has always been my problem with Microsoft as a whole. They act the nice guy, but they are one of the nastiest companies out there and they play dirty as heck. The only company I can think is better at playing dirty than them is Disney.

SullysCigar14d ago

I couldn't agree more. And I hate that, because I want to be impartial, but Microsoft make it so darned difficult for me to want to put my money their way, due to their constant grubby antics.

Xbox needs new leadership, a new strategic agenda and to overhaul their core internal values. Desperately. So does their parent company, in my opinion.

XiNatsuDragnel14d ago

This is so true in my opinion at least Sony is honest about their intentions imo.

Tacoboto14d ago

Sony believed in generations then every title shown off except for two at that event were PS4 cross gen games.

Remember how they announced Horizon as a game getting a free upgrade, then they tried to walk back that promise since they delayed it out of the launch window? Then they made the upgrade free but still sold the PS5 SKU at $70?

Now Sony is going to sell you a dedicated streaming device as if they aren't already selling PlayStation branded mobile controllers for your phone that already does remote play!

Both are corporations. Microsoft is desperate and Sony knows it's the cool cat on the block. That was not a good look for Sony in the PS3 era, and Microsoft's thirst to win with the 360 is replaced by desperation with the Series. Both are too far gone to be honest with their consumers anymore.

potatoseal14d ago

The tweet kind of reeks of Greenberg snark. He is my most disliked from MS. Just a shit talker and exaggerator. If the character 2-face was in gaming, one side would be Phil and other side would be Greenburgers lol

Obscure_Observer14d ago

"The tweet kind of reeks of Greenberg snark. He is my most disliked from MS."

It´s definitely him! And I agree with you, that guy is awful!

Obscure_Observer14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@Christopher

"Nice guy Phil, but the Xbox account goes hard on making sure you know what games aren't PS Exclusive."

As they should, since some people are spreading FUD bs over the internet by saying that port games to Xbox is not worth it, because it don´t sell on Xbox. Just a reality check for stupid people.

"They act the nice guy, but they are one of the nastiest companies out there and they play dirty as heck."

Reminds me of Shu Yoshida and Adam Boyles ad on how you share games on PS4. Or House when he said Xbox were not competition, instead, it was the PC or even most recently Ryan itself when he said Gamepass wasn´t sustainable/profitable model.

Those companies will take advantage of any moment to take cheap shot at each other when they´re "down". And gamers like yourself and me, will take it to the heart, for one side or another.

It just work - Todd Howard

@SullysCigar

"I want to be impartial, but Microsoft make it so darned difficult for me to want to put my money their way, due to their constant grubby antics."

What a rubbish. You were all doom and gloom for just a few weeks ago over Redfall´s fiasco. If Xbox is really done as you try to make up, you shouldn´t be bothered by their PR stunts.

"Xbox needs new leadership, a new strategic agenda and to overhaul their core internal values. Desperately. So does their parent company, in my opinion."

So you better make peace with your God and pray for that ABK deal to fail, otherwise, the day you will see Phil leaving Xbox, will be the day of his retirement.

Christopher14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

***Reminds me of Shu Yoshida and Adam Boyles ad on how you share games on PS4.***

Hated that. Microsoft dug a big enough hole for itself.

*** Or House when he said Xbox were not competition, instead, it was the PC***

Hey, uh, you might have gotten that mixed up: https://www.pushsquare.com/...

But you're trying to take this to mean the same thing: https://www.xfire.com/sony-...

-Foxtrot14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

"Nice guy Phil, but the Xbox account goes hard on making sure you know what games aren't PS Exclusive"

Lmao. I've literally just thought the same thing

The Xbox account is constantly looking out for things they can take digs at Sony and then you have Greenberg who's a master of fuelling the fanboy flames.

"and they play dirty as heck"

Remember that "Xbox Loves You" boat crashing a PS3 European launch party in 2007 when Sony was at a low

rlow114d ago

You guys have very short memories.

https://gamerant.com/sony-y...

There have been many times in the past that Sonys took jabs at Xbox flubs. I don’t get how Sony becomes a victim everytime Xbox says anything remotely bad about them or takes some jabs at them. It’s called competition and Sony has taken plenty of jabs at their competitors through the years. Hell, I can go back to the mid to late 90s on the Crash Bandicoot commercial they did in front of Nintendo headquarters heckling them. So if you want to stick with Sony is somehow the victim, I think you need to do a little fact checking on their history. Theirs plenty of it.

Plus, how is telling your fanbase that these games are coming to their system as well , a disservice to Sony? Honestly, that’s like telling two stores selling the same product that only one can say they have it. Is the other competitor just supposed to sit back and let customers have that impression. I don’t know what planet you all live on. But logic and competition isn’t one of them.

Christopher13d ago

1. I also complained about that.
2. You had to go all the way back to the beginning of the last generation to find that, I can find instances each year at the least for Microsoft.

Honestly can't tell if this is genuine or a sarcastic dig, especially given what the xbox twitter tweeted out lol.

darthv7214d ago

Phil is usually pretty genuine. Its the others you have to wonder about (Greenburg, Major Nelson, etc)

Outside_ofthe_Box14d ago

Don't think genuine is the right word. He's just saying what will win him the most points at the given moment whether he actually believes it or not or if it's the truth or not.

Christopher14d ago

Ah! Why'd you have to bring up Greenburg!?! His name should be wiped from all talk of Xbox, IMHO. The world would be a much better place.

potatoseal14d ago

I dislike Greenburgers more than anyone at MS

purple10114d ago

Was that the "coming to Xbox" one?

That showed 12 of the games in the ps showcase are also on Xbox.

If not please link. Im genuinely interested

darthv7214d ago

Yes, it was the 12 games Sony showed that MS now doesnt have to give time to for their showcase.
