I disagree with the idea that Nintendo can't charge $70 for their games. Their costs have gone up just as much as everyone else's. And on top of that they are using the higher capacity cards for Zelda and now Mortal Kombat which along with the Witcher 3 only makes those three titles as far as I know of. So just naturally, you would expect costs to go up. Game costs went up because the cost to make them has increased. Its not greed and its not a next gen tax. Can we take a moment and thank WB for paying for the higher capacity cards.
Imagine you live in a world where the cost of living and inflation rise but you are not allowed to make any more money than 10 years ago because some fanboys don't understand that your costs have increased like theirs. You are basically saying that you DO NOT support the industry and you DO NOT support developers. You just want. You just demand.
Don't take any of this personally, I am not talking about you (@Crimson). I want to give you an example of how it looks from a developer/publisher perspective when people silo themselves off into polar arguments.
People talk about wanting to support the devs, but the reality is that most of them actually don't want to support the devs. Or more accurately, they want other people to support the devs.
Can you show me? I only ask because I see one game cost $70 for console and the same game cost $60 on PC. I remember seeing the last-gen version of the same game $60. So, I assume it’s a last-gen vs. next-gen development thing, but then you have a heavily Last-gen system picking and choosing one of its most popular games to be $70 while everything else is $60. So, Zelda was the first game they developed where the cost was greater? Then you have publishers like Sega saying they’re keeping an eye on the market to see if they can raise just their AAA games to $70.
“In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year," Sega said in a newly translated transcript of the company's April earnings (via VGC). "We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions."
How much from the price hike goes back to the developers? I keep hearing “people don’t want to support the developers,” and people can f*ck right off with that. When is it ok to show displeasure in raising the prices of a game, when they’re $100 or $200 for a standard edition? You want to support the devs? Buy copious amounts of microtransactions then. People are massively full of sh*t when they use the “support the devs” argument.
The publishers are the ones who pay the devs and guess what? They make more than 90% of the people on here using that defense. Hollywood is sinking and pay their actors multi-millions and more than the movies are actually pulling in, what should they do, raise ticket prices to $50 and blu-rays to $100?
It’s already reported that this $70 price hike has actually lowered overall sales of games:
“In total, 264.2 million PlayStation games, both digital and physical, were sold in 2022, which is a drop of 39 million from the previous year. It’s speculated that the reason for this drop is the price increase for the latest PS5 games.”
So, I guess if game sales slump, they’re going to have to raise them even higher to help “support the devs”. How much from the game sales go to the dev? Because my understanding is the publisher already paid the devs and marketing, the sales go back to the publisher and recoup costs and generate profit.
To me, since there’s no real regulation on what a game price has to be, this seems like an industry testing waters to see what they can get away with.
Keep in mind back when manufacturing cartridges was “expensive” Nintendo 64 games were $80 a pop. I “supported” the devs, but soon they lowered the prices to $49.99 to compete with PS1 games being from $39.99 to $49.99.
I love the whole argument of “support the devs”, but don’t “support the devs” when it comes to microtransactions, loot boxes, season passes, battle passes, or any other way to get you to “support the devs”.
What I want to know, as a consumer, when are we allowed to show displeasure in a price hike that literally feels like an industry is testing the waters and has literally nothing to do with “development cost”, in my opinion. These publishers make more money than the film industry and I want to know the exact cost of a next-gen developed game and then compare how a $60 game can’t pay the devs near a $70 game.
A dear friend just gifted me an Oled Switch. I guess I'll be using it on my travels this summer to play some exclusives that have captured my interest. On another note, I will be buying the new MK to play on my PS5.
Bayonetta 1+2, Metroid Dread and SMTV are my switch suggestions.
The digital foundry comparison video will be entertaining. I can't imagine someone buying the switch version over other systems if they have the option...
Exactly. I own all 3 (PS5,XBSX,Switch) & my PS5 is my go-to console to play most games & the new MK just makes sense to play on the latest home consoles. I would have never bought a Switch but my bestie has one so she gifted one to me because I'm going to be traveling this summer. Playing Bayonetta 2 & 3 is definitely on my list. Metroid Dread looks fun too. I hope I get some use out of the Switch because there aren't a lot of Switch exclusives that interest me, my very reason I didn't buy one but my friend just had to get me one...lol.
Here's my list of suggestions since I only play on a Switch OLED..

70$ + inflation and same salaries.... Guess most people will get back to pirating games in Africa and Asia and soth America.... At least in my coutry people got affected by the price hick for food and transpo.... And lot of them dont wanna pay for GP even and now pirating games... Its sad that legal gaming is becoming more luxurious
Maybe you should be demanding a higher salary as that seems to be the cause of your pain. If costs go up then of course game prices will go up too. Inflation is exacerbated when salaries don't go up in kind. Why do you think game prices are going up? Because they cost more money to make. And its not just games its everything else. Games are a luxury but how do you expect to pay for all of the other rising costs if salaries don't go up?
Yeah in africa you can demand a higher salary... But they wouldn't give it, you leave the job another person eager to work replaces you, everyone here knows 3 languages and have a bachelor and seeking job you can get replaced in a blink
@Eonjay Why it goes up? Because it takes more money to make...
Thats the biggest lie i heard even on 60$ studios and publishers made record Revenues we are talking hundred of millions, they got expensive because companies are capitalist and always seek higher revenue and as consumers we have to push back! But gaming community are devided and lot of them are underage that their fathers buy them games and get paid by dollars/eurs they aren't growup enough to understand that those companies are using them and will do anything to make more money and dont think about poor-average gamers not only that but i noticed all new generation of gamers are rich or pretending to be rich
Poeple like you sir are the reason, money needed to develop is up YES but gaming community is much much bigger than ever and also DLCs micros and season passes are highly profitable comparing to old days
In verdict those companies makes crazy money and you can go back to before the 70$ raise figures the gaming industry make sooo much than all other entertainment gathered.
But Gaming community will always be under the foot because of some soft poeple accepting anything those coorpo throw at them,
So yes everyone will do what they most, companies does there thing, and the poor does his thing
Sure. Let's also make sure we get pay raises on our jobs like we are supposed to. Damn "inflation" bs is getting out of control and companies know for sure how to take advantage of the whole situation.
This is the first cross gen $70 game I believe? What reason do Nintendo (with by far the worst version of it) have to charge that. Even the PS5 version isn't
So much for the ‘Nintendo is only charging $70 for the Zelda TOTK game because it’s packed with content and won’t have DLC’ argument.
Because we know the $70 for MK will only get you the base-game, and probably the worst version of that game across all systems. On top of that there WILL be DLC, and it will be expensive as well.
Nintendo is charging $70 because they feel they can get away with it. Perhaps they can.
This game isn't made by Nintendo, why would you assume they're in control of the pricing? It's a 3rd party game, Nintendo gets a % of the sale. They can't just choose to slap $10 extra on someone else's game, it doesn't work like that.
Pass
Nintendo wants in on the next-gen tax
And it's being made with the help of the Witcher 3 port team too, so this certainly isn't a cloud game.
I'm interested in how this will turn out. Wonder if they moved on from UE3 by now too (which MK11 was on)
A dear friend just gifted me an Oled Switch. I guess I'll be using it on my travels this summer to play some exclusives that have captured my interest. On another note, I will be buying the new MK to play on my PS5.
Just accept it already, $70 will be the normal price. In the next 10-15 years, get ready for the $80 game price.
