Insomniac games confirms Spider-Man 2 won't have any co-op or multiplayer elements

It is an epic single-player adventure!

blackblades734d ago (Edited 734d ago )

Coop wouldve been nice for the people that has friends or family.

darthv72734d ago

Honestly, it would have been pretty cool to team up with my son. His favorite movie is no way home and it would have been cool to take on a boss or two together.

neutralgamer1992734d ago (Edited 734d ago )

Give us great SP games now and maybe they can add co-op via a match down the road. Every game and developer has resources and I rather they focus on SP at launch

Halo Infinite had almost 500 in budget yet still it was missing long time halo features. Game development is very complicated

zaanan733d ago

Insomniac in 2006: Resistance is our first realistic game, and it’s a PS3 launch title, but we have also included co-op!
Insomniac in 2023: Spider-man is a great family IP, PS5 is easier to develop for and way more capable, but fuck co- op!

MONOLITHICIDE733d ago

$120 a year and no multiplayer games. No Mag No Warhawk No Socom No Resistance No Killzone No Twisted Metal No Home 2.0 No New No nothing.

FunAndGun733d ago

@Mono Thanks for bringing up Warhawk. Now I need a good cry in memory of that amazing gaming experience that I miss.

Unknown_Gamer5794733d ago

Maybe, but I can respect a game that’s focused on what it wants to be rather than getting bogged down with trying to please everyone. There are plenty of other great co-op games if that’s what you’re looking for. Insomniac clearly wants to focus on creating the best singleplayer experience possible.

blackblades733d ago (Edited 733d ago )

People I said it wouldve been nice for people that wanna play with friends and family. Which I don't play with either of them and I never wish for it either. Also they can make the game single player and when done could add it or add it later.

What's that sound effect is that again

-Foxtrot734d ago

Phew as in "Thank f****** God"

blackblades734d ago

That's the wiping off the sweat from the forhead gotcha.

masterfox734d ago

freaking awesome!!!, developers will focus in a strong single player experience the way it should be.

Jin_Sakai734d ago

Oh give it a rest. You shouldn’t have to choose one or the other. Both can coexist.

masterfox734d ago

you have no honor Jin Sakai san!

badz149734d ago

"choice" as in other coop games to play. not all games should have coop or online mp, PERIOD!

JEECE734d ago

But remember how multiplayer ruined Ghost of Tsushima when they added it? The single player was never the same after they added multiplayer.

LucasRuinedChildhood734d ago (Edited 734d ago )

We've seen co-op negatively affect games so many times ... Dead Space 3, Redfall, Gotham Knights, Anthem, F.E.A.R 3, Avengers and probably Suicide Squad.

It's not well suited to all games. Realistically, it creates limitations for the design. The trade-off has to be worth it.

If one player is Peter and one is Miles ... would Peter and Miles always have to be in the same room for the slower moments like walking around F.E.A.S.T? That limits the story. It creates all sorts of problems.

Maybe sometimes you're not supposed to play as one of them for a while. Maybe Miles gets injured and Peter wants revenge while wearing the black suit. Or Peter gets injured or captured by Venom. Co-op says "Nah, can't do that."

Co-op is perfectly suited to looter shooters, but ... a narrative-focused open world game? It'll most likely end up being dumbed down or simplified in some way to fit co-op into it.

DarXyde734d ago

Likewise, games can stand alone without a single player (Titanfall) or multiplayer (Spiderman).

Of course they can coexist. I don't think it was even implied that they couldn't. Sufficient, but wholly unnecessary. All that would do is prolong development (thereby increasing cost). Insomniac has a stellar track record for single player titles, and I trust their judgment in its exclusion.

Both in theory are good to have, but I don't mind choosing one over the other if the experience is solid either.

SeTTriP733d ago

But at what cost is the concern.

ModsDoBetter733d ago

Agreed. This title could’ve had co-op without compromise. It’s not difficult to implement it without messing up a la Gotham Knights.

Coop wouldn´t hurt the single player experience a bit if it had drop in drop out option.

Those gamers which have families would benefit the most, since Spider-Man is the most popular super-hero among kids and... pretty much everybody.

Maybe in the next one.

jznrpg734d ago

Maybe they thought it would .
It definitely takes more time and production all around.

Obscure_Observer734d ago

"It definitely takes more time and production all around."

That´s true. The game is going to be released faster as it is. Maybe Marvel has its own deadlines to met.

-Foxtrot734d ago

Again we continue to live in this fantasy land where people think co-op is the developers pressing a few buttons and going "Ta-Dah...Co-op"

It's not an easy thing to implement and I'd rather see the resources used to make the best single player game they can.

CS7734d ago

Also it limits the story.

What if something happens to miles during the story, what happens to coop then?

Profchaos734d ago

Exactly co op needs to be planned for and developed from the get go otherwise you end up with a game where player 2 is basically player 1's pet playing follow the leader all the main actions are completed by P1 and P2 might attack a few enemies here and there.

Recent example was I played Kirby and the forgotten world in co op and the player 2 experience was miserable and boring.

Unless it's a shooter co op needs to be a forethought

-Foxtrot734d ago

@CS7

BOOM...there's another great point

Remember Halo 5 when rather than drop in / drop out co-op with an random spartan they made it so any players would be playing Blue Team. Single player you are stuck with shitty AI companions and it meant they were completely restricted with the story, if something happens to one character then it's got to happen to all of them.

Resident Evil 5 is a great co-op game but playing it single player is just miserable, the AI is bad, it's not scary, the game is littered with "work together, you pull this chain and I'll go over here and pull this one" which meant they couldn't even have an optional "No Partner" mode as the game just wouldn't work.

Redfall by a developer who are known for their single player driven games, look how that turned out.

It's a headache and it's sad that there's still people to this day, despite seeing how incompetent Bethesda is at making a single player game without bugs, say they want co-op in a huge complex world like Elder Scrolls for Elder Scrolls VI.

Nobody thinks of the consequences, if anything people should be championing for games like It Takes Two which were built up as co-op only games.

MontyeKristo732d ago

@CS7 - Not necessarily. If Insomniac wanted to create the game as a co-op experience, then they would create a story that works for playing co-op. It's not simply "Okay, here's the story - now make it co-op." It wouldn't make sense to create a co-op experience where they completely separate the characters - not usually, anyway.

But, even if they did, like someone said above "Venom captures Spiderman," they could do something like the Miles player continues to be played normally but the Spiderman player is controlling a spider bot helping lead Miles to his location and spotting enemies. Or Miles gets hurt but you play as Spiderman and Mary Jane.. they could make it work if they intended to.

I'm okay with it being single player; however, if they made co-op missions later (unrelated to the main story) that would be really cool. Whether it's "fight this boss together" or "how many waves of enemies can you survive" or "race from point A to point B." There's plenty of options, even a completely different side story, they could craft to please the co-op crowd..

Yes, I'm sure drop in/drop out co-op is super easy to implement. Even easier if it's offline for some split screen co-op that doesn't require designing any net code so your can play locally with your family or your friends.

.... Right?

Obscure_Observer733d ago

"Yes, I'm sure drop in/drop out co-op is super easy to implement."

Nobody said it´s easy to implement, dude. Insomniac could just add it down the line as an future update. But it´s their game and their vision, they´ll do whatever they want with it anyway, just like any other studio.

DarXyde733d ago

Obscure _Observer,

I don't see the point. That's too GaaS-y and they've got other projects on their plate.

Either way, don't think it needs it, period. Never felt like it was a missed opportunity with the original or Miles Morales

jambola733d ago

Yeah it's very easy
Like dragging a file from one folder to the other
Just drag and drop the other character In

Obscure_Observer733d ago

@DarXyde

"I don't see the point. That's too GaaS-y and they've got other projects on their plate."

There´s nothing GaaS-y in drop in/drop out co-op for single player focused games, dude. You´ll be allowed to play the main campaign with a fellow gamer and that´s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

That said, I do agree that Insomniac already has multiple projects in development as it is.

lukasmain734d ago (Edited 734d ago )

I don't mind either way. I'm so excited for this. Maybe co-op for a future game. A natural progression to keeps things fresh. Co-op could be really cool if done right.
