Nintendo Switch Successor Not Happening for Another Year at Least

Nintendo has put a stop to rumours about its new hardware, whether it's the long-rumoured Switch Pro or otherwise, by declaring that a Switch successor won't be released until April 2024 at the earliest.

Switch 2 announcement this year??? Launching next year???

Sonic1881352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

Or announcement next year and launching early 2025. Launching next year is a stretch but I wouldn't be surprised

NotoriousWhiz351d ago

The current Switch was released ~6 months after it was first announced.

Vits353d ago

That was a weird specific date to announce.
Well, we also started seeing Nvidia's Orin development kits going around. And both the Nano and the NX could be used as bases for the SoC going into Nintendo's next device. Both run at the desirable 5w to 20w and are around 3x the performance of the current Switch. Putting the successor on a similar ballpark as the PS4 which could very well be further improved by Nvidia's tech with DLSS/frame generation.

I doubt Switch 2 will just be an upgrade hardware. There’s going to be a surprise somewhere. This is Nintendo we’re talking about.

Vits352d ago

This is not Iwata's Nintendo though. Furukawa appears to be a much more "by the books" kind of fellow, his biggest contribution being part of the Pokemon Company during its most safe years (Black & White 2 up to OR/AS).

So I wouldn't put past the dude just releasing a Switch 2 with upgraded internal hardware and calling it a day. But that said. There are other gimmicks that we could see. Capacitative touch on the controllers, as well as a camera for AR, would be my bets.

NotoriousWhiz351d ago

I could definitely see the surprise being either VR or AR.

Tapani351d ago

Indeed, if they can have DLSS Quality + FG at low resolutions and maybe even a 120hz screen, I would be very interested in one. They will have to do more than a tech upgrade though, Switch was revolutionary. Nintendo won't let go of it just like that either.

Jin_Sakai352d ago

Yea I’ll wait and play Zelda: TotK on the Switch successor. Likely Holiday 2024.

ThePacemaker352d ago

I will wait too. After playing countless 60 FPS games on PS5, I can’t imagine myself going back to 30 FPS games.

Nebaku352d ago

No one cares. They aren't comparable, they're made for different kinds of play.

It's like saying you can't go back to using a microwave after making stuff in an oven.

gamerz351d ago

Shut up!!! You're obviously too stupid to appreciate stuttering frames like us real fans. All praise Nintendo!

Inverno352d ago

Don't blame you, Zelda runs pretty poorly in certain areas. And in some there are second long freeze ups that happen every few seconds. Hardware is really showing it's struggle.

Agent75351d ago

Maybe your Switch memory needs a clean up!

Inverno351d ago

Love the disagrees, doesn't change the fact that the frame rate still struggles to keep itself at 30. I guess most will find out on release.

Yui_Suzumiya351d ago

Fake news. Much more demanding games like Doom Eternal and Dying Light have no issues on Switch. Actually the only games I ever played on Switch that had any frame rate issues was funnily enough AI: The Somnium Files and its sequel which I found pretty funny because it's in no way as graphically intensive as the other games I mentioned.

Yui_Suzumiya351d ago

Just gimme Loop8 and Anonymous;Code and I'm happy as a plumb, lol

Number1TailzFan352d ago

Wow Nintendo really? King of milking.. By the time this comes out you just know there's gonna be a PS5 Pro and upgraded Xbox, then Nintendo will be back to square 1 again. Then we'll have next gen GPUs for PC just around the corner which will pull even further ahead.

Maybe Nintendo doesn't care very much about multiplatform titles, they'll be able to run but that's only thanks to the Series S, and they'll be lucky to get a few years before actual next gen systems which is better than nothing I guess.

Nintendo will really have to bring a lot of first party titles this time.

Yui_Suzumiya351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

I own 100 Switch games and none are exclusives. It's a delusion amongst none Switch owners that the Switch is only good for first party games. What It's best for is actually visual novels since it's the only place with an expansive library that includes English outside of PC. So it definitely excels in that area. It's also really good to own if you enjoy JRPG'S and FPS'S.

talocaca352d ago

It really feels like the launch of Tears of the Kingdom was the perfect time. Many of us were willing to buy new hardware to play a better version of the game.

If that didn't happen, it probably means that new hardware is still months (of not years) away.

Nebaku352d ago

That would be true if Zelda was their only IP.

They could very easily use the next Mario mainline game, or Mario Kart 9, to sell new hardware.
