It was always going to be interesting to see how Digital Foundry tackled this one. Seems they've opted for a more positive overall vibe...while at the same time acknowledging it's total jank. Bit weird, then.

Texture pop-in/slow load is a known issue with UE4, so it's one that shouldn't catch developers out at this point. You can literally stand still and wait, while they take up to 30 SECONDS to load at times, so in reality you end up never seeing them pop and you end up playing a game with textures reminiscent on PlayStation 2 - and that's no exaggeration.

There is a vertical management issue with Microsoft, xbox and Arkane. Who or what is more at fault for releasing this mess?

jznrpg733d ago

They don’t like to dog MS too much even when it’s justified. For obvious reasons

Man Arkhan’s made some great games before wonder what the hell happened

Dishonored was my favorite game from them. But it’s been a slow decline before they went off a cliff to me. Prey was lesser than Dishonored imo. Deathloop lesser than Prey and then Redfall took the plunge off the deep end.

Concord, Suicide Squad, Fairgame$ And ‘Vibes-Based’ Failures

Paul Tassi: "Sony recently reiterated its commitment to live service games with one big hit last year (Helldivers 2), one big cancellation (The Last of Us Factions) and one big failure (Concord). It’s no great surprise it is continuing down this road, given the way the industry is trending and the limited shelf life of its famed single player games. But it immediately made me think of a game that Sony is allegedly releasing that I have to believe is pre-destined to fail, Fairgame$."

Alos88126d ago

Fairgame$ feels like it's destined to flop out the gate- that initial trailer felt full of that same instantly-dated 'fight The Man with a ragtag team of weirdos' energy that was prevalent in Sega's Hyenas (which they wisely cancelled.) Unlike Marathon I just don't see this standing a chance.

Nacho_Z126d ago

It will definitely flop, missed the boat by a couple of years. Agreed that Marathon has a decent chance of succeeding it looks genuinely good and interesting.

It can't be sustainable having all these expensive GaaS being DOA being balanced by the odd modest success like Helldivers. The aim is to find the new Fortnite or whatever but it's highly unlikely and seems to be a massive waste of money.

Concord and the Other Biggest Flops of This Generation

Some of the biggest success stories in the history of gaming have happened during this generation of gaming. At the same time, some of the biggest flops in the history of gaming have also happened during this generation of gaming. To this end, a few games particularly stick out as, unfortunately, disastrous flops for those who made the games, sold the games, and ultimately, for many that played the games.

What a strange, short list. There have been many more games that arrived DOA, were never released, didn’t make their budget back, etc. Why cherry pick these games? Is this list based on the size of internet hate boners?

EternalTitan243d ago

These flops have a similarity that you may not be allowed to point out.

Skull and Bones gets my vote, at this point just completely remake AC Black Flag. If the Concord developers had made the game free to play, and toned down the in your face messaging via the mods and design choices, this game could have been serviceable eventually. I never understand why pandering to 5% of your audience and giving the finger to the other 95% seems like a good idea to these people. They never seem to learn. Disney has lost 1/3rd of its value and they keep doubling down on political messaging. I don’t get it.

BlackTar187243d ago

Some of these companies are paid huge amounts of money to do this stuff. They get truck loads of money to give “the message”
By blackrock and vanguards and multiple other venture capitalists even though it’s been proven over and over they fail.

I'm not interested in this game but i think it's great they added the offline mode for those who are.

darthv72342d ago

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

TwoPicklesGood343d ago

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

mkis007342d ago

I hate the concept of an announced final update.
