Hogwarts Legacy Dominated Q1 2023 Sales and It's Not Even Out on the Biggest Consoles Yet

NewZoo revealed that Hogwarts Legacy dominated Q1 2023 sales in the United States and the United Kingdom across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

That's without PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, where the game launches tomorrow, and without the Switch, which will get the game in late July.

"Biggest Consoles." Lol. No matter how many times the idea that cross gen games will sell better on the older systems with the bigger install base is proven to be a fallacy, video game sites will continue to regurgitate the idea as if it constitutes actual informed analysis.

CrimsonWing69784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Yep, none and I mean NONE of the cross-gen titles outsold next-gen.

Cross-gen is absolutely a waste and I hope to god these morons don't repeat this for next-gen. It has done nothing but hold games back from going full force with the new hardware and look at this, they either have to delay it or, in the case of Gotham Knights, just cancel it.

Shane Kim784d ago

Most people just stop buying games all together, waiting to get a hold of a next gen console.

JEECE784d ago

I think some of the most casual-friendly launch window titles sold better on last gen. So like COD: Black Ops Cold War and maybe a couple others. But I can't think of any examples after the start of 2021. I specifically remember Hitman 3 doing way better on PS5 than PS4.

But yeah I agree. I'd say that unless you are releasing within the first six months of generation's launch, a hardcore game should be next gen only, while casual games should maybe be cross gen for two years or so.

CrimsonWing69784d ago

@JEECE

I’d need to see the data on that because Vanguard sold much much more on PS5

Granted this is solely UK numbers:

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

PS5 - 41% of sales
PS4 - 29% of sales

Now imagine numbers for non-COD games. The fact still remains that the theory of the larger install base will outsell next-gen is largely inaccurate.

Holding onto last-gen holds next-gen back. When next-gen comes around they need and should abandon last-gen so we can get these amazing games pushing the hardware right away instead of waiting damn near 3 years into the console lifecycle.

Here's the link. This is on the UK weekly sales chart from November 23, 2020. Apparently at that time COD Cold War and Assassin's Creed Valhalla were selling better on PS4, while Miles Morales sold better on PS5. As far as I know, this is the only recorded instance of PS4 versions of games outselling the PS5 version (outside of Japan).

This is 100% true. Even though new consoles have the smaller install base, they have the higher spending audience. Hogwarts may not even sell half as well on PS4 and Xbox One.

leahcim784d ago

The game is really amazing, so detailed, so much to do, so fun I am 44 and I really feel the magic in this game. I think a sequel is mandatory.

GoodGuy09784d ago

I am curious as to how it'll do on the switch and last gen. Let's hope the longer release does get this game well optimized on the switch especially.

Demetrius784d ago

One of my all time favorite games not it made me watch the Harry Potter movie I watched part 1 and on prisoner of Azkaban now lol but yes they deserve the sales it got sucha mysterious type charm to it like something nostalgic

jznrpg784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

More sales for current gen than last gen for games. I’m sure it will sell some copies but don’t expect surpassing PS5 numbers or coming close

I mean, did anyone think the Switch 2 would be comparable to current-gen? Yea, I’m pretty sure it’s going to give you PS4 quality looking/playing games and in a couple years we’ll be onto PS6 and most third-party games will either be downgraded to hell or just not be available on Switch 2 🤷‍♂️.

Profchaos15d ago

I was never under any illusion it would compare to series s imagine the battery life

ABizzel115d ago (Edited 15d ago )

It’s doing exactly what I expected and what it needed to do base Xbox One settings in most games upscaled to 2x the resolution with DLSS when docked, and running with better performance. What more can you ask for out of a 10w - ~57w~ platform

Current-gen AAA Games (SX/PS5): 540p @ 30-40fps most games upscaled to 1080p @ 30-40fps
Last-gen AAA Games (XBO/PS4): 720p @ 30-60fps most games upscaled to 1440p @ 30-60fps
PS360/Switch AAA Games: 1080p @ 30-60fps most games upscaled to 1440p-4K @ 30-60fps
Rare cases the PS360/Switch games at 1080p@120fps games like Metroid

And that’s perfectly fine, except docked mode on AAA games could become fairly blurry on large 4K displays.

Babadook715d ago

Sorry, I disagree with this sentiment. The Switch 2 is a current gen machine and well above the PS4 Pro. It goes toe to toe with the Series S due to great DLSS and a modern architecture in many games. This game (Hogwarts Legacy) has always been the poorest example of what the Switch 2 can do and appears to simply be a bad port. Cyberpunk 2077 is on the other hand a great port.

OtterX15d ago

for a handheld it's quite nice, but don't go in expecting a serious console. Keep your PS5 and/or PC. You can tell a huge difference in those long distance shots w the foilage/grass. But again on an 8 inch screen, I bet it looks and plays decent enough.

Neonridr15d ago

the way I look at it, the PS4 Pro still had some gorgeous games. If I could have games that looked like TLOU2 on the system, would I really care about what it would look like on a PS5? No.

OtterX15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Only on my 55" 4k do I care for that extra oomph. I would be blown away to have a game on par graphically w the PS4 Pro version of TLOU II on a handheld!

Grilla15d ago

Graphics are irrelevant if it’s not running at 60fps

anast15d ago

Switch 2 is around $450 to $700 depending on the country. Let that sink in. Get that nice '280p' Cyberpunk...

They are comparing the S to the PS4. HA!

Couldn't go 2 sentences without bringing up JK Rowling's viewpoints (which are now acknowledged and supported by the UK Supreme Court). Time for all the "progressive" whiners to latch back on to reality.
