Redfall Review: Falls At The Finish Line | Hey Poor Player

HPP: "Between the half-baked gameplay loops, repetitive open-world busy work, and shockingly poor optimization, Redfall feels like a title that’s still in alpha, never mind a product that’s supposed to represent a flagship title for Microsoft’s premium subscription service."

I think 4/10 is bit harsh!
hopefully they can turn it around with patches etc Arkane is a good team.

dead_pixels775d ago (Edited 775d ago )

A bit harsh? We literally couldn't go five minutes through our review playthrough without hitting some kind of bug, many of which required us to close the game down to resolve them. Between that, the largely empty world, and loot that's just unexciting on every level, I honestly don't know how we could justify scoring it higher.

Arkane is absolutely a good team, but the game just wasn't ready for launch and likely wouldn't have been for months, judging from the state of the review build we received. It's clear there were other factors that led to the game being pushed out before its time, as there's no way Arkane could possibly be unaware of such glaring issues. I honestly feel sorry for the team.

ravens52775d ago

What would you rate it without the glitches and bugs.

dead_pixels775d ago

@ravens52 - without glitches? Probably a 3. It can be fun with a friend, but the world just isn't that exciting to explore, especially when the vampire nests tend to all end at the same weird gas station setpiece. The lack of variety and a loot system that fails to gratify in the way other looter shooters do keep it from standing out from the other games in its genre.

solideagle775d ago

thank you for clarifying...much appreciated :)

Sgt_Slaughter775d ago

What makes it worse is, this was developed by Arkane Austin. That's the team that developed Prey and Dishonored, this is far from their usual work. No idea how it got this bad.

For reference, Dishonored 2 and Deathloop was Arkane Lyon.

Christopher775d ago (Edited 775d ago )

I'm glad my few hours in the game have been bug and glitch free.

You said the same thing in the last 4/10 review. At some point to we have to accept that it's bad - like, even worse that the launch lead up indicated.

It's buggier than Starship Troopers, right now. This is going to take time to patch out and even then, what about everything else? The state of this game just reaffirms my suspicion that it's not finished. The 30fps was just one early sign, but you have to wonder if they've skipped playtesting and QA entirely due to time constraints.

dead_pixels775d ago

@Sully, I shit you not when I say that "Buggier Than Starship Troopers" was almost our tagline.

solideagle775d ago

yeah that one I submitted :) I didn't know it was so buggier because there are some 9/10, 8/10 reviews as well. based on that I said I think 4/10 is bit harsh :)

It is, what we thought it was....AND YOU LET EM OFF THE HOOK!

4/10.

They should delay it for another year or until it is truly finished. It's better to be bashed because of the delay than to be bashed because of buggy unfinished game.

More like stumbles out of the gate, this one came in like a meteor, a sizzling hot mess

Concord, Suicide Squad, Fairgame$ And ‘Vibes-Based’ Failures

Paul Tassi: "Sony recently reiterated its commitment to live service games with one big hit last year (Helldivers 2), one big cancellation (The Last of Us Factions) and one big failure (Concord). It’s no great surprise it is continuing down this road, given the way the industry is trending and the limited shelf life of its famed single player games. But it immediately made me think of a game that Sony is allegedly releasing that I have to believe is pre-destined to fail, Fairgame$."

Alos88163d ago

Fairgame$ feels like it's destined to flop out the gate- that initial trailer felt full of that same instantly-dated 'fight The Man with a ragtag team of weirdos' energy that was prevalent in Sega's Hyenas (which they wisely cancelled.) Unlike Marathon I just don't see this standing a chance.

Nacho_Z163d ago

It will definitely flop, missed the boat by a couple of years. Agreed that Marathon has a decent chance of succeeding it looks genuinely good and interesting.

It can't be sustainable having all these expensive GaaS being DOA being balanced by the odd modest success like Helldivers. The aim is to find the new Fortnite or whatever but it's highly unlikely and seems to be a massive waste of money.

Concord and the Other Biggest Flops of This Generation

Some of the biggest success stories in the history of gaming have happened during this generation of gaming. At the same time, some of the biggest flops in the history of gaming have also happened during this generation of gaming. To this end, a few games particularly stick out as, unfortunately, disastrous flops for those who made the games, sold the games, and ultimately, for many that played the games.

What a strange, short list. There have been many more games that arrived DOA, were never released, didn’t make their budget back, etc. Why cherry pick these games? Is this list based on the size of internet hate boners?

EternalTitan281d ago

These flops have a similarity that you may not be allowed to point out.

Skull and Bones gets my vote, at this point just completely remake AC Black Flag. If the Concord developers had made the game free to play, and toned down the in your face messaging via the mods and design choices, this game could have been serviceable eventually. I never understand why pandering to 5% of your audience and giving the finger to the other 95% seems like a good idea to these people. They never seem to learn. Disney has lost 1/3rd of its value and they keep doubling down on political messaging. I don’t get it.

BlackTar187281d ago

Some of these companies are paid huge amounts of money to do this stuff. They get truck loads of money to give “the message”
By blackrock and vanguards and multiple other venture capitalists even though it’s been proven over and over they fail.

I'm not interested in this game but i think it's great they added the offline mode for those who are.

darthv72379d ago

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

TwoPicklesGood380d ago

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

mkis007379d ago

I hate the concept of an announced final update.
