Should Xbox Delay ‘Redfall’ Again? Can It?

On Wednesday, Arkane generated an intense amount of backlash when they announced that Redfall, their upcoming co-op loot shooter, would be launching only with "Quality Mode," meaning it would maximize visuals but only run at 30 FPS on both the Xbox Series S and Series X.

Redfall seems like a different case where it’s not traversing 1,000 planets, but is a single map and stylized graphics that at least make it seem like hitting that FPS mark shouldn’t be hard (albeit this is a bit of armchair game dev-ing). Regardless, the end result is a lot of angry people and calls for a delay.

masterfox803d ago

well they are pretty good at it, sooo.

SullysCigar802d ago

It might honestly be too little, too late at this stage. This game has been bungled from start to finish and I don't think microsoft opting for another delay is going to help matters. Either way it's crappy news, so they might as well hold the course.

ModsDoBetter802d ago

I understand your comment but let’s not pretend Sony and others don’t delay games either.

Some recent examples:

-Final Fantasy XVI pushed back 6 months
-Forspoken
-God of War: Ragnarok
-Tchia

Just a few off the top of my head. & yes, delays can be good for the end product but disappointing for gamers, particularly those on a platform with more losses than wins.

Whilst Xbox does appear to suffer more delays, I find the false narrative people push hinting that only one company delay their exclusives just reeks of cognitive dissonance.

DarkZane802d ago

When was FInal Fantasy XVI delayed? June 22nd is the release date and it's the only one we got and it was never stated to come out in 2022.

Beside, this and Forspoken are developed by Square-Enix and Tchia isn't a first party either, so Sony didn't delay any of those.

ModsDoBetter802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

@DarkZane

These are just a few examples.

Final Fantasy XVI was pushed back 6 months due to Covid - see the article on the verge.

What’s the excuse for God of War?
I’d also point out that Redfall most likely began development prior to the acquisition. So with that in mind, what would be the excuse for Lightfall? As Sony bought Bungie over?

I’m simply trying to point out a double standard in the fanboys logic here.

Microsoft seems to be the ONLY one who get criticism for delays meanwhile people get on their knees and pucker up for Sony with “DeLaYs MaKe FoR bEtTeR gAmEs”

Make it make sense.
Be consistent.

Lightning77802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

The thing is Sony is still consistent all around at releasing the games that matter the most.

MS had no AAA 1st party games last year and it's been almost a year in a half since they've had any. They aren't even remotely the same. These are just the facts.

ModsDoBetter802d ago

@Lightning

Whilst I understand that point, which I referenced above here: “ & yes, delays can be good for the end product but disappointing for gamers, particularly those on a platform with more losses than wins.”

I still feel there is unparalleled bias when it comes to releases and delays. Microsoft cannot gain any positivity:

they release a broken game - lose.
They delay a game - lose.
They drop a surprise exclusive that scores consistent 8/9s across the board - downplayed in the comments with “b-b-but look at what they did in the past, they don’t release games.”

If we all went by that logic, we would keep on harping on about how Sony compromised customers’ personal and payment information alongside suffering a massive service outage during probably the worst data breach in gaming history. But we don’t. (I know, bit of a stretch as a totally different topic altogether but just trying to show the constant bringing up of the past only matters for one company).

The same can be said for exclusives.
People on here began trashing everything on Xbox as it was coming to PC. Those same people have been pretty quiet since Sony started pumping their exclusives on PC too.

Fact of the matter is, on this site:

Sony delays: people lap it up.
Microsoft delays: people trash it.

It will always be the way it is, unfortunately.

DOMination-802d ago

I get the point, but better examples should be used - three of those four games aren't even developed by Sony

Redemption-64802d ago

@oIMyersIo

What’s the excuse for God of War?

You must be living under a rock. The delay for God War ragnarok came because Christopher Judge, the voice actor behind Kratos, has revealed that God Of War: Ragnarok was delayed due to an illness he faced in 2019. Taking to Twitter, Judge stated “Ragnarok was delayed because of me” and explained that in 2019 he faced significant health issues leaving him unable to walk.

Is that a good enough so called excuse for you?

ModsDoBetter802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

@Domination

I completely agree, I’m sure there are many more examples to use as studios, first and third party have delays on both platforms.

Those were just some exclusives I thought of on the spot. The thing is, even if there were third party exclusive delays for Microsoft, we both know the attitude on this site would be the same and the reason “they’re not first party studios” won’t hold any water.

@Redemption
*sigh*

I considered not replying due to your unnecessarily condescending comment, but thought I would.

I was unaware that was the cause for the delay, & no, I don’t live under a rock. I just didn’t happen to know this and that’s fine. There’s no need to act in the manner which you have done. Thanks for the information.

However, your comment highlights the problem with you and some other individuals here.

You simply cannot hold a civil discussion without being condescending behind a keyboard.

Again though, like most fanboys on both sides of the fence, you nit-pick and select one or two points and ignore the others, regardless of their validity if it can be met with an explanation or not. See: Destiny.

I actually like being condescending when I come across someone that is either ignorant or misinformed. Don't care about what others have to say to you or how you take me providing you with facts on why the game was delayed. Facts don't care about your feelings.

@OlMyerslo
Difference being that Sony is delivering masterpiece games. (And doesnt delay them usually)

shinoff2183802d ago

God of War was the only one developed by a Sony studio though lol

r2oB802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

@ olmyerslo

The only reason Lightfall was pushed back was because the prior expansion, Witch Queen, was delayed (domino effect). If they didn't push the release back then one of the seasons, that people paid for, would have been cut short (each season is 3 months). The reason Witch Queen was delayed in 2021 was due to complications from the pandemic, an unforseen circumstance at the time.

Yikes, so you’re just a c**t then?
Big man behind a keyboard over a videogame? Grow up. 😂

@Necrosis

Quit reaching, not the case at all.
Middle of the road. As stated time and time again, this attitude is just hypocritical.

@Shinoff

Please read the entire thread before jumping.
As stated *checks notes* two comments ago, I am aware there could’ve been better examples used and I was discussing exclusives as opposed to first party. Try harder.

Ah right, right, so when Halo Infinite was delayed for the same reason at the time (Pandemic) the Sony fanboys came with their pitchforks but when it’s a Sony title it’s okay? That’s the exact thing I’m pointing out here, complete double standard.

For the record, Halo: Infinite was and is a trash game, but that’s besides the point regarding the people who jab at delay announcements for one company only.

Sony's entire 2022 slate was delayed from 2021. :)

ModsDoBetter801d ago

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Deathloop
Returnal

Are just a few examples of exclusives that released in 2021 and weren’t delayed until 2022.

Forbidden West: delayed from 2021 to 2022
Witch Queen: delayed from 2021 to 2022

Two I could find that were actually delayed, not adding GoW as already mentioned above.

However, that being said, both Stray & The Last of Us: Part I were slated for 2022 and released in 2022. I can’t find anything that says otherwise.

As much as I want to agree with you because some of the Sony fanboys on this site just ooze toxicity, you’re not 100% accurate.

HyperMoused803d ago

i dont see a lot of love for this game, nothing ive seen makes it look amazing, this will be sort of sleeper hit where it delivers or it will be DOA, im guessing the latter.

just_looken803d ago

like so many out there sadly

like outsiders/babalons fall/back 4 blood/battleborn or the recent konami pes soccer game

just_looken802d ago

lawbreaks oh man yeah after gears cliffs career went well of a cliff.

I remember Radical Heights thinking of lawbreakers there last swing at the plate.

enkiduxiv802d ago

I feel like all of these games have something in common too. I wonder what it could be…

ModsDoBetter802d ago

Such a shame.

Outriders was a mess, still is pretty unstable.
B4B was fun at first but ran its course far too quick.
Babylon’s fall….lol.
Battleborn was fun and shouldn’t have been killed off when it was, but the marketing for that game was absolute garbage, nobody knew what it was.

Tbh a delayed product is better than a rushed product

onisama802d ago

maybe this is the first time i agree with you

dumahim802d ago

You only get a first impression once. Make it a good one.

SullysCigar802d ago

Seems a bit late for that in this case.

ModsDoBetter802d ago

Agreed with @Sully.

If Xbox delay this, it’s a joke.
If they launch it with these limitations, it’s a joke.

Game is stuck between a rock and a hard place and really needs to be a surprise hit to gain any goodwill.

Tacoboto802d ago

Yeah, I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel for this game - and Jason Schreier highlighted another thing about its release, being a few days after Star Wars Jedi and a week or so before Zelda, and this weird drop of news. It really does seem like Bethesda is keen on this game failing.

Maybe it deserves to fail, too - I'm sure always-online co-op is the technical reason for not having 60fps on console since players aren't tethered to one another like in Halo, but Arkane fans have not ever asked for a multiplayer or co-op game from them.

Now that they're on Game Pass, their Xbox-premiere is the first 30fps-only shooter released since 2020. If they delay further to squeeze in 60fps, the harm is done in that we've seen the judgment they had throughout this project's development.

shinoff2183802d ago

Olmyerslo

I'm on the side theybshouldve delayed. I prefer Sony but devs shouldn't release things if they ain't alright with it. Delay it until your happy with the product. Ie cyberpunk

No fan boy argument or nothing if a game isn't straight , delay it

ModsDoBetter802d ago

@shinoff

They probably should delay, sure, but with all of the marketing and already countless setbacks Microsoft have faced, they’ll be reluctant to do so.

The trouble with Microsoft that I think is that they plan all of these games to release on a spread out schedule: “Minecraft then Redfall, couple of months and we’ll get Starfield out, then Forza” but then as soon as one game is delayed it means there’s an even bigger gap between launches.

There’s also the whole thing with the industry as a whole where it has almost become the norm for games to release unfinished or with issues that get patched later.

Almost every major launch nowadays is lacking features from NG+ to photo mode to performance boosts being patched in at a later date. It’s a shame, really.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 802d ago
Tedakin801d ago

Yes. Games only get reviewed once. This is the start of a potential new franchise. A new IP. They need it to come out as solid as possible. No one will dock points for the game being delayed. They will dock points if it's a mess when it's released.

CrimsonWing69802d ago

I honestly don’t know the ins and outs of industry finance and whether this has to come out in 2nd fiscal quarter, but I think with all the releases why would you risk putting out a next-gen game with only a 30fps? 1) you’re going to get bad publicity that will harm sales, 2) I’m curious if this will have an impact on reviews similar to Gotham Knights, which will harm sales, 3) you announce to people that the performance mode is coming, which will make some people who don’t have Game Pass wait until the mode is patched in, which will also harm sales.

There’s also a bunch of massive hitters coming out this month, next month, and the month after. I feel like you’re setting your game up for failure releasing it like this.

But, again, I don’t know if it’s like Microsoft has to absolutely push this out for this quarter or what. Just seems like a dumb decision otherwise, to me.

neutralgamer1992802d ago

Yes and make sure when it launches everything is fixed

60FPS mode (must be ready at launch)
Single player offline mode (must be ready at launch)

1440-120 mode (this is the only thing that can be done after game launch)

Concord, Suicide Squad, Fairgame$ And ‘Vibes-Based’ Failures

Paul Tassi: "Sony recently reiterated its commitment to live service games with one big hit last year (Helldivers 2), one big cancellation (The Last of Us Factions) and one big failure (Concord). It’s no great surprise it is continuing down this road, given the way the industry is trending and the limited shelf life of its famed single player games. But it immediately made me think of a game that Sony is allegedly releasing that I have to believe is pre-destined to fail, Fairgame$."

Alos88173d ago

Fairgame$ feels like it's destined to flop out the gate- that initial trailer felt full of that same instantly-dated 'fight The Man with a ragtag team of weirdos' energy that was prevalent in Sega's Hyenas (which they wisely cancelled.) Unlike Marathon I just don't see this standing a chance.

Nacho_Z173d ago

It will definitely flop, missed the boat by a couple of years. Agreed that Marathon has a decent chance of succeeding it looks genuinely good and interesting.

It can't be sustainable having all these expensive GaaS being DOA being balanced by the odd modest success like Helldivers. The aim is to find the new Fortnite or whatever but it's highly unlikely and seems to be a massive waste of money.

Concord and the Other Biggest Flops of This Generation

Some of the biggest success stories in the history of gaming have happened during this generation of gaming. At the same time, some of the biggest flops in the history of gaming have also happened during this generation of gaming. To this end, a few games particularly stick out as, unfortunately, disastrous flops for those who made the games, sold the games, and ultimately, for many that played the games.

What a strange, short list. There have been many more games that arrived DOA, were never released, didn’t make their budget back, etc. Why cherry pick these games? Is this list based on the size of internet hate boners?

These flops have a similarity that you may not be allowed to point out.

Skull and Bones gets my vote, at this point just completely remake AC Black Flag. If the Concord developers had made the game free to play, and toned down the in your face messaging via the mods and design choices, this game could have been serviceable eventually. I never understand why pandering to 5% of your audience and giving the finger to the other 95% seems like a good idea to these people. They never seem to learn. Disney has lost 1/3rd of its value and they keep doubling down on political messaging. I don’t get it.

BlackTar187290d ago

Some of these companies are paid huge amounts of money to do this stuff. They get truck loads of money to give “the message”
By blackrock and vanguards and multiple other venture capitalists even though it’s been proven over and over they fail.
