Putting the lightning in lightning-fast SSD

Tapani804d ago

Well thank god the didn't put lightning in FFXVI!

masterfox805d ago

very true statement imo, from the past years the data access the PS5 has beyond amazing and a true generational leap from the past console, not only from a console point of view but a generational huge leap for all the PC industry, SSDs and NVMe, M2, SSD PCIe or whatever other tech , has been available for PC since more than a decade, PCs have been receiving this super fast SSD tech since ever, but not single time has managed to pull such instant loadings for heavy visual games like the PS5 is doing with their exclusives.

*Pretty much the whole game from beginning to end, you’re not going to have any load times. *

FFXVI will be effing amazing!, even third party games when upgraded to a PS5 version the load times are reduced alot, but exclusive take the crown when using the SSD access tech no doubt, I have always asked my self why in hell for so many freaking years PC always getting this new tech for SSDs, M2, SSDs PCIe, but always have in lots of games this freaking big load times?, why they didn't thrive way before the PS5 with this tech?, there is a thing called direct storage that is on its baby steps and I think only few games barely supported and it supposed to reduced load times I think, but oh well PC is getting there. lol

Tapani804d ago (Edited 804d ago )

The PC version of the games ran with Gen 3/4 NVMe drives load pretty much the same as their PS5 counterparts. For example, after a few patches Spider-Man loads faster or slower (within 0.5 second marginal) depending on the drive on PC vs PS5. The Returnal is similar. FFVIIR as well.

The developer is comparing the development to the previous generation of Playstation. If they were to target a Gen 3 NVMe drive as a minimum on PC, they'd reduce development time similarly. In the near future that will be the case for all PC games as HDD will be dropped (already is in some cases.) Regardless, the point here is not PC vs PS5, but PS5 vs PS4.

Also, you may remember that previously Mark Cerny specifically mentioned that the SSDs are not only designed for loading at the start or in middle of the games (reducing unnecessary tunnels etc.), but also to stream constantly more data in front of you while playing (Aka Ratcher & Clank Rift Apart). It opens up the levels and game design.

Here's an example of Gen 3 drive PC vs PS5 loading comparison: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

As you can see, PS5 can also lose to the Gen 3 (technically slower than the PS5 SSD), so it really can be about the implementation. Watch till the end.

shaenoide804d ago

To be honest none of these game were designed with a mandatory SSD in mind.

For the first time in recent history consoles are held back by PC (and cross gen titles to be fair) with SSD being only recommended (Returnal falls in this category).

That's a shame SSD are only reducing loading time.

Alexious804d ago

Yeah, I'll wait for the PC version.

Tapani804d ago

@Alexious
I'm actually thinking of getting the PS5 version, but later then again the PC version! I'll see what Digital Foundry says and what the metacritic average is first, though. If it's anything like the FFXIV story, I'm sold.

blackblades804d ago

@Alexious
Riiight wait for the PC port which lately been disastrous and over 6 months to a year away.

thesoftware730804d ago

Why would people downvote you for a well-written, backed-up, and even proven reality?

Even worst no one explains why they disagree with you, smh, This site can be strange.

Tapani804d ago

@thesoftware730

I'm not sure! But it's okay as I've never really looked at the upvotes and downvotes. I'll just express my opinion honestly while trying to make it well-constructed and back it up with data. This site is much more fun if you don't think about upvotes and downvotes and just read people's comments and react to them by writing something. Maybe to some it's a battle, but to me it's a discussion forum!

Even PS4 games load a LOT faster I really
love the Speed speed speed of the PS5 . They went with faster ram , SSD, and cpu clock to get all the use of the GPU and that’s clocked higher as well.

Vizigoth04804d ago

Another thing I’ve noticed and I think it’s the beauty of the SSD and Wi-Fi 6 support is how fast games download especially on a wired connection. It’s superior compared to there Series XIS

FallenAngel1984805d ago

Nice to see a modern mainline Final Fantasy game not run into any development issues that prolong its release

FFXII-FFXV had development issues but FFXVI finally bucked that trend

antikbaka804d ago

loadings are slower than in Horizon or Ghost of Tsushima.
textures are worse. Fighting - forspoken like.

Liers.

BrainSyphoned804d ago

Two Sony studios at the top of their game are better than Yoshi's first outing? Sick burn ya got there.

jznrpg804d ago

Fighting in Forspoken was actually good

S2Killinit804d ago

Where did you come ip with that?

MrNinosan804d ago

No, the fighting is not Forspoken like, however I wouldn't mind as Forspoken fighting is by far the most fun combat I had in years.

andy85804d ago

Nothing wrong with Forspokens combat that was one of the highlights.

I love this controller. Feels so nice in the hand. Plus the battery lasts for days, it's crazy.

$100 ?????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????

1nsomniac6h ago

Yea the pricing for Nintendo peripherals is a bigger joke than the game prices. What the hell were they thinking!

Vits6h ago

The thing is, over the past decade, third-party controllers have really stepped up. You can often get better quality, more durability, and stronger performance for half the price of first-party options. Meanwhile, controllers from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have become increasingly mediocre, expensive, fragile, and not particularly impressive across the board. What makes this especially noticeable with Nintendo is that they’re surprisingly open to third-party hardware. That openness ends up highlighting just how much better the alternatives are.

Vits1h ago

Pretty much most things by half a dozen of chinese manufactures. Like, 8bitdo, Gamesir, Machenike, Gulikit, Flydigi, Manba, EasySMX, etc.

The exception would be really low tier stuff by those companies... those wouldn't be better, they would be about the same quality. But more durable.

Themba764h ago

Best controller I’ve ever used I even like more than my dual sense edge

PRIMORDUS2h ago

I have the original pro controller and TBH, I don't use it as much. I'm mostly using the Switch in handheld mode with the Hori Split Pad Compact Controller. I also never use the back buttons to program anything so I will not be buying this one here, so that will be $85.00 in my pocket 😂

Very good dev length for a AAA/AA game I'd say. Companies need to set an aim for this range. 1-2 is too little, I believe 3-4 is perfect. Any more is too much. Games don't need to be these gigantic games full of a crazy amount of content. Just make a good game.

Skate-AK18h ago

Lol. Had no idea who that was, but I will admit they do look quite similar.

Hideo Kojima calls Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 “ideal” for one key reason

Legendary gaming auteur Hideo Kojima heaped praise on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, calling it “ideal” for one significant reason.

gigoran81d 2h ago

Greatness knows greatness. Simple as that. Expedition 33 is a masterpiece, built with a smaller team and with a smaller budget, blowing ubisoft out of the water. It doesn't matter how many devs you have and how much money you throw at it, great studios like Sandfall Interactive will always overcome you.

mastershredder9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Ideal are you opinions being vacant from any discussion that is not about your own cringy universe Hideo.

The master of Vanity Tech Demos is here to tell us what a good game is. ooooh kay. It's pretty dang obvious without your 2 cents desperately needing relevance. This is just like his GTA grovel a while back. Yuck.

gold_drake9h ago

quite honestly, i havent been able to stop thinking about it ha.

i keep playing it

He’s massively overrated and writes terrible dialogue.
