E3 Is Basically Dead, But Video Games Will Be Fine

E3 is a dying commodity, but the various companies in the video game industry have found better ways to showcase the newest titles on their own terms.

Talk to big wig journalists and theyll tell you that E3 pain to prep for. Booking hotel, long lines, have to wait for interviews with devs if you're not mainstream journos.

Allot goes into with very little pay off especially in the past 7 8 years or so when E3 shows started to be constantly underwhelming.

1 show a year and we have to wait a year for more announcements is dead. It's an old way of doing things. All these games don't have to compete for the spotlight they can do there own thing.

I just hope SGF will have stage demos showing off the game's instead of pre made shows. Hopefully we'll get that as soon as SGF grows it'll be like a new "E3" with live stage demos and presentations in the future.

I went to EGX which is a smallish event here in the UK to try PSVR and play division 1 and it was 3 hour lines for 80% of the games.
Cost me £20 to get in, £10 parking and £30 in fuel to try PSVR and look at some cosplay girls and I went home, didn`t even bother with the games lol.

I did like E3, all the new announcements and games being showed first time to the public for all platforms, bit of completion picking best show of e3 was good too, I definitely was waiting for it every year and I will miss it....

Didn't know we were supposed to worry that the industry would die without one needless convention.

Exactly the concept is dated now. Covid really just moved the needle to the inevitable, what was already slowly happening before covid. Which was pubs and devs putting on there own events, doing there own shows. They can say hey guys we'll have a showcase showing off 30 minutes of the new Dragon Age or Mass effect next week stay tuned and still receive the same amount of views, buzz, attention and pre-orders.

One and done events are annoying. What if you were looking forward to a certain game. Only for it to no show then get told it'll be at next year's E3. So you have to wait another 365 days a year for that one game? Wack.

The whole "wait for E3" isn't just an Xbox meme it's real E3 meme also.

E3 has been dead for years now. I don't know why media outlets are running these stories like it's a surprise. The publishers benefit significantly more by hosting their own events as they choose when, where, budget, etc... and still get a similar effect as E3 without having to share the spotlight with literally every major company in gaming.

While this is true, I'll miss the mid PS3 to mid PS4 era of E3. It was genuinely exciting to see what was coming out all in one big showcase I could hunker down, get snacks and watch once per year. It was like a proper little occasion for me and my buddies to stay up late and watch the showcases together. It was always great when they had a banger of a *lights fade back up* "oh... and one more thing..." moment for a big reveal.

I get that with the Internet now that format was always going to die off, but it doesn't make the new drip feed of news we get now any less exciting. If anything it's kind of tiring watching a bunch of smaller individual publisher videos like State Of Play etc throughout the year as they often disappoint.

Why wouldn`t video games be fine? who writes this shite.

I miss the old E3s but there is just no incentive anymore for the big publishers to share the limelight in a way that could make them seem bad if another publisher shows something stellar that looks better than their offerings. They all can easily put out a direct style presentation where they control the narrative and have the spotlight all to themselves.
