The Walking Dead PSVR2 Looks Generations Apart from Meta Quest 2

We know that PSVR2 is significantly more powerful than Meta Quest 2. The headset is not only utilising cutting-edge tech, but it’s also powered by Sony’s new-gen PS5 console, which is obviously far more advanced than Meta’s built-in mobile chipset.

Despite all that, however, the irritatingly named The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution practically looks like a remake on PlayStation’s latest visor.

I was mocking the people that complain that it's wired. I thought the classic "buh... buh..." would make it obvious. But not for some people, it seems.

Bathyj401d ago

Yeah I got it. I was agreeing with you.

ApocalypseShadow401d ago (Edited 401d ago )

It's like even the graphics are exclusive to PS VR 2. LMAO. I can see it now. "Sony's paying to keep graphics off of other platforms'... Lol.

"But but but they are just ports."

"But but but PS VR 2 only has a few exclusives"

... Looks at Grid Legends and then looks at GT7... Then looks again at Grid Legends... Lol!

Then, you got those that'll mention PC and wireless. Wireless don't make graphics better. And PC costs more. When stand alone gets its ass kicked, they run to PC. Every time.

Bathyj401d ago

I don't really care that a lot of these games are ports since I never played them anyway. They're new to me

Plus we're getting the best versions of them, from the graphics to the haptics to the frame rates.

Neonridr400d ago

I mean if you have a Quest 2, you do get that option at least. Great that you can take it with you and use it wherever you want if you are ok with the downgrade in visuals. Have a beefy PC? then you can connect it and the games look better.

I don't understand the point you are trying to make. That's literally the appeal of the Quest line of headsets.

MrNinosan400d ago

@Neonridr
You do know that the Quest headset itself, doesn't get better, even if it's wired, right? What you do get however, is the opportunity to play PCVR games, but still with low resolution etc

ApocalypseShadow400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

Neon, I'm just having a laugh. It's not even about graphics. I can play games with terrible graphics. As long as it's fun, who cares.

Even if it's true what I said. That "option," isn't cheap. The setup isn't seamless and plug and play using Quest 2 on PC. Every dig stand-alone gamers had against Sony's VR is coming back to bite them in the ass.

Sony's headset is better for games, better sound, better controllers, better first party studios, better back catalog of franchises to turn into VR games, better AAA third party support (as PSVR got games like Hitman and Skyrim while Quest didn't), better company for games, etc. Nothing but ass biting bro. Lol.

All we hear is how many sales Quest 2 got when there's no actual confirmed number. We hear how many games it's accumulated over time against something that just launched. If it has these sales, there's no big games on the Horizon coming out soon. Just indie games which Sony gets as well but they're all better on PS VR 2.

Just taking a certain community down a peg for being so high and might over predatory $299 pricing, wireless and PC support only because Valve allows it. More sales doesn't seem to translate to higher quality VR games. Only Quest 3 has a shot to equalize things but we'll see. It better have eye tracking and foveated rendering though.

Neonridr400d ago

@MrNinosan - the games absolutely do get better when it's tethered. Walking Dead tethered is the PC version of the game, not the Quest version anymore. The headset is still the headset, but the complexity of the games do in fact change. Google is your friend my man.

Neonridr400d ago

@ApocalypseShadow - foveated rendering isn't something new age, it's a trick to reduce load on the system. If the PSVR2 didn't have foveated rendering, the overall resolution would have taken even more of a hit because the system wouldn't be able to display all that natively.

I get it's cool and all, but let's not pretend like foveated rendering makes things look better, it's just about efficiency. Eye tracking is something completely different and that IS something to be excited about.

MrNinosan400d ago

@Neonridr
I don't need google as I own Quest 2, HP Reverb, HTC Vive and PSVR2, together with a 4080 PC-setup.

And if you read my reply once again, I clearly stated that Quest 2 tethered is doing PCVR, which also goes for Saints and Sinners.

However, the fact that Quest 2 has lower resolution etc, doesn't change, even thou it's tethered.

I'm still not entirely sold on PSVR2, but this looks absolutely stunning. Having played only PSVR1 and Quest 2 so far image quality was always one of my biggest gripes.

ABizzel1400d ago

PSVR2 is a huge upgrade to PSVR1 in every way. The hardware and just how seamless it is, in comparison to PSVR1 is more than a generational leap. The leap between PSVR1 and PSVR2 is equivalent to entering the HD era aka like going from PS1 to PS3. A huge boost to quality in comparison from a technological standpoint.

The only thing holding PSVR2 back currently is the lack of in-store availability, the price (for some), and more importantly THE SOFTWARE. There are several great VR experiences on PC, and Sony would be wise to drop money to devs especially to Valve for Half Life Alyx and other VR support to enhance the success of the platform.

Fearmonkey400d ago

I have a reverb g2 on pc, its very close to that, but better on colors and black levels, a bit worse in other ways, but comparable. The thing i love about VR on ps5, it just works great and looks great, where i have to fiddle to get great performance at times on pc. Its way better than psvr 1, i hated the move controllers, the sense controllers are very nice.

porkChop401d ago

Yeah, obviously the PSVR2 version looks much better than the Quest 2 version. But on the Quest 2 you can still tether it to your PC and play the PCVR version. And you can do that wirelessly. How does the PCVR version compare?

mkis007401d ago

how much more does the pcvr version cost?

porkChop401d ago

Not sure. The price isn't listed yet on Steam for some reason.

SullysCigar401d ago

The PSVR2 version is considered the definitive version due to the haptics, triggers and screen quality, but yes, it also 'looks better' on PSVR2 than on PCVR according to sites that have tested that do far. It seems the clarity is better and it also has less pop-in compared to high end PC running ultra settings. I've seen a few comparisons, including VR Grid earlier today, all saying the same.

For me, the more important take away is that if you have Quest 2 AND PSVR2, you probably won't want to play on the Quest 2 for any number of reasons, particularly after seeing these comparisons. Watching that video in 4k 60, it's an insane difference (that gets more noticeable later in the video) and that's before you factor in comfort and controls. Even the numbers of zombies is night and day, ramping up the tension on PSVR2.

SullysCigar401d ago

Found a video from my watched history that talks about the differences during the review. It goes into lots of detail (17mins long) for anyone interested in PSVR2 vs PCVR vs Quest 2:

porkChop401d ago

" It seems the clarity is better and it also has less pop-in compared to high end PC running ultra settings."

PC has *more* pop-in? That's unusual. I wonder what happened there.

SullysCigar401d ago

^ Agreed, certainly unexpected. Presumably the ET/FR is considerably lessening the burden on processing. A lot of people also pointing out the colours popping and brighter whites, deeper blacks thanks to PSVR2 screens. They're getting great results, which can only be encouraging so early in it's lifecycle. You've got to think that each dev's second game will encompass considerable learning and they'll squeeze more out of the tech.

Babadook7400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

“PC has *more* pop-in? That's unusual. I wonder what happened there.“

PCVR has to run full quality lod everywhere (with foveated rendering you only load what you seen in high lod) and ps5 is an absolute beats for loading assets.

mkis007400d ago

Any time someone brings up pop in on pc version but not ps5 version I have to think it has to be the ssd and i/o chip.

Fearmonkey400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

the quest pc tether still doesn't look as good as a hp reverb g2, and the psvr2 is pretty comparable to the hp. Plus facecrap doesnt own it, that is a huge plus... oh and the haptics are amazing on psvr2...

mkis007400d ago

While im sure you understood what I was saying ill lay it out for you. 550+400 psvr2 + ps5= $950.

$400+ $1000 pc full build( on the cheap side) must have a modern gpu from the last few years.=$1400
Quest 2 + vr "worth it" pc ( worth it meaning far enough ahead of the internals of the quest 2 hardware)

There is at least $400 difference in price on the low side and that is without comparing the low specs of the quest 2 itself.

porkChop400d ago

I honestly didn't know that's what you meant. I thought you were asking if the PCVR version of the game costs more than the Quest version. You asked about the PCVR "version" not the PCVR setup itself. It's not a big deal, just a misunderstanding.

But yes, a decent PC plus Quest can cost more than a PS5. Realistically an $800 PC would likely be fine for PCVR, so a $1200 total cost is possible especially if you build it yourself. Regardless, yes, it does cost more.

Psvr2 is amazing i though it would be half gimmick but its truly a thing from the future i keep playing it many hours a day. Games are simply amazing and the potential is almoust limitless.

SullysCigar401d ago

I just need eye-tracked foveated rendering in No Man's Sky for a resolution boost and, with that and GT7, I'm all set for many hundreds of hours!

MIDGETonSTILTS17401d ago

$300 for Quest vs $1000 for PSVR2 vs $2000+ for Steam’s headset with Alyx.

Welcome to VR, it’s expensive.

jznrpg401d ago (Edited 401d ago )

With PSVR2 price you quoted you also get a PS5 which has a ton of games Quest 2 doesn’t have

MIDGETonSTILTS17401d ago

Yeah, as you should…. You spent $700 more?

MrNinosan400d ago

Except, many of the ones interested in videogames and VR already have a PS5, so the cost for PSVR2, is the 500$.

Astrokis400d ago

$399 for quest 2 128gb* been that way for a year. I have the discless PS5 so it was $399 plus $549 for the VR2 so $950 but you also get all PS5 & PS4 games and a ton of PS1-PS3. Plus being set for 6 years easily with a PS5 its a great gaming investment!

MIDGETonSTILTS17399d ago

I didn’t think I would get sooo many downvotes for not stressing that spending $1000 on psvr2 means you ALSO have a ps5…. You also have a gaming PC if you went with Steam’s headset?

Give it a rest fanboys… I have a psvr2, and enjoy it thoroughly.

This sounds very interesting, Superhot was a great game to take inspiration from.

I liked the VR version of SUPERHOT. If this ends up being as good I'l pick it up (once available) for PSVR2.
