The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features a price tag and file size that are further indicative of the Switch's hardware limitations.

a game file size has nothing to do with how good a game is.

FallenAngel1984817d ago

Where in the article is the quality of the game being questioned because of its file size?

Neonridr817d ago

Storage is something that all consoles have to factor in. We see "next-gen" games that clock in at well over 100GB. Physical Switch carts don't dump the entire contents to the internal storage like a PS5 or Xbox game does. People that are purely digital understand the hardware limitations and by now have already expanded the internal storage of the Switch. I've upgraded my PS5 internal storage as well because the 625GB or so wasn't going to cut it either.

FallenAngel1984817d ago

It’s more apparent with Switch because the larger file size seems to be driving up the price of the game.

Other Switch games with a similar or even larger file size still have the $60 price tag. However Nintendo doesn’t see fit to do similar pricing structure as the other third party games on their own platform

Profchaos816d ago (Edited 816d ago )

Bingo Mario 64 was under 10mb looking at the Rom files actual hardware size could have been about 54mb according to google and that's regarded in the top teir of platform games to this day compared to other equally as good games of the same time crash 216mb and Spyro 301mb

TheEroica815d ago (Edited 815d ago )

7 downvotes?

NotoriousWhiz815d ago

Probably because the comment, while true, isn't relevant to the article. (See: @FallenAngel's response)

Neonridr814d ago

yeah, I realize that my comment didn't really have much to do with the article. I clarified in my second post.

GotGame818817d ago

The file size is 18.4 GB. Anyone who plays Switch a lot, likely have memory cards. They are cheap now. I bought a 128GB SD card for my Switch, on sale for around $10. I will upgrade to a larger one when Switch 2 comes out.

Snookies12816d ago (Edited 816d ago )

Be wary of those cheap cards with a lot of space... I got one for like $20 on sale and it was defective. It started acting like I didn't even have the SD card inserted when trying to start up digital games.

closed_account816d ago

did you buy a reputable brand like SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston or some random no-name cheapo? I've never had an issue with a MicroSD from any of those brands, and all 3 of those can regularly be found for cheap prices.

Anyways, this article is dumb because in 2023, large MicroSD are so incredibly cheap. Just a 2 min Amazon search shows a 512gb SanDisk for $46.Zelda at 18gb would still leave a huge amount of room on that card. If you are brand new to the Switch, you can get by with 128gb for $15 or less. The author of this article should be happy that Nintendo didn't go with proprietary cards. I remember paying over $100 for 64gb imported from Japan for PS Vita, bc they didn't even make them in the west.

Snookies12816d ago (Edited 816d ago )

@OtterX - I should have structured my comment a bit differently. I was talking about being wary of the random name brands. But in my case, it was in fact a SanDisk.

FIELDMARSHALL_P815d ago (Edited 815d ago )

Came to say this lol I got a card when I got the switch I knew I would need it between the games I wanted to play and all the crap my kids like.

eagle21817d ago

They act like a physical version is not launching for those who don't have space for digital. And like GotGame818 said, memory is cheaper now. May 12, 2023 baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's gooooo! :)

XxINFERNUSxX816d ago (Edited 816d ago )

The bigger problem is the price for digital and physical are the same, which clearly it should not be. Digital should always be cheaper, with physical you are actually paying for the cart, case, & insert which does increase the cost. Digital should always be at least $10.00 cheaper.

neutralgamer1992816d ago

That's the problem with digital in general. Prices are the same for some weird reason

andy85816d ago

Physical is actually more expensive in the UK which is messed up. RRP is normally the same but most stores never charge that

Knushwood Butt816d ago

@ andy

It's the same in Japan. I almost never buy digital day one, especially if physical is an alternative.

CantThinkOfAUsername815d ago

30% cut on any major digital store is one reason.

FallenAngel1984816d ago (Edited 816d ago )

Physical games wouldn’t get stocked by retailers if digital games were always the cheaper option

MadLad816d ago

Guess it won't be taking much space up on my PC then.

I argue that simple res/FPS bumps should be free, and then you can charge $10 if it includes actual extra content. That seems to be what has been settled on.

Many PS4 games got free upgrades for PS5 when just increasing res/FPS. Days Gone, for example, got a free FPS bump to start the generation. Now it's getting a "remaster", improved visuals/extra modes/content for $10.

I know they have *some* free upgrades - though we don't know what they entail - but the Zelda games just seem like they know they can get money from eager new buyers, so why not. Zelda Notes doesn't quite seem to justify $10, but hey, let us choose. Make it a $10 app, and give the res/FPS upgrades for free.

CrashMania34d ago

Weird the Jamboree pack being 20 with no new boards or minigames for party mode, way to miss the mark. Minigame variety is seriously lacking for the party mode compared to superstars, my biggest issue with the game, think I'll pass on that.

L3e34d ago

I wonder if there will be supply issues (unable to find the system). Interesting that they are launching in the middle of the year as well.

gold_drake34d ago

some of these are abit pricey.
like why?

neutralgamer199233d ago

It's Nintendo they know they can get away with it. Bits that simple

Dhika33d ago

Why the differences in prices?

2020s - The Decade of Bloated Masterpieces

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Halfway into the decade and the 2020s has been an interesting one for gaming in both good ways and bad, with the restructuring of the industry, a mix of innovation and the same old, and of course many, many long waits. But there have also been many quality titles, to be sure; the last three years in particular have seen a number of critical darlings. Something the most acclaimed ones have had in common (with the obvious exception of Astro Bot) has been an absolutely massive scope, easily boasting 100+ hours of content.

In my own experience that massive amount of content hasn’t always been a positive; in fact I would go so far as to call their slightly overeager strive for quantity a shared flaw of these games. I’ll be looking at four titles in particular here and going over the different ways in which these otherwise solid experiences became victims of having just a bit too much fluff."

To much unimportant content and bloat is mote likely to cause me to stop playing or never revisit it. Especially when it feels like you're forcing the player to do side quests to pad out your game length just to make it long enough so you won't have the player trade the game in to fast

One recent example for me is Hogwarts I enjoyed the story but despised the level gating there was no real reason to lock missions behind a leveling system it was just forcing the player to fly around doing side quests and puzzles so they could advance to the next chapter

gold_drake74d ago

omg hogwarts

i love every second of it but damn, does it feel like a chore to play haha.

scorpio_204974d ago

Hogwarts Legacy should have stuck to what other games couldn’t do: Let us be a Hogwarts student. The open world aspect was just like any Ubisoft game.

attilayavuzer74d ago

Honestly wish it had more of a Bully feel. It was clear that 90% of the attention went to the school and town and the rest felt like the northern chunk of Just Cause 3's map. Almost like they had to justify the flying mechanic by spreading things out.

Profchaos74d ago

Yeah agree the Hogwarts castle and grounds is ripe for exploration. Look at the PS1 Argonaut game i felt like that old game did a better job with relaying what it's like to be a student at Hogwarts than what legacy did.

Legacy was like ok you've done a few classes learnt to ride a broom go spend the next multitude of hours exploring nearby towns and killing hundreds of goblins and spiders I don't think they did enough with the school grounds.

I appreciate them including Hogsmeade but I felt like it didn't need to expand past that point

SimpleDad74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

Why don't we have more 12-15h single player stories for $45 is beyond me.

Profchaos74d ago

My guess is I recall around the late 2000s game trades were a big issue which resulted in publishers shifting away from standard single player campaigns that could be beaten in a month and we started to see more expansive open worlds that would take longer to see everything to keep the player invested long enough that they wouldn't trade in the game when it was going to be the most profitable retail window e.g the first month

With the rise of all digital games I can see those games making a comeback as there is no second hand market

I_am_Batman74d ago

Expecting a 12-15h game to be $45 is part of the problem. These games don't sell well at full price anymore and relatively speaking it takes a lot fewer resources to stretch it into a 30-40 hour game that can be sold for full price.

We can complain about padding all we want, but most people simply pay more for padded games.

thorstein74d ago

Eternal Strands $48. 18 hours

Citizen Sleeper 2 $23 10 hours.

AstroBot (got as a gift) 16 hours and they keep adding levels.

CantThinkOfAUsername74d ago

Totally agree. I'm tired of the same bloated fluff that games present as 'content.'

anast74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

BG Act III is dense. It's the opposite of bloat.

andy8574d ago

Act 3 is massive. I think I finished the game 4 times for the platinum and I know I must have missed at least half the stuff in that city

anast74d ago

There is some much unique content in that ACT.

gold_drake74d ago

i feel like Rebirth only really had Costa del sol as a bloat. but its a long game, so i dont blame the author

Once they give us Master Mode I'll replay it.

OtterX85d ago

Only because the inevitable Remaster will launch on the Switch 2 this Fall.

SoloGamer185d ago

no thanks...Nintendo is notorious for poorly designed dungeons/temples etc...and the recent Zelda games are no exception.

Inverno85d ago

I'd argue it'd be better to give BoTW another go. BoTW was better imo *shrugs*

jznrpg85d ago

I own it but I didn’t get far into it. Maybe someday
