Why PSVR 2 is Better Than Quest 2

Better hardware and a handful of exclusive games make it an obvious winner, at least for now.

Skeptics might hold off on the PSVR 2 because of its current library of games, but the truth is it's only just getting started. Right now the majority of games coming out for PSVR 2 are ports of existing VR games, but the few you cannot get on the Quest 2 are well worth the investment if you're interested in VR. Resident Evil Village is an amazing VR experience, and one that’s only on PSVR 2 right now. Some of the games you might’ve already played on Quest 2 are further enhanced thanks to PSVR 2’s OLED display and PS5’s hardware.

PlayStation has major plans for the PSVR 2 and I’m sure game devs will take advantage of its capabilities. So if you’re passionate about VR, or are just plain curious about how far virtual reality has come, PSVR 2 is the best experience. PlayStation has single-handedly made me excited about the future of games in VR, and I’ll be slipping on the headset every time a new release comes out.

Let's be real. The tech in the Quest 2 is awesome. Wireless VR gaming. Has features like pass through, hand tracking and a good selection of indie games. Overall a decent price too.

I'm not going to say that this is better than that. Because both are awesomely created devices. My thing is who's behind the devices that makes the difference.

Facebook created multiple devices and abandoned the previous ones. Most don't know that Quest 2 doesn't play Go games. A large selection of VR games dropped. They updated with pass through and hand tracking and made no games for that. They demoed room scale games but never made any for release. They released Quest Pro controllers compatible with Quest 2 but launched with no games to support those $300 dollar controllers. Is everyone getting what I'm saying? A severe lack of software from in-house which is why Quest Pro bombed. Huge software problem. Not only that, but Quest 2 can't play games that came out on PSVR for the last 7 years like Hitman 3, Skyrim, Borderlands, LA Noire, etc. The tech has limits. To equal Sony, you'd have to buy a powerful PC that costs more than PS5 and PS VR 2.

I've said it before elsewhere. Sony has 25 years in the business with multiple third party connections. They have killer in-house studios that are award winning. They have in their back catalog, more franchises than any other VR headset maker to put games in VR. Combine them all and they don't compare from Facebook, Valve, HTC, ByteDance, etc. None of them have Spider-Man or Insomniac. They have built-in game features. No tracking your face for social VR. Game features. Total focus on games. Not advertising. Not a lacking virtual world. Just games.

If I were to bet on the company that will provide a long list of high quality VR games, that was able to get Bethesda, Rockstar, Rocksteady, IO, ID Software, Ubisoft, EA, From, Capcom, Namco, etc to make games or experiences for PSVR, with only 5 million headsets sold, it just would have to be Sony. Quest has supposedly sold around 20 million. Where's the big games? Where's the in-house games?

After launch, your going to see that Sony has more games coming. Look at the facts and see that one's a game company. The other is a social media company waiting to gather our data for advertising. The choice is clear. If we're being real about it.

"but Quest 2 can't play games that came out on PSVR for the last 7 years like Hitman 3, Skyrim, Borderlands, LA Noire, etc. The tech has limits."

But nether can the PSVR 2...

Not natively but via the cable or via wireless play with a ~£700 medium spec PC (making the cost the same as a PSVR 2/PS5 combo) you can play all those games comfortably on Quest 2.

Eidolon837d ago (Edited 837d ago )

700 might be doable. I personally have not had a good PCVR experience with Quest 2. Then assuming you got everything running smoothly(and I still think fps drops and stutter will always be a thing for non-native VR), still have that compression. It's great that I can just plug in the PSVR2 with 1 cable, turn on the controllers and start a game.

SullysCigar837d ago

Never use 'comfortably' and Quest in the same sentence lol

I can promise you that using the same money for a PC/Quest combo won't get you anywhere close to the same experience as PS5/PSVR2. The wireless tethering is okay *sometime*, but generally laggy and glitchy. They've pushed that tech too soon in my opinion.

Quest 2 for mobile fun and to keep the kids quiet, PSVR2 for premium VR. There's a place for both, but should also factor in the hidden costs of Quest 2, like overpirced and poorly made straps to make playing for more than 20mins possible, battery upgrades to make over 1hr30 possible. All this before factoring in that you're giving money to Facebook - (Sideshow Bob shudder).

I was also meaning the Quest 2 VR Link Cable which although is wired, means you can then play the Steam VR games that AShadow was talking about. I appreciate the experience won't be as good as native PSVR 2 gaming, but at least the library is there for the taking unlike SONY's walled-garden approach.

ApocalypseShadow836d ago

So, basically you agree that Quest stand alone can't play games from 7 years ago that launched on PSVR and to this day.

Thanks for playing.

Quest 2(128gb at $289 in early 2022) has been the better value for me, personally, that's only considering I got my games free, though. Not considering PCVR because I only recently got wired Link working semi-decently, and wireless PCVR is kind of a shitshow for Virtual Desktop, but better on Air Link.

I had to return the PSVR2 for a slight defect and because my brain/eyes could not filter out the mura after like 30hrs of usage, just one of the unlucky few. Everything worked solidly besides a few tracking issues which might be solved with firmware later. Haptics were great, not so surprising on the controllers as it was for the headset. And eye-tracking was impressive, that gaze-tracking on H:CotM was cool and I could see it being used in more games in the future. Already spent like $100 on games, Pavlov was my first and had a blast, Pistol Whip was solid as well..

Eidolon837d ago

$550. But wireless you get a subpar experience(to native), and you only tolerate the downsides(compression, stutter, frame inconsistency) like people are with the mura on PSVR2. Single wire, no hassle with drivers or hardware configurations, settings, OS and software incompatibility, etc.

Eidolon837d ago

You're not wrong, it is $550, and it is wired.

Brando Benjamin did a comparison video. Even using a 4090 the psvr2 was fairly evenly matched. check it out.

That's meant to read "beardo benjo" bloody autocorrect ffs lol

Eidolon837d ago (Edited 837d ago )

Yeah, 4090 with a Quest 2, which is limited by 150mbps(tops 300mbps, which is up for debate), not really sure how much better it can get with beefier GPU's passed a point because compression is just too limiting. PSVR2 looks much better than games running on Quest 2 PCVR on my 3060ti, at least with whatever settings I have(still tweaking). SteamVR home( the home environment when launching SteanVR on Quest 2 Link) actually looks pretty close to PSVR2 ngl, but I'm not sure how it works because it wasn't frame-limited by my Nvidia setting and somehow looks better than most games.

Lol, maybe I'm becoming an old fart, but excessive violence in VR seems to bother me more than in flat games. Feels more visceral when you're looking a person in the eyes before mutilating them.

By no means am I trying to be a prude and saying these games shouldn't exist. I just play them more sparingly, need more breaks. I need some beautiful, refreshing & relaxing VR experiences too to balance them out so I don't feel so heavy.
