Activision Revenue in 2022: PlayStation Accounted for 13%, Microsoft Numbers Too Low to Register

Activision's latest SEC filing reveals that PlayStation accounted for 13% of revenue in 2022, while Microsoft's was too low it didn't even register.

crazyCoconuts836d ago

Activision chose to not report numbers under 10%. They were at 11% a few years ago. It's not too low "to register". This is just how Activision choose to do their reporting for what I'm sure is a specific reason...

lelo2play836d ago

Honestly, I though Playstation would accounted for more then 13%.

38% from mobile gaming is a lot.

FinalFantasyFanatic836d ago

I was think closer to a quarter or a third, then again, everyone owns a mobile, even if it's mostly casuals using it for gaming.

shinoff2183835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

That diablo mobile game just came out last year right? I dont know why mobile would be so much but like someone said everyone and they mom got a smart phone

Shane Kim835d ago

They also have lots of ads running in mobile games. Don't know If that revenue counts towards mobile though.

anubusgold835d ago

@lelo2play And world of warcraft classic servers have a 5 hour wait time each time a expansion comes out as well and thats 15 dollars a month for each user.

These guys are all liars I tell you. I hope the FTC does its job right for once. They never win these, but if and when MS’s acquisition goes through, the gaming space will be a much smaller place. They will deprive half of gamers from games they used to enjoy as multiplatform. Its really shady business.

thesoftware730836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

Wow, that was dramatic, you need some background music when you say that.

My man 13% is not 1/2 of gamers, you just left out MS, Nintendo(who will now be added to the pie) Steam, Geforce now, Windows and mobile.

Also, you should tell Sony to sign the contract, and then see what happens in 10 years.

343_Guilty_Spark836d ago

Yep Candy Crush exclusivity confirmed.

S2Killinit835d ago

Thesoftware730
The only background music needed is wa wa waaa once people realize what this will do to this industry. Get ready for the walled gardens bro. Its coming. I hope people cheering MS enjoy it when the shoe is on the other foot.

Playstation is more than half of console gamers. Unless you Want to include mobile gaming?

rlow1836d ago

If the sale goes through and MS puts the “game that must not be named” on everything I wonder how this will affect Sonys numbers?
What as more surprising was how mobile sales outpaced everything else.

porkChop836d ago

Both Candy Crush and COD Mobile bring in a ton of money every year on iOS and Android. We can see a clear trend of mobile becoming more and more important for Activision, and we see the opposite for console. MS dropped to below the 10% threshold. Even Sony dropped from 17% to just 13% in 2 years. Between Apple and Google, mobile jumped up 9%. That's crazy growth.

crazyCoconuts836d ago

It is. And it's mind boggling how much money a simple game like candy crush can bring in. Given how much was spent in building it, it's gotta be one of the biggest success stories.
Talk about lightening in a bottle though, replicating that success with another game would be super difficult

Godmars290836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

Only COD's already on "everything". Everything that can run it.

To put, make it available on literally everything MS's going to have to rely on streaming, which after all this time and hype is still unproven tech.

Just realized they're trying to sell on the "potential" of what something can do before they've fully developed it and know that it can actual work. At what level it works.

shinoff2183835d ago

Actually thinking about it its really not surprising at all. Mobile has one of the largest install bases of anything in the world besides like people using electricity.

MrDead836d ago

Sony's their biggest console platform, was the same with Bethesda games too.

Skyrim Special Edition. (first week sales)
PlayStation 4 589,449
Xbox One. 349,285

Fallout 4 (first week sales)
PlayStation 4. 3,010,966
Xbox One. 1,729,944

Now with Gamespass Bethesda games need to find a new revenue stream, otherwise bye, bye.

"Xbox Game Pass damages game sales and causes a decline in base sales of a game both new and old. So much so that the company itself claims “Xbox Game Pass will lead to a cannibalization of Buy-to-Play sales.”

Obscure_Observer836d ago

"Now with Gamespass Bethesda games need to find a new revenue stream, otherwise bye, bye."

Don´t worry, Xbox got Bethesda´s back covered.

https://www.dualshockers.co...

https://store.steampowered....

MrDead836d ago

... you do know if MS hadn't purchased Bethesda those games would have had the revenue from Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. I'm sorry understand how sales and money work, and now like I said Bethesda now need to find a new revenue stream.

mkis007836d ago

Did you not understand what he was saying or something? Any game that Xbox doesn't release on PlayStation is going to tank vs previous entries... that's an uphill battle taking away your number one earner.

Crows90836d ago

@mrdead

Don't bother with observer. He'll never complain about a single timed PlayStation exclusive in the future. Especially since he has no problem with what Microsoft has been doing since it is his console choice. If it was the other way around obviously this would be a different story and he wouldn't be happy at all but because it his console of choice he's perfectly fine with a purchase of popular third party IP. The moments he complains about another time to exclusive for time anything He's the biggest hypocrite of all.

Whereas the majority of PlayStation fans have had an issue with any kind of time to exclusivity that's not a real exclusive and even claiming something is exclusive while releasing it on another platform. This specific fan doesn't care at all as long as it's on his console of choice.

Chevalier836d ago

Observer more blind than observant. Doesn't realize that 40-50 Bethesda revenue came from Playstation. So now their games will end up with even LESS revenue since gamepass has dropped tanked game sales.

Add idiot who thinks dropping a game from Playstation and Nintendo who collectively have 270 million consoles available between the 2 wouldn't affect sales has their green blinders on. Skyrim released on 9 platforms 5 versions between Playstation and Nintendo (PS3, PS4, PS5, PSVR and Switch). So Skyrim at 30+ million effective drop that by 50% minimum.

Obscure_Observer836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

@mkis007

"that's an uphill battle taking away your number one earner."

Not with Nintendo and NVidia 150 Million playerbase.

@Crows90

"The moments he complains about another time to exclusive for time anything He's the biggest hypocrite of all."

Lol. I don´t care about Playstation timed-exclusives at all. Already beat all of it´s remaster/remakes many years ago. KOTOR, FFVII, Silent Hill 2 on both original Xbox and PS2.

My only issue concerns on allegations of Sony´s shady practices to keep multiplatform games off Xbox forever, which we might found out if its true or not, soon!

darkrider836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

But ther numbers can't be compared with consoles.

Forsopken sold very well its on all charts everywhere..

shinoff2183835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

Thats fine that hi fi did better then forspoken but its still released on one less console due to bethsada being owned by ms. It was missed on the console where the gamers have proven time and time again we buy games.

Exactly Crow

I prefer sony because their first party and variety. It cant be beat imo, maybe nintendo but with them the first party can be hit or miss for me. Hell I actually owned a dreamcast and xbox og before ps2. I had borrowed a ps1 back in the day before all that and was hyped but as I became an adult My first bought console was dreamcast

Godmars290835d ago

@mkis007:
" Any game that Xbox doesn't release on PlayStation is going to tank vs previous entries..."

More like, when compared to former non-Gamepass Xbox, Bethesda looses over half of what they could have made with a full multiplatform title.

MS playing a dangerous game, might not go as they planned. They want that 10 year planned on cod so they get the money from Sony to recoup. Sony be like na we dont want it on our system to help support you. No one actually jumps on xbox just to play cod and the player counts just drops and thats how CoD died.

VenomUK836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

@blackblades Sony dropping Call of Duty after the Microsoft purchase? That’s an interesting idea based on the possibility that CoD’s popularity might not be eternal. Whilst it seems unlikely it reminds me of what happened with video game football. For a long time Konami’s ISS reigned supreme with playability and always had the best review scores, whilst Fifa was the ugly stepchild. But over time for multiple reasons ISS was forgotten and Fifa became king. Now if Xbox Game Pass becomes the only place to play the full powered home version of CoD yes some people will migrate to Game Pass. But a big part of the draw of Call of Duty is that it is the event game of the year on PlayStation. If Sony is able to find a high quality replacement, a very difficult IF, then it could possibly create a massive demand and player base for that and in the process Call of Duty would lose some relevance by being only available on Xbox.

blackblades836d ago

@VenomUK Titan fall was most similar to Cod because it was former devs of Cod worked on it but seeing how that went thats a no. Other then that its battlefield but gameplay wise it would also be a no. Next up would have to be a medal of honor rebooted from the ashes and heavily marketed. I also say that wouldn't work it'll take a miracle to bring back people from being brainwashed by CoD.

FGHFGHFGH835d ago

@VenomUK

How much life does call of duty have left? They are already remaking modern warfare and before that was Call of Duty Vanguard? I think that one saw like a 50% reduction in player base. 10 years ago HALO was a top selling ip

onisama836d ago

first GP is not free its their main business now..
2nd why should we care about this? as long as the games keeps coming to GP and sold in stores i dont care whatever profit me im for it

MrDead836d ago

With the money spread thin because of games pass where do you think investment for new games is going to come from? Bethesda had PC, Xbox and PlayStation, now it only has PC paying full price, on Xbox they have to share the pool of cash with every other studio... and CEO and shareholders, and if they don't get their money we've seen what happens, job cuts in Microsofts least profitable and no/low growth areas one of which is Xbox.

Not to mention what consolidation like this does to an industry.

onisama836d ago

@mrdead

they get funded by microsoft their owner who get the money from gamepass...bathesda isnt getting profit now they get salaries for working for microsoft..i dont know were is the problem?

poeple dont know how much gamepass is making and how its been menaged or how it works...but use this to hate on xbox because its the trend? i see hifi rush as good exemple of what gamepass can do, a shadow drop would never be a thing without GP, you can complain the hole day but bathesda is in good care

onisama836d ago

@mrdead

and hey i hope sony will spend some of that money in making PS+ better instead of paying millions to block games from GP

MrDead835d ago

Wow, please do a little research before committing and look what happens to low performing sectors at Microsoft, which Xbox is one... Why do you think Xbox was one of the areas chosen for job cuts when MS was trying to keep its stock price from falling?

... also I have no hate for Xbox, I save it for Microsoft, the company that in it's own words is cannibalising game sales.

shinoff2183835d ago

onisama thats short sighted because if things dont go as good as they want profit wise then big changes would be coming.

Nah, according to the usual suspects here, Gamepass subscribers buy 10 extra copies of games on gamepass because reasons, so I think they're good.

"I'm sorry understand how sales and money work, and now like I said Bethesda now need to find a new revenue stream."

I told you, Xbox already have it, they don´t need PS5´s 30million playerbase, dude.

Bethesda games will be available on Xbox Series consoles, PC, Gamepass, PC Gamepass and more devices via XCloud.

PC Gamepass just got expanded to more than 40 countries and in the future, Xbox games will be available on Nintendo´s consoles and NVidia.

With Nintendo and NVidia support alone, Xbox games will reach more than 150 Million gamers worldwide. Like I said; Xbox doesn´t need the Playstation userbase at all!

I just brought you the facts. If you still in denial, well... that´s your problem.

onisama836d ago (Edited 836d ago )

They dont want to hear that because this will break their dreams of the noblility of sony

onisama836d ago

They beleive that gamepass is hurting games and devolopers put their games on gamepass at a lost... Which is insane its like microsoft is carrying a gun and shooting devs if they dont sign a contract.... And even morr they think xbox number define xbox profits which is wrong as gamepass is on pc too, gamepass is the future anf its gaming on a budget those rich wanna be on this site aren't living in the real world were more than 100 million gamers are in average countries or third world countries that are profiting from GP and if not for GP they will be pirating games as simple as that im living outside my country and we have huge gaming community back home but they cant afford buying games and now they play on gamepass (including die hard ps fanboys that in a fun way cursing xbox and say how great ps5 is but play on xbox because they are broke lol)

Either that or they invest in midtier pc and torrent the hell out of it

SoulWarrior836d ago

'I told you, Xbox already have it, they don´t need PS5´s 30million playerbase, dude.'

Sure, they may not 'need' that revenue stream when they are bankrolled by windows money since their games don't sell as shown by recent MS comments, guess you'll agree that SE and Capcom don't need the Xbox revenue stream then since it accounts for so little.

'Bethesda games will be available on Xbox Series consoles, PC, Gamepass, PC Gamepass and more devices via XCloud'

That's a really bloated of way of just saying Xbox and PC, games that were coming to those platforms anyway lol. Guess I'll start saying games are on PS and PS+ to inflate numbers as well.

'With Nintendo and NVidia support alone, Xbox games will reach more than 150 Million gamers worldwide. Like I said; Xbox doesn´t need the Playstation userbase at all!'

Must have missed the announcement that Nintendo are having Xbox games on Switch, unless you're referring to only that flimsy 'contract' (when they don't even own the IP yet), you make it sound like Nintendo are close to having gamepass on their platform, unlike MS they don't need to give away games for pennies to gain adoption these days, they don't want or need it and never have.

MrDead835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

In Microsofts own words Games pass is cannibalising game sales, you think expanding Games pass reach is going to make that better buy even less people buying games?!?!

"With Nintendo and NVidia support alone, Xbox games will reach more than 150 Million gamers worldwide."

Why do you think this deal hasn't already happened if it so lucrative to Activision's finances?

"I just brought you the facts. If you still in denial, well... that´s your problem."

Child, you're as fact filled as fox news.

shinoff2183835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

Theres nothing fact wise their though gamepass being brought to more then 40 countries doesnt mean much if it dont translate to sales and thats yet to be seen. Whatever nintendo does next doesnt mean there console will be able to run most of the bethsada games. Hasnt gamepass been available on pc, gamepass doesnt help sales what so ever if everyones using it for the games.

Throwing nvidia support in there is just another environment on pc so it doesnt need to be stated since you already stated pc.

Gaming is lead by game sales period. That will never change, if games aint selling platform is doing bad. Which xbox has proven with them being disappointed in the numbers.

onisama do you have any links or anything for what your spewing. Also not everyone on PlayStation is rich, I just support my hobby. MS has shown those on its platform dont with game sales. Ill bring up ff for the 5th time. FF15 in the uk sold 80 percent on ps4 and 20 percent on xbox. Thats a problem.

Knushwood Butt835d ago

If MS is already making a killing with GP, by releasing practically no first party games on it, and the userbase is over the moon with the current service, then what business reason does MS have to fund multiple AAA games and studios?

I watched that Senua 2 developer video. Trips to Iceland to rebuild the landscape in the game. Looks hella expensive, and I wonder what that will bring to the gameplay.

Obscure_Observer834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

@Knushwood Butt

"If MS is already making a killing with GP, by releasing practically no first party games on it, and the userbase is over the moon with the current service, then what business reason does MS have to fund multiple AAA games and studios?"

Do you remember when people used to say:

- With Gamepass, the quality first party games from Xbox Games Studios will only get worse!
- Xbox Game Studios will ruin their new first party studios.
- Gamepass will be filled with low budge and indie games because it´s no sustainable.

Even Jim Ryan said something between those lines

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

Do you think Phil Spencer is not aware of all of that? The strategy is pretty simple really. The whole idea behind of quality AAA development at Xbox, is to make gamers question themselves which platform offers the best games for less. I mean, why would I pay $70 for PS5 games if I can get better games paying less for a subscription on Gamepass where I can play multiple quality games?

"I watched that Senua 2 developer video. Trips to Iceland to rebuild the landscape in the game. Looks hella expensive, and I wonder what that will bring to the gameplay."

More realism, fidelity and immersion. Both Melina Jurgens and the team wants to experience the real thing and bring all they learned about Iceland to the game.

It´s their first real AAA project with no restrictions of any kind, be that time, money, technology, manpower, resources... etc

Xbox want to make sure that Ninja Theory will have everything they need to deliver their vision and take Senua to a whole new level.

Game Pass is its own revenue stream. If 25M people pay $180 per year for Game Pass, Microsoft makes $4.5B per year. Unless your game is GTA, that makes up for a lot of last game sales.

shinoff2183835d ago

Apperently that isnt the case cause ms isnt happy with what they are getting with so far

MrDead835d ago

...did you just times $180 by 25 million and think, yep that's how business works, all profit!

MrNinosan835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

No one here pays 180$ for GamePass.
If anyone is stupid enough to pay it a full year, it's most likely through all the tips and trix and freebies MS is throwing on us, to pretend they've sold GPU for 180$ to you.

I never pay more than 1-2$ for GPU/month.

Knushwood Butt835d ago

So GP 'makes' 4.5B a year, and there are no operating costs or taxation. Wow, licence to print money.

That’s not bad considering there were significantly more PS in the wild.

thesoftware730836d ago

You keep posting that quote lol.

It's actually funny that after all this time, you don't see its GP subs MS are chasing. Posting the "Cannibalize" sales quote as some sort of bash is silly, they don't care, they want $15 every month from people. raising that 30million users is what they are looking to do.

purple101835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

Then they raise the price and see subscriptions drop? ( A true possibility, where people with high income, can afford to pay an increase price, but the lower-income people can't, so they end up revieving the same amount of revenue in total, but a smaller percent of the population can access the games, but again, Microsoft would get the same revenue, so they wouldn't care, )

Then developers also have less incentives to produce high rated / award winning games, because they're getting paid anyway

darkrider836d ago

Bethesda is done on consoles. Got the pc market. They will lose billions. No Microsoft will lose billions because of not being where it sells more.

thesoftware730836d ago

No, No, that is not how that works.

When you are acquired by a company, you have all the resources that that company provides, you don't have to look for a new revenue stream, its all under the same umbrella. The only way "bye bye"(so silly) is if MS gaming divisions shuts down, other than that, they are MS and MS are them.

MrDead835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

No, Xbox is a division of Microsoft, and guess what happens to divisions that don't hit targets and have low to no growth, they get cut.
We've already seen that this year with Xbox as Microsoft made cuts because Azure revenue is lower than expected causing a drop in Microsoft share price, that resulted in cuts at Xbox as they are expendable arm of MS because of the little to no growth on the platform.

Obscure_Observer835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

"In Microsofts own words Games pass is cannibalising game sales, you think expanding Games pass reach is going to make that better buy even less people buying games?!?!"

Because Microsoft will obviously make more revenue out Gamepass subscribers, son.

With higher revenue and cash flow provided by MAU, MS can offer better upfront payments and marketing promotions as incentive to developers put their games on Gamepass while leaving those developers free to release their games on any and as many platforms they want, just like the recent Atomic Heart and Wo Long. Still don´t get it? It´s a win win scenario for developers, really.

"Why do you think this deal hasn't already happened if it so lucrative to Activision's finances?"

Because different leadership, different policies. Just look at Nintendo under the late Satoru Iwata and now under Shuntaro Furukawa´s leadership.

Under Microsoft, Bobby Kotick will no longer call the shots and Nintendo will be a partner for Xbox.

"Child, you're as fact filled as fox news."

Not offended. I know its hard for you to understand, so I don´t expect you to comprehend and accept reality as it is. All of the Bethesda IPs now belongs to Microsoft and just like Sony, the vast majority of it will be exclusive to Xbox ecosystem which as I shown you, has a much bigger and wider potential to reach hundred of millions of gamers via Gamepass, PC, Xbox consoles, XCloud on cellphones, tablets and Samsung TVs.

If you´re expecting Starfield to be a flop like Forspoken just because it will not be available on PS5, I think you should brace yourself for some major disappointment and trauma.

I´m not the one qualified to advice people on how they should deal with anxiety issues, so, to continue and be in denial is certainly up to you.

MrDead835d ago (Edited 835d ago )

Obscure_Observer835d ago
