Square Enix is merging with Luminous imo we all saw this coming.

sparky77853d ago

If Forespoken was a success this wouldn't have happened.

SE needs to be careful with the deals with Sony since it could cause the death of their company, if FF16 fails I fully expect them merging with Tencent.

tay8701852d ago

Lol they aren't going to merge with tencent. If anyone buys them it will be Sony themself

shinoff2183852d ago (Edited 852d ago )

Square enix has released enough games on the xbox to know their gamers aint buying. Whatever deal sony offered them had to be worth it for them to say yep. Its not like square has ignored the xbox altogether yall have had numerous games from square.

Id say you want the games BUY them dont just wait for gamepass

darkrider852d ago

Dude, a merge like this doesn't happend in day or week.... Forspoken is selling well and it's on the charts.

Nope, they don't need, because square games sell millions on Sony machine. Where they don't sell is on Microsoft machines and square learn that with they accepted money for Tomb raider be exclusive on Xbox. A huge franchise that was an instant flop.

ziggyzinfirion852d ago

Forspoken actually sold well.

kingnick852d ago

Here's hoping FFXVI is a success.

I'd hate to see Japanese developers/publishers getting bought by Tencent and other Chinese companies en masse.

Obscure_Observer851d ago

@tay8701

"If anyone buys them it will be Sony themself"

That would be great. But Sony is not too kin to buy studios that fails to deliver quality games. If FFXVI flops, it will be third game in a roll that fails to meet Sony´s expectations along Babylon´s Fall and Forspoken.

SE will be on their own.

No, other way around, Luminous is being merged into Square (It's owner)...

Stanjara852d ago

Darkrider - Forspoken failed by SE standards and they canned creatives and merged development team and the rest of the staff to Square.
They owned them either way, but they gave a chance to brainiacs to create their own name and studio, which they failed.

You father gives you a car, then he sees you driving, then he takes the keys and says: You're not ready.

kingnick852d ago

Yep.

It's still a bit sad as this'll likely mean less creative freedom in future.

FinalFantasyFanatic851d ago

No surprise, Square-Enix sets stupidly high sales expectations for their games, so even if they sell okay, they consider it a flop unless it absolutely rakes in the dough.

XiNatsuDragnel854d ago

Nice so another merger from sqe?

XiNatsuDragnel854d ago (Edited 854d ago )

All they going to be Luminous Square Enix?

BandarHub853d ago

One of the many objectives for Square is to focus on things they are good at and are known for.
No one wants a game made for the western market like Forespoken. I am glad they sold the rights to Tomb Raider, Hitman and De Deus Ex.

Take From Software, they know exactly what they are good at and they capitalize on it. When I get their games I know exactly what I am getting.
It should be the same for square Enix, I want to play great JRPG whether it turn-based to action RPG.

kingnick852d ago (Edited 852d ago )

If Forspoken had of been delayed and a better managed development cycle it could have been a far better game.

Hopefully SE learn from Forspoken and their latter games don't repeat the same mistakes.

I don't think SE should be a one trick pony but at the same time they weren't developing the Tomb Raider and other IPs they owned themselves so it did make some sense to sell the IPs off.

FinalFantasyFanatic851d ago (Edited 851d ago )

"Hopefully SE learn from Forspoken and their latter games don't repeat the same mistakes. "

Idk if they will learn, this seems to be a trend for them the past decade where they just have messy development or project management. I would like to see a return to form for them at some point though, if it ever happens.

BandarHub851d ago

That's what I don't understand.
They won't be a one trick pony. Jrpg is an umbrella term for many types of games e.g turn based, tactical turn base, action hack and slash and many more.

Take a look at Atlus with there studios, the SMT series, persona, soul hackers....all of them jrpg.

From software
With the soulsborne series

They know we'll what they are good at.
There is no reason to make a game westernised like forspoken

VersusDMC852d ago

From what i played from the demo Luminous have a talented team on the game and engine side of things...they just need a new creative team. If Valkyrie Elysium looked like forespoken i would have bought it.

Hopefully a Japanese creative team is given the reigns this time...best case scenario they work on the next Nier with Yoko Taro.

Because Nintendo makes great games.

Yesyes1d 8h ago

It’s unreal that people are downvoting this when they consistently have the best scoring games on metacritic.

rlow12d ago

Well it doesn’t surprise me. As much money as they make and how they value their employees. It’s a great company in that regard.

Well, when your games remain full price many years after release.

And you make profit off of outdated hardware.

I would be shocked if they couldn't afford to retain their staff.

lodossrage1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I didn't want to say anything but drivxr is right.

Nintendo always sells at a profit because they purposely use tech that's always 5 or more years behind. And it's also true their games hardly ever get price decreases.

Don't get me wrong, it's great they kept most of their workforce, but making a point to have your tech specs behind everyone else affords that luxury.

Darkegg1d 19h ago

I don’t think it’s their purpose to use old tech. It’s their purpose to make value of software and know their value. Nobody makes games like them that’s for sure. I just don’t appreciate their customer unfriendly policy.

It’s not impossible to take their status. Companies need to have a selection of 8-bit and 16-bit. Now imagine a split screen for 8 player game for SNES Mario kart and selling at $9.99. The problem is that it doesn’t make profit. So many companies won’t invest in “old” technology. Everyone guns for triple AAA modern technology software but honestly we can enjoy modernized 16-bit creative ideas that allows 8-player mayhem. It’s a pipe dream, possible but impossible.

Shane Kim1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

If they ended up kicking people out after all of that stated above, it would be truly shameful.

DivineHand1251d 16h ago

Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Tesla and Meta are all trillion dollar companies yet they are laying people off in large numbers.

I believe the reason Nintendo layoffs off less workers may be a result of their culture. It seems Japanese companies believe in giving their workers long term or life long employment opportunities and will exhaust all options before laying off workers. This is something we don't see much of in the west unfortunately.

Rdeal1d 10h ago

might be something to do with the fact all those companies hire more than 20x the employees than Nintendo

LoveSpuds1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

What the hell are you talking about? It has nothing to do with how profitable they are. Its completely cultural, MS and Sony make stacks of cash and still lay folks off. Nintendo chose not to lay off staff for the same reason their execs took pay cuts to increase staff pay instead; because they value their staff and view them as colleagues, and respect them as such.

If Sony weren't so US centric I fancy they'd fare better too, they should get shot of US and European leadership and go back to when Japanese execs were running the show if you ask me!
