I played Gran Turismo 7 in PSVR 2, and now I can't go back

With well over a hundred hours in the PS5 racing sim, I thought I’d seen pretty much everything Gran Turismo 7 had to offer. But the new (and entirely free) PSVR 2 update has breathed new life into the game. And now that I’ve been sitting, literally, in the driver’s seat, I’m plenty eager to strap back in for one of the best VR experiences I’ve ever had.

PSVR 2 highlights Gran Turismo 7’s lighting. Rainy night time races are a real treat, particularly the numerous tunnels of Tokyo Expressway. Thanks to PSVR 2’s wide 110-degree field of view, you’ll actually witness these lights accurately whip past your peripheral vision, just as they would in real life.

Yeah. It's impossible to go back. It's a big step up

ApocalypseShadow794d ago

Yeah. Once you experience full immersion in a videogame, it makes regular versions feel weak.

I would never play flat Skyrim. But love VR Skyrim.

Sounds like the beginning of SAO

Umb793d ago

True, as long as you don't suffer from motion sickness.

fr0sty793d ago

apparently PSVR2 keeps frame rates high enough to where most do not.

EvertonFC793d ago

Believe it or not more people suffer from car sickness than VR

blacktiger793d ago

but motion sickness is a big deal in terms of health, hell some ppl can't get a ride, imagine that!

Neonridr793d ago

@fr0sty - that's really only a small factor. People's brains need time to adjust to what is happening, much like some people need time adjusting to boats. It can be disorienting to some and can easily make them sick. Doesn't matter if it's 90Hz or 120Hz.

I had the same problem with racing games after I got a racing wheel, in my case a g25 racing wheel, for Gran turismo 5, I have never played another racing game for more than an hour able to enjoy it. Its just lightyears beyond. Now with VR its another step.

Although 100% VR is not better for everything, its a different, new experience. For shooters its completely immerive too however....it is different, you oculdn't play, apex, cod, fortnite or any modern shooters in the same way. A controller gives you more control than your own body. However it is a great experience, to panic trying to reload you gun, at nighttime you aren't even sure if you picked up a correct magazine in some games.

When they eventually come out for PSVR, try onward/military style shooter, resident evil 4 original in VR(turns out it was perfect for VR) and a new VR Surivial horror into the radius. I have done multiple hours at a time on quest 2 and it is, eh..tiring lets say, just to have in on your face for that amount of time. But eh, well worth it. If you are a huge gamer like me and you had all consoles/find alot of games tedious and repetitve these days, VR is a breath or fresh air. Everything feels like you haven't played it before.

Also for motion sickness, call it 'weaning time'. It goes away after you get you VR legs basically, at least for me.

yeahokwhatever793d ago

I would love for some defense-style shooters on VR. Something like the original Call of Duty Zombies mode in that little house defending it with your buddies. That would be great.

SullysCigar793d ago

^ Pavlov has zombies mode - it's pretty good too!

Knushwood Butt793d ago

Isn't After the Fall a defense type shooter?

SullysCigar794d ago

Honestly, it's the same for any game. I tried to play Resident Evil 7 on TV after completing in VR, but just got bored. The atmosphere, sound, fear, depth all plummet. The graphics were better on TV, but it just didn't matter.

I went back to VR and played it twice more, unlocking new weapons, loved it!

Babadook7793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

“Honestly, it's the same for any game”

Any game that’s adapted well to vr? Yeah pretty much. I didn’t even enjoy the recent humanity demo until I switched on VR. Trying to scope out the levels with an analogue stick was so much less intuitive than looking around in VR and seeing all the complexity at a glance. I would never go back.

CrimsonWing69793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

Once you go VR you, uh… never go—ah, hell you get the point.

It’s sort of like that for me with RE8 now. Although I do like third person mode, but I’m gonna be a buck fitty with ya, I’ve never seen anything as immersive as RE8 in VR, granted I haven’t done Horizon or GT7 yet.

Bathyj793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

I'd like to see more 3rd person games in VR. Imagine last of us and you're right beside Joel and Ellie like your in the room with them.

Moss is incredible. So charming. I giggled when the mouse held up a high five for me. I did it she did a little dance and then prompted for another one.

I'd even like to try a chase cam in GT7. VR doesn't all have to be 1st person.

Echone1793d ago (Edited 793d ago )

I agree! I would also like 3rd person games in VR. Ratchet, Knack, Stray etc. would also be absolutely ideal candidates.
I just finished playing Moss book 2 (my first PSVR2 game), and an absolutely amazing adventure without the possibility of motion sickness

DaReapa793d ago

@Crimson
I've tried RE8 (at least the VR demo), and it is phenomenal. But Horizon and GT7 are on a whole other level. I've honestly only owned GT5 prior, but I wholeheartedly agree with the article. The immersion in GT7 VR is insane. Even in VR spectator mode it's a treat to behold.

CrimsonWing69793d ago

Yea I’ll for sure check those out!

SullysCigar793d ago

Once you go VR, flat screens disaPR? Nope, I got nothing either!

CrimsonWing69793d ago

lol, yea, I'm hoping someone on here will make a catch phrase.

YodaCracker793d ago

I just started playing GT7 again after briefly having tried it around release. Briefly because I just couldn’t get into it. I know my opinion won’t be popular here, but the racing felt sterile and lifeless, and I was very put off by the horrendous UI/convoluted menus.

Now the UI still frustrates me but I put up with it because the racing is so immersive in VR. It really has transformed what I considered a boring game into something exciting.

fr0sty793d ago

they just dropped that new AI update that has been getting so much praise as well.. Sophie or whatever they called it.

SullysCigar793d ago

Indeed. Makes a big difference to the typical faults in otherwise realistic racers. It's also great for people who want to race against an unpredictable opponent, but aren't fond of people online.

Brings the AI to life in a satisfying way.

Shadowsteal793d ago

Sophy, it's a play on Sony & Polyphony.

IRetrouk793d ago

Bro hit me up on psn and I'll add you to a gt 7 group that races every weekend, you want excitment in gt? We got that in spades!

Deathdeliverer793d ago

For me the VR mode is great. Undoubtedly. I have two situations that I can only do maybe once or twice before needing a break. The NASCAR tracks that are on a straight up 45° angle & the off road races. I gotta have a coke on deck because those two can make me nauseated as hell. Outside of that, phenomenal. I think menus are fine. Maybe they could add a little depth so it’ll be more lively than a regular menu, but I appreciate the simplicity. Give me VR in the pre-Race countdown. Hopefully there’s an option for no shaking off the screen which sucks because it’s fine in regular races.
