It's official: Nintendo is now charging $69.99 for first-party games

Nintendo has officially confirmed that its new first-party Switch games will cost $69.99 starting with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Nintendo did not make an announcement that directly addresses the price increase and it is unknown whether or not all future first-party Nintendo games will cost $69.99.

People judge value for money differently.

Some people are happy to pay $70 for Redfall. Some people are happy to pay $70 for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Are any of these games worth the price of entry? YOU decide.

Army_of_Darkness854d ago

Psssh... Paying current gen prices for last gen software! Ninty gamers better lube up for this one 🤣🤣

Tacoboto854d ago

What's really gonna suck is when the Switch 2 releases and Nintendo shows us their version of upgrading - another full $70 with no cross-saves

GotGame818854d ago (Edited 854d ago )

TLOU PS3, TLOU Remastered for PS4, and then TLOU remake PS5, Sony released TLOU 3 times, in 9 years! Talk about milking it!

MADGameR853d ago

If Nintendo fans want a change, then don't buy those $70 games. Watch the sales fail and then Nintendo will see that the Nintendo fans don't like the $70 price tag. But let's face the reality, that'll never happen because Nintendo fans will always support their games nomatter what the cost. That is why they will always get away with these business practices. You don't like the price? Well you're just one person.......try stopping the other millions of Nintendrones that will pay $70 for PS3-era graphics like games. LOL Goodluck!

That means an even longer wait for them to drop in price then, since Nintendo games hold their price as it is.

So when's the next system coming out? It's way overdue..

jambola854d ago

The switch only came out 6 years ago
How is it overdue?

NecrumOddBoy854d ago

It’s 6 years old and 4 generations behind.

stloony854d ago

They were already behind the times when it came out 6 years ago.

Thankfully the quality of Nintendo's 1st party games are still enough to warrant their support.

Exvalos854d ago

It was outdated 6 years ago, you clearly can see what the steam deck is doing, nintendo needs to be ar least ps4 level At this point

Smitty2020854d ago

Because it struggles to run games

Neonridr854d ago

I love how the 2nd sentence literally contradicts the first. Way to go journalism.

Nyxus854d ago

Nintendo said to Game Informer that this isn't a trend for all games going forward.

On if this is the trend for Nintendo titles going forward:
"No. We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis."

https://www.gameinformer.co...

Neonridr854d ago

this article literally says that 1st party titles will cost $70 from now on, then the next sentence says "we don't know if all future titles will cost this much".

Why not just say Zelda 2 costs $70.

just a strange article all around.

badz149854d ago

@Neonridr

FOR NOW! Zelda will start it and they know people will buy it regardless, thus, it's safe to assume that all Nintendo's 1st party titles going forward will launch at $70, knowing Nintendo!

neutralgamer1992853d ago

Because do you really expect Nintendo to charge less? This is the same company that over charges for everything so given the option we can assume they will do the same now

jambola854d ago

Lol didn't even realize that
Wow

Journalism? Regurgitating facts from other articles found online is not journalism. No interviews, no research, no journalism

GotGame818854d ago (Edited 854d ago )

This isn't true, and my link will show that. Nintendo said Zelda's price won't be the new normal. They will price games "on a case by case basis". If it were true Metroid Prime Remastered wouldn't be $39.99.

Popular first party Switch games will now be $70. LOL!

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom (Switch 2) -A Sublime Sequel, Now Sublimer| NintendoLife

"When all's said and done, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a fantastic revamp of perhaps Nintendo's most sublime sequel. What was once a technical marvel on aged hardware now has a chance to truly shine, with visual and performance boosts undoubtedly making it the definitive way to play.

Nothing will ever match the feeling of playing it for the first time, of course, and some bonus content would have been welcome, but armed with Zelda Notes and the promise of buttery smooth upgrades, I'd challenge anyone to dip back in without losing hours to its unrivalled wonder." - Jim Norman | NintendoLife

I argue that simple res/FPS bumps should be free, and then you can charge $10 if it includes actual extra content. That seems to be what has been settled on.

Many PS4 games got free upgrades for PS5 when just increasing res/FPS. Days Gone, for example, got a free FPS bump to start the generation. Now it's getting a "remaster", improved visuals/extra modes/content for $10.

I know they have *some* free upgrades - though we don't know what they entail - but the Zelda games just seem like they know they can get money from eager new buyers, so why not. Zelda Notes doesn't quite seem to justify $10, but hey, let us choose. Make it a $10 app, and give the res/FPS upgrades for free.

Weird the Jamboree pack being 20 with no new boards or minigames for party mode, way to miss the mark. Minigame variety is seriously lacking for the party mode compared to superstars, my biggest issue with the game, think I'll pass on that.

I wonder if there will be supply issues (unable to find the system). Interesting that they are launching in the middle of the year as well.

gold_drake46d ago

some of these are abit pricey.
like why?

neutralgamer199245d ago

It's Nintendo they know they can get away with it. Bits that simple

Dhika45d ago

Why the differences in prices?
