Great game with some of the best visuals and very satisfying melee combat

Visuals were great and so is the melee but many are iffy on the other combat mechanics. I did not have an issue other than what I noted.

I played it a lot yesterday and have almost beaten it.

It's OK, but feels cheap too often. Those heads in eggs get you nearly every time and a few are around corners so you don't stand a chance. Not scary, just annoying.

Also, the number of times I've thrown an enemy and they have landed just short of instant death is unbelievable. Just feels cheap.

Great point or when you grab and it fizzles fast even when charged vs a toss and spike. That is the key to that Tram car. No ticket? Off you go.

I'd add that the gameplay just feels broken in too many places:

You can never turn and run from an enemy; you always get hit, no matter how far away the enemy is when you try and run.

You can't pick up and throw ******, even after it splits in half and would be half the weight. Breaks the rules already set by the game.

Pretty sure there are cases where the enemy takes the same amount of damage, regardless of whether you are using a pistol or heavy weapon.

So I beat it and started NG+ on the hardest difficulty. Surprising how easy it is once you know what to expect and understand the mechanics.

Overall a 7.5 out of 10 from me.

Agreed. Thoroughly enjoyed this game though I get the criticisms.

The last patch helped with several of them but the story worked for me.

3 playthroughs and enjoyed them all changing my style each time.

Garethvk44d ago

Which one has worked best for you?

Maxing out the glove early was the easiest playthrough but I enjoyed the mixed approach the most as it made the game challenging upgrading the glove, weapons and melee more evenly..
If you max out the glove early, the weapons will unlock anyway when you reach certain points in the game but you still have to buy the weapon to unlock the upgrades.
Or unlock the weapons early and keep buying plenty of ammo when you reach the 3D printers but the glove will be less effective leaving a few sections really challenging when there are a lot of enemies

I didn't buy any ammo on my first run on defavlt difficulty and and now I'm up to chapter 4 on hardest difficulty and have hardly used any guns at all.

It’s competently made for sure. But the atmosphere and sound design are pretty bland. I never for a second found it tense like Dead Space is. And I think a big part of that is the melee combat. Once you know how it works it doesn’t become instense at all. They get close and it’s not a big deal. Again, in dead space you don’t want the enemy’s anywhere near you so when they get close you start to want distance. But in Callisto Protocol, that’s the combat. I think it loses a lot because of it. Plus the jump scares are bad. They’re non stop and every time you can see them a mile away.
I think it came down to a lot of bad design choices more than the game itself being bad. It’s just bland.

The ability to beat down most enemies when you do not have ammunition is a big advantage over Dead Space but does take some of the challenge. I had to clock a Necromorph several times to get it down when I was low on ammo on the new one.

EvertonFC44d ago

Yeah it's easy to remember the enemy patterns with melee.
It's why I enjoyed the maxed out glove and buying plenty of ammo play style more but obviously certain sections melee is the only option.
I jumped once in the entire game which was disappointing but I did enjoy the game and the story, sadly I don't think we'll get a sequel though 😔

We are due for story DLC in the summer.

Elda44d ago

It was ok but playing at times for me was frustrating. I'm enjoying Dead Space Remake much better.

Garethvk44d ago

I have not cursed at a game anywhere to the level I did this game due to some battles.

I now what you mean...lol!
