Hi-Fi Rush Went Viral Internally at Bethesda Leading to Shadow Drop

Hi-Fi Rush made for an exciting shadow drop after last week's Xbox Developer Direct, but the general public isn't the first to be enamored by it. Apparently, it went a bit viral internally at Bethesda first - which in part led to Tango's decision to shadow drop it in the first place.

Orchard819d ago

The game is great, and the fact that Tango can go from horror games to this, at the complete other end of the spectrum, really shows their strengths as a developer.

Obscure_Observer819d ago

Amazing game! Epic shadowdrop!

We shouldn´t wait for more shadowdrops like this since it´s a developer choice. But it would be truly amazing to be presented with more surprises like Hi-Fi Rush.

It went viral internally. Usually that's just marketing talk in most cases because of course theyll be high giving themselves internally across studios.

Thankfully it turned out to be a hit and the ppl responded.

In fact the game did so well it hot number 8 on Steam beating out Forspoken. Unfortunately didn't hit top 10 last week. It's even on track to bringing in more revenue than Forspoken.

This is clearly not the first time AA games do better than the AAA counter parts critically. Stray, High On Life, Pentiment, Sifu. I really don't want a world where AA will take over AAA. If AAA can't get their acts together.

isarai819d ago

I do want a world where AA takes over AAA. i hate what the AAA industry has become. Hard to find any AAA game that isnt a terribly balanced excuse for microtransactions, filled to the gills with pointless fluff like lame collectibles and hundreds of missions with no real soul or substance. I know many people playing today did not grow up playing games before PS4 but the AA reigned Supreme in those times, and that's where all the interesting ideas and concepts came from.

Lightning77819d ago

The issue is AAA's are so high risk in the financial department devs play it way too safe. Like you said the bloat, the long pointless or lifeless hours of play. Or Microtransactions all over the place.

Back in the day if a new AAA underperformance in sales with a decently good reception they'll release a sequel. Said game has potential and devs are willing to try a again. These days not so much due to the cost of making AAA games. I dunno know what AAA devs need to do but something needs to change. I don't want AA to be the borm or overlap AAA experiences myself.

porkChop819d ago

"I really don't want a world where AA will take over AAA."

I do. If a game actually justifies such a crazy budget then fine, make it AAA. But so many games have insane budgets and marketing campaigns that last years, even if they really don't need or justify it. On top of that, so many games opt for massive open worlds that increase dev time. The Yakuza series has proven that a small, densely populated world would work much better in a lot of cases.

If a game is probably only going to sell 3 to 5 million units you shouldn't spend $100m+ marketing it, and you shouldn't have like 300+ devs working on it. Give it to a smaller team and keep the scope reasonable. Don't announce it until 3-6 months from release. Do a reveal trailer, a big gameplay reveal, a launch trailer, and a couple interviews. That's all you need for the majority of games.

Lightning77819d ago

"Give it to a smaller team and keep the scope reasonable."

I see what you're saying maybe devs need to start hitting realistic goals instead of over exaggerating features that we've seen a million times only in slightly different ways.

I partially agree with your comment. The thing is AAA's are the forefront to growing gaming in several different ways. Benchmark for story telling, mechanics, features, scope, interactivety, size, graphics/realism. Aaa's is and has shown its also that trans media industry. With several movies and TV shows based on popular games. The Witcher and TLOUS TV are proof of said cross over into Hollywood and reaching casual gamers or ppl who don't really game at all. The issue with AA's is its perception. Most see AA's games and say oh I can run that on my phone or tablet. Which isn't a bad thing on the surface but it degrades the medium because it's seen as yet another phone or tablet game. It's mixed in with mobile stuff. That's why MS needs to release AAA and slow down with AA. People will start to get the wrong perception of what a game should be.

Petebloodyonion819d ago

@Lightning 77 why can't this be true?
ED boon mentioned how ppl were crazy about MK uppercut when developing the game.

shinoff2183819d ago

I don't want a world where people hate a game over nitpicking sh(swearing, dialogue, ) and all we get is sequels and more of the same because developers of aaa games are afraid to take chances.

ZwVw818d ago

Weren't you recently complaining about companies like MS "milking" ips like Halo and not taking a gamble on fresh concepts? Now, you're groaning about not wanting unique games like Pentiment and HiFi to becoming the norm because they're not AAA?

You just like to complain for the sake of complaining.

Lightning77818d ago

Halo has been done over and over and over again to the point ton where it is now.

If we can translate AA game concepts in terms of new and unique Ideas into AAA. Then AAA will be back on track. AA are fine but they shouldn't be over taking AAA games.

I finished it last night. I know it's only January but I'll be surprised if it's not on my top 5 games at the end of the year.

XiNatsuDragnel819d ago

A great game a definite worth to try it that and pentiment, high on life, SIFU, And Stray are amazing games as well.

Lightning77819d ago

Yeah but we need AAA to be the talk of the town. AA need to be the filler in between the AAA games like how it's always been.

That's just my opinion.

goldwyncq819d ago

AAA games are overrated most of the time. If you want games that do something new and take risks to provide new experiences, you’d be better off playing indies. So much of the AAA space nowadays has been oversaturated by generic open world games with RPG elements that gives you repetitive sidequests and holds your hand to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Orchard819d ago (Edited 819d ago )

You’re writing this when last week both HiFi and Forspoken came out.

One is AA and is great.
The other is AAA and woeful.

nice we need more fun games please and less money grabbing micro transcations

PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Are Not the Future of Gaming, Says US Analyst

For the first few years of this generation, a number of industry analysts argued Sony may need to add first-party games to PS Plus at launch in order to maintain pace with Xbox Game Pass.

The Japanese giant, to its credit, always maintained its position that this was unsustainable. It later added tiers to its subscription offering, providing good value with PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium without going all-in like its Redmond rival.

Microsoft has since missed a number of targets with its own service, and has subsequently started releasing games like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Sony’s console.

Well Sony never said that, the other camp did and we all know how that went.

goken2h ago

Not all know. I am betting those observing this while obscured may have trouble comprehending 😅

dveio21h ago

Back in the day, there were even discussions and I believe statements from Spencer about wether Sony would allow Game Pass on Playstation.

At least for the time being this option seems definitely to be ruled out completely.

Why Portability Still Matters for Nintendo Switch 2—and What We’re Hoping to See

Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades portability with a bigger screen, 1080p handheld play, and Wi-Fi 6. Here's why it still matters in 2025.

As someone who travels for work I still care about portable systems.

I have found using remote play in a hotel room is an excellent experience in a major city as I've got my console hard wired to a gigabit connection at home however it's not perfect if power trips the console tends to go to the repair section and can't be booted remotely so it's a annoying call to family to power it on for me.

A hotel out of town or regionally though that can cause havok for remote play as I'm always on 5g using it hotel wifi is never good enough for a solid remote play session.

But leaving a stable location and getting onto a plane or train and there's little to no chance of a good experience with remote play thats where something like the switch 2 will really shine for me personally long haul flights are exhausting and one of my most hated things the switch has been invaluable for me and I'll absolutely be upgrading

Goodguy011d 9h ago

Nintendo has always done it the best, handheld is in their genes. I do wish their dock could be like an egpu though and it make it much more powerful, it's a bit harder for me to play portable now for some odd reason, love just sitting on the couch with a big screen and controller. And ofc always great to have the portable option and for me it's best for smaller games.

jznrpg1d 7h ago

I was hoping for a little more than 540p upscaled

UltimateOwnage1d 6h ago

IMO, 540P upscaled in portable mode to a 1080P screen using DLSS on the tensor cores will likely extend battery life using a lower TDP and provide much better anti-aliasing and similar clarity compared to native 1080P with med/low AA at a higher TDP. It’s just a better way to use a mobile chipset. That’s not a flaw or weakness, it’s a key benefit for the portable design of the platform.

repsahj1d ago

Lol, even the impressive upscaling feature of Switch 2 can now spin to a negative one.

jznrpg4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Switch 1 was hitting 720p and above that with no upscale, so why can’t they have a higher res and upscale it more

repsahj3h ago

@jznrpg
Because of that even the current gen games will now run on switch 2 that looked as good and with decent framerate as the current gen consoles.

Do you watch Nintendo's hands on preview for switch 2? LOL.

badz14917h ago

because aside from Nintendo's own games which have their dedicated fanbase, portability is the only other thing it has going for it. Nintendo will be eliminated faster than xbox if they ever decide to do a dedicated home console again. going the hybrid way is the only way left for them and they are lucky they dominated the portable market all those years ago. imagine the power of the Switch 2 as a console this day and age with the same price as PS5. they will be the laughing stock of the market.
