DualSense Edge PS5 Pro Controller Review - The Most Premium, High-End Controller On The Market Today

PlayStation Universe: "In our DualSense Edge controller review we discover that Sony absolutely sticks the landing with its first attempt at pro controller - deftly building upon the resoundingly sound foundation lain down by its now entry level DualSense controller."

SullysCigar844d ago

It is gorgeous, but I'm going to need a bit of a sale before I can justify jumping in.

No hall effects and terrible battery life = failure

porkChop844d ago

I do hope next gen we see every controller with hall effect.

Jin_Sakai843d ago

I had to look up Hall Effect to see what it was. Interesting! Why exactly aren’t controllers today using this tech?

porkChop843d ago

Honestly I don't know. But there are 3rd parties that use them. I have an Android gamepad that has hall effect triggers.

Vits843d ago (Edited 843d ago )

@Jin_Sakai

They are considerably more expensive than normal "Alps". If I recall correctly from the Ayaneo discussions, potentiometer sticks can be had for pennies when bought in bulk. Whereas good quality Hall Effect ones cost dollars per unit.

And as these first-party companies probably produce millions of these controllers, they can save a good amount of money by going with the cheaper potentiometer sticks. So right now we are seeing Hall Effect sticks exclusively on smaller productions from third-party brands.

Rimeskeem844d ago

I don't see how 8 hours is terrible tbh.

Vits844d ago

I wouldn't call it terrible, but it's definitely on the lower side. The 8BitDo Ultimate offers 30h, the Kingkong Pro offers 14h, the Dareu H105 25h, the Elite Series 2 40h and the Flydigi Apex 3 supposedly 70h.

Neonridr844d ago

the article mentions just over 6 hours.

DarXyde843d ago

I don't think it is either, but they mention something less than that in the article. This is a controller intended for competitive use and I cannot imagine playing competitively for even 6 hours at a time. For its purpose, I think it's fine.

That said, I think at that price, you can and should expect more. I personally do not game for more than 2.5-3 hours at a time so it wouldn't bother me much (and it's why you'll never hear me complaining about the Dualshock 4 battery life either). But for many other people, this is a tough pill to swallow.

I would not blame anyone for saying it doesn't bother them, but I also can see why it would bother someone. If you're going to make a pro controller, I think the expectation is the battery life, at minimum, matches that of the original. At $200, I think that's a bare minimum.

JL2930844d ago (Edited 844d ago )

Matter of time before companies make 3rd party HE analogs.

myfathersbastard844d ago

It’s just over 6hrs in testing and that’s at the start. Give it a year. I have 3, 2 from launch and 1 from before last Christmas. My launch ones don’t last 4 hrs anymore. It’s the same better in the Edge.
My aftermarket rechargeables for my series X last around 30hrs. So yeah. 6-8 hrs is terrible.

EvertonFC843d ago (Edited 843d ago )

Take a break, recharge controller while having some lunch, walk the dog, or maybe do some quick house cleaning and l bingo ready to go again.
Not difficult

andy85843d ago

I just have 2 so ones always charged (not the edge of course). Battery isn't relevant to me given you could pick them up for about £20 in the UK recently

I was on the fence about getting one. I had it preordered, but ended up cancelling. Couldn't justify it at the moment, especially since I'm dropping a fair penny on the PS VR2 next month.

No doubt it's probably amazing, and maybe one day I will get one, but most of my competitive gaming is done on the PC where my PS5 is primarily the grander, single player experiences. I don't feel that the benefits of the controller are warranted for me personally.

To those getting it, I hope you enjoy it.

Dandalandan117844d ago

That's what's keeping me from buying it as well.
I only play single player games on the PS5 anyways so I'm not gonna take advantage of certain features of it. Might as well save up for PSVR2 instead.

Deathdeliverer844d ago

To be fair, other controllers are using old age rumble and haptics. Not to mention nowhere near as much sensors, voice/sound input/output, the touch pad, basically powered triggers, and the light bar. The base PS5 controller is one of the, if not the, most advanced controllers you can buy. Now you most of that get…. Better. I’m honestly not surprised or disappointed by the battery life. People are trying to compare controller to controller and consider the battery should be comparable when the features are not. When you play a PS5 game that uses the features it’s not even in the same state as others. Playing Astros for the first time is enough to make even the most jaded gamer say wait… they are onto something.

Pedrof844d ago

It's just a shame all controller features are not more widely implemented by developers. We could have amazing things with the gyro, touchpad and lightbar.

Neonridr843d ago

I had a Scuf controller for my PS4. Awesome that it was customizable, but the build quality was suspect AF. Cheaper plastic casing, thumbsticks that started to wear down. And that thing was crazy expensive.

SurgicalMenace843d ago

My Scuf broke within a year of me purchasing it with no option to remedy the issues it was presenting. This controller is rechargeable, and it gives the option to remedy stick drift for a reasonable price. I've got the controller and two additional modules just in case I have any problems. That alone is worth the price as no other Pro Controller offers anything remotely close as an option. People complaining about the battery life while ignoring all the features the controller has to offer never intended on buying it anyway.

Neonridr843d ago

@SurgicalMenace - tbh 6+ hours isn't that short, it's not like I'm ever using it that long for a play session, when I'm done I put my controllers on the charger.

Damn if I didn't have a Portal and Edge already I would be all over these

Stevonidas129d ago

I recently decided to invest in a new DualSense, Pulse headset, and console plates for my PS5. All Midnight Black. Love the blacked out look.

Tsar4ever01129d ago

Does this mean we will soon hear about "ALL BLACK COVER PLATES" for the PS5 & Pro models?

S2Killinit128d ago

If you click on the article, there is a picture that may answer that question.

I like it. Looks super sleek.

PS5 gets another steep price increase in Japan

VGC writes: "Both the standard and digital models are going up by around $90."

Even accounting for the weak yen, that seems a bit excessive. It’s even stranger considering the rumors of a PS5 Pro possibly launching by the end of the year, which means that in Japan, it could cost significantly more than $600, probably close to $700 - a high price for a console.

DivineHand125262d ago

The price increase is excessive. If the value of the yen is to blame, then I would expect the console price to be adjusted to match the price of the $500 disc PS5 at which would be ¥71916.58. Instead Sony added an additional $50 USD raising the total to ¥79,000.

I'm not sure if they have to pay extra fees to import the console but the PS5 has had so many revisions that Sony should be able to keep the price inline with the US price at this point. I believe part of this increase is because they can increase the price without worrying about any fallout.

JL2930261d ago

Just to play 3rd party games and remasters.

ocelot07262d ago

Wtf is going on this generation with the price increases years after release?

Workshyskiver262d ago

Global inflation combined with Sony having such a large share of the console market they can do whatever they like and you will damn well accept it.

VersusDMC262d ago

Xbox has a smaller share of the market(miniscule in japan) and still raised the price(twice this year) of the series X in japan...so everyone is doing whatever they like.

Extermin8or3_262d ago

In Japan song is second Nintendo is the leading console maker in Japan.

jwillj2k4262d ago

I’d like to see them try that shit in America. Xboxes will start to sell quiiiick!

rlow1262d ago

Yet inflation fell in the last year in the United States. Though I’m not sure about Japan.

CobraKai262d ago

It’s crazy. We’d shoulda been hearing about price drops already, not increases.

The_Blue262d ago

Assassin's Creed hype for sure.

Limitedtimestruggle262d ago

Sony just leaving it up to Nintendo at this point. PS5 obviously not gonna be a mainstream product over there. Xbox is not relevant.

ChasterMies262d ago

Folks in the U.S. don’t understand that the U.S. had one of the lowest rates of inflation. It’s worse in almost every other country and the U.S. dollar is a lot stronger which makes imports even cheaper. I would love to see deflation but we’d need a recession and mass layoffs before that would happen,

Extermin8or3_262d ago

Nooooo you do not want to see deflation that spells complete disaster for an economy. What you want is wages and growth to be consistently higher than inflation.

jwillj2k4262d ago

That aint ever happen lol
