The Nintendo Switch has outsold the lifetime sales of the Game Boy, according to VGChartz estimates.
The Switch sold an estimated 872,694 units for the week ending December 10, 2022 to bring its lifetime sales to 118.99 million units. This compares to the Game Boy with sales of 118.69 million units lifetime. The figure for the Switch includes the combined sales of the original Switch model, the Switch Lite, and Switch OLED.
It was a long time coming... switch will prob close out 22 north of 120m. Pretty impressive for not yet being 6 years old.
Switch is now in the top 3 selling systems of all time. Next up is the DS at 154M. Will the Switch be able to reach that benchmark? Honestly, I think how sales look in 2023 will provide us with the answer. If they can hit 18M in 2023 (thereby sales for Switch reach 138-139M) then I think they can nab it (since they'd just need 15M more lifetime). If sales slow down significantly (e.g. 12M or less) then I don't think it has a shot.
Hats off to Nintendo. I thought the switch would tank before it launched…shows what I know I guess!
“Nintendo's hybrid console has now become the third best-selling video game platform of all time. Next up is the Nintendo DS with 154.02 million units sold lifetime. The Switch is 35.03 million units behind the Nintendo DS.”
It could happen if Nintendo gave it a price cut
