Extra i really like, Premium just doesnt seem worth it at all imo. I still dont understand why it's such a slow drip of games added to the classics catalog. I could understand some 3rd party games due to licensing etc, but Sony still has dozens of 1st party games missing from the service for no real reason. I would think they would at least fill it with the stuff they own themselves since there would be no red tape or licensing issues to jump through, but apparently not.
When I see the classics released on there it does seem like some sort of work has been done on them. Worms ps1 included online , I know a few months before ps plus came Sony had hired a team. The teams description kinda made it sound like that's what they would be doing. Making small improvements to some classics.
I'm personally with you though. Hurry up please. To many good games need releasing.
I have absolutely 0% interest in the classics catalog but what I’ve found myself using the most is the game trials.
I was ready to downgrade to extra as that’s clearly where the value is but managed to get a year of premium for about £60. So I’ve decided to give it a chance. I’m hoping the Callisto protocol will appear on it soon.
Think he’s talking about the price difference you would pay if you were a PS+ Essential or XBLG member and what you’d pay on top of that to get access to PS+ Extra or Game Pass
With PS+ you’d go from $60 to $100 annually With XBLG you’d go from $60 to $180 annually
You could just subscribe to Game Pass alone annually for $120, but with PS+ Extra you get the benefit of online multiplayer, monthly free games and the Games Catalog for $20 less
Where are you getting $120 per year? Game Pass Ultimate is $15 and includes XBLG. So the upgrade would only be an extra $5 per month, which is $60. Why are you doubling it?
Basic Gold (equivalent of Essential): $60/year Add GamePass: additional $120/year (total of $180/year) GamePass Ultimate: $180/year. Ultimate isn't any cheaper, but it gives you more, like streaming
@porkChop "Where are you getting $120 per year? Game Pass Ultimate is $15 and includes XBLG. So the upgrade would only be an extra $5 per month, which is $60. Why are you doubling it?"
Xbox Live Gold is $9.99/month. Xbox Game Pass for Console is also $9.99/month. Copy-pasta from: https://www.microsoft.com/e... From the same link above Xbox Gamepass for PC is "After first month, subscription continues automatically at $14.99/month unless cancelled." And Gamepass for Console is "After first month, subscription continues automatically at $9.99/month unless cancelled."
Meanwhile PS+ offers actual variety with per month *OR* per quarter *OR* per year payment plans. The following is for all PS+ plans.
PS+ Essential: 1 Month Subscription Pay every month. Subscription continues until canceled. $9.99 ($119.88/yr) 3 Month Subscription Pay every 3 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $24.99 ($99.96/yr) 12 Month Subscription Pay every 12 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $59.99 ($59.99/yr)
PS+ Extra: 1 Month Subscription Pay every month. Subscription continues until canceled. $14.99 ($179.88/yr) 3 Month Subscription Pay every 3 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $39.99 ($159.96/yr) 12 Month Subscription Pay every 12 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $99.99 ($99.99/yr)
PS+ Premium 1 Month Subscription Pay every month. Subscription continues until canceled. $17.99 ($215.88/yr) 3 Month Subscription Pay every 3 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $49.99 ($199.96/yr) 12 Month Subscription Pay every 12 months. Subscription continues until canceled. $119.99 ($119.99/yr) Copy-pasta from: https://www.playstation.com...
So Xbox Live Gold costs $9.99/mo which is $119.88/yr plus Gamepass for $9.99/mo which is another $119.88/yr or you can pay $179.88/yr by getting Gamepass Ultimate for both PC and console for $14.99/mo. Either way PS+ is much less expensive actually provides a huge roster of games that often look and or run better and if you have no love for PS1/PSP games you also get even more savings on top of it by paying on $100 a year.
This also doesn't include sales day. Be crazy to get your yearly PS sub any other day when you're saving 25-40% on the yearly cost. Especially as they're done a sales day twice in the last month
That's how I feel anyway. Extra is far cheaper than the competition and much better value. There's just not enough on Premium to bring the value for the additional spend, in my opinion, but that should change in time.
Premium also gets you streaming, but I'm guessing most people don't care about that. It does give you access to all those PS3 games fwiw. Not worth it for me at least
I currently only have essential and I've considered getting extra. I prob will switch to extra in the coming year when my essential sub is up for renewal.
I have Extra and for me it’s a no. I already had played most of the games on the service and own a good few of them on physical disc. I also want to see more classics being released as that was the main draw card for me. I have my physical collection of PS1 and PS2 titles, for me the service is a way so as not to scratch my discs and place unnecessary wear on my legacy consoles.
Yeah if my Extra expired tomorrow I wouldnt renew it. As it is I've no intention to, when it does go. I'll just stick to essential. There has been some great games added to Extra. I really enjoyed them when I bought them all 6 years ago 😒
“But even the raw number of games available to PS Plus Extra and Premium members — most of which were inherited from the old PlayStation Now service — does little to make the PlayStation 4 and PS5’s add-on program competitive with Microsoft’s.”
Yeah I don’t get this mindset. I’ve had access to both services and I could/can find a lot more to play on PS+ than on Game Pass.
When you have to argue that having more games isn’t a benefit and shouldn’t be the deciding factor for which service I should use more you’ve lost me.
I got the Premium membership and, whilst I love the essential games each month, nothing has so far jumped out that justified the extra money asked if us for the top tier.
Extra yes, without any doubt. It's the tier i'm paying for and i'm more than satisfied. Premium... well... usually i go for the bigger tier, if the offer is good. But for now i don't see anything good for me there, so i stick to the Extra.
I still think essential is best, Extra is okay (i'm not interested in Gamepass-like features, not with the gaming library I built up over many years). Premium was definitely a dud though, should have just stuck to 2 tiers and leave it at that.
I own a ps5 and a series x. I am a subscriber to PS plus premium and gamepass, and I agree with article. PS plus definitely has more games but us most of it old stuff I’d have to stream, but can’t stream to a mobile device. Gamepass on the other hand is more flexible with more ways to play and is also simpler and less confusing. All games run natively (unless you choose to stream for accessibility).
Day one games are still the biggest differentiator tho and gamepass is unbelievable here. There’s been more than a few times when a game comes out and I’m browsing the ps store for new releases and a number of games in that store I could just pop over to my series x and play for free. Just recently - Deathloop, hello neighbor 2, metal: hellslingers, chained echoes, persona 3,4,5 and now upcoming atomic heart are the latest new game examples (persona is a new game on Xbox so it’s still a day one releases in that context). All of these games cost money on PS5 but are day one releases on Gamepass.
The other thing the article doesn’t mention is that while games rotate in and out of gamepass, if you have a game installed that’s leaving, it will still run after. It doesn’t just stop working. They even send out notifications telling you which ones are leaving so you can install them before they go.
PS plus in comparison just doesn’t feel as special and at least on the PS 5 it feels like a convoluted mess, constantly trying to upsell you. It feels like they smashed ps now (which was just ok) into PS plus and threw some other older games in to inflate the numbers of what’s on offer. Quite frankly as a ps plus premium subscriber, I regret paying for the top tier. I don’t see the value add. If you are thinking of subscribing to a higher tier, the middle tier (extra) is all you need, and you’ll feel the higher tier should just be included in the middle tier since the differences are largely insignificant.
I sincerely hope Sony reconsider launching day one games on ps plus. It will never be as good if it doesn’t. MS even offered call of duty on ps plus and Sony should consider those things.
With rewards to your day one comment. I don't tbh. You already see the quality difference with MS offering day one stuff. Now imagine a company with far far less money starts doing it. The quality of games would suffer badly. Personally for me buying day one then selling I'm paying under £10 a game anyway. I'd much rather it that way
Premium absolutely has been a waste of money. I thought they’d really deliver on PS1 classic with trophies, but nope, it pretty much feels like they abandoned it.
PS Plus Extra was good when I had quality first party games to burn through. After that it's been all third party in very few categories. Ubisoft Open World. Square Enix JRPG. Yakuza. Service needs variety bad.
Well I've played 160 hours of Assasins Creed Valhalla, for me 1 of the 3 best RPGs I've ever played with Witcher 3 and Skyrim, the amount of great quests, content, battles, combat, is just staggering. So yes, it's been well worth it for me.
Well, I believe that The PS extra tier is great value when you factor in Sony usually providing a 30% rebate at some sale events. I feel the catalog is adequate with a good variety of diverse titles that I would add to my Wishlist for a wait for a sale to purchase so for me it's a win. (Already played Returnal and Deathloop from the service).
My only concern is how Sony seems to already lose interest in the premium tier and not giving what was promised 1) the 80 titles Library of PS1-Ps2 and PSP games 2) the supposed curated demo category and tryout for 1st party games (like the 10 hours Ea play)
The library is barely updated with Legacy titles and we have yet to receive new demos and tryouts.
But in General, it's a service that I would easily recommend.
Monthly psn games: eh. Could be decent or could be trash. 2nd teir is worth it. 3rd teir absolutely not worth it. If we can still get cd keys discounts its worth it. Full price, mmmmm maybe if you had no other option.
Extra was. On sales day it ended up costing me under £5 a month for a year. With all the great additions it's very good value. Premium is...disappointing. such a wealth of early games to tap into and more annoying is when they're adding PS4 remasters as Premium additions when it was originally said it was for PS1/2/3/PSP.
I got a massive discount on the many years I have left so yeah it’s a good deal . I don’t really use it much but my kids do . I have premium for another 5+ years when my original PS Plus expires . I paid around 30 a year for PS plus and another 30 a year for premium when they offered the discounted upgrade . After that I am not sure what I will pick but for a long time I don’t need to consider it . I do keep an eye out for the cheapest PS sub deals so I may add another year or two here and there but only if I find the best deal as I’m covered for so long .
Premium is a waste of money if you already own all the PS5 exclusives like I do. I paid for Premium for two years and I have not downloaded anything in over a month. So in short Premium is worth it if you don’t have many of the exclusives it offers but if you do then I’d skip Premium.
Extra i really like, Premium just doesnt seem worth it at all imo. I still dont understand why it's such a slow drip of games added to the classics catalog. I more than got my money’s worth off the premium tier
I just wish the Metal Gear titles would return to the service
Another article that ignores annual membership costs:
PS Extra upgrade: $40/year
GamePass upgrade: $120/year
GamePass is THREE times more expensive than Extra.
Are you getting 3x the value?
This one's easy: Extra = yes, Premium = no.
That's how I feel anyway. Extra is far cheaper than the competition and much better value. There's just not enough on Premium to bring the value for the additional spend, in my opinion, but that should change in time.
