Every PlayStation 3 Game Now Boots Up On The RPCS3 Emulator

The online emulator for the console, RPCS3, boots up every game that the PlayStation 3 had in its lifetime.

I like the fact that emulation will have settings and features that will improve the graphics and frame rate beyond what was originally intended. It's just a matter of the emulator being further refined and optimized, plus the capability of the PC running it

Directly, no. Something to do with Sony copy protection or the way the original games were burned. But you can use a compatible drive to dump your own games and then play them using the emulator.

Sony needs to hire these guys - or pay to license the tech. They're doing a far better job of preserving the PS3's legacy than Sony are.

It's totally open source they realistically could just take it. Like they did for the PS classic

Possibly yeah - depending on the license attached they may be able to use it or commercial use.

The funny part though is that most o/s licenses require that you publish the source with any changes you make (e.g. https://research.activision... ) so ironically you would see Sony publish changes improving the open-source emulator.

I think it's under rated as performance on real hardware left a Lot to be desired games frequently dropped into the 25 fps range like crysis 2 and 3

Studios stopped experimenting as much and we started to see the rise of the clone game like how many cover based shooters running on unreal 3 did we get.

Personally I really enjoy looking back at that generation as it's where story based games really took off for me there where great stories through the years prior but they weren't as well done as the games we started seeing in the HD era.

This is also the last console generation where. Retro collection can be fully established with the majority of titles being playable from disc the x1 and PS4 started seeing online DRM, mandatory downloads being required and some games won't even function offline. That's not to say PS3 didn't have games like this but it's really minascual in comparison.

Story based gaming started on the snes. It started getting bigger and bigger. It was around nes but fairly limited. It hit the ground running on snes, genesis. Not sure why you think it started two generations ago lol

Naw it really wasn't though. Ps1 ps2 ps4 and probably ps5 will have had better games in the end. Ps3 Era was full of way to many military shooters and fps in general. Jrpg were barely even released on any console. Ps3 as a system was a beast but the games weren't brought like the previous generations

The last announcement was that every game was bootable - but bootable for them basically means starts up and doesn’t show an OS error, even if it just starts up and remains on a black screen.

Now the “bootable” group is also empty, meaning everything now at least starts up and actually shows something, even if that something is just legal texts and intro videos.

Is not profitable for Sony to emulate ps3 games and besides most popular ones got remastered on the ps4

Which is exactly why they removed it on the PS3. Reduced the manufacturing costs of the system (but of course not the price to consumer), and they just got to keep reselling old content at a premium.

Just like now, in the world of free upgrade paths, they just call everything a "remake" and then charge you like it's a new game.

Sony was also taking a huge loss on ps3s at first. Did you expect them to lower the cost and continue to take an l all generation. Also they didn't cost 600 all generation so at some point it did drop in price.

I’d love for my PS5 to play PS3 game discs. This would have made the PS5 come at a higher price though. If you’ve streamed a PS3 game you should know it’s a mixed bag. A lot of the time they don’t run too well. But the only game that I really want is GTA 4.

I don't know what you were trying to play but I played straight through xcom enemy within. A pretty taxing game on ps3 and it ran fine. I think it might be a internet issue on your end or something.

Xbox Series X runs classic game discs, has higher end hardware, and doesn't charge people any more for their hardware than PlayStation does theirs.
They even had a team that worked to enhance those games in multiple ways. Didn't ask paid upgrade paths for those either; nor did they put it behind a subscription paywall.

But sonys got way better games once they start putting them on ps plus. Sonys catalog crushes ms catalog any day.

Ms did it cause they had to. The Xbox one sold like sh. The Xbox 360 didn't get much love the last 3 years of its life. Neither did the one matter of fact

Emulation is great I have plenty. And yes I know it's for preservation. But you still can't beat playing on the original hardware when you can. Some idiots don't understand that, had this argument with the PC master race on Facebook regarding ps3. Getting excited about resolution, framerate. I'm a collector of retro games and the hardware so Emulation is not the be all and end all.
