Fallout 76: A look back at 2022

Parker Wilhelm writes:

Welcome back to Inside the Vault! Fallout 76 has grown significantly over the past year, with players worldwide experiencing all sort of happenings across Appalachia from travelling roadshows to extraterrestrial invasions! As the year ends, we wanted to reflect on those memorable events, updates and improvements that came to Fallout 76 in 2022. Before we begin, we want to first celebrate our community’s accomplishments using something we all enjoy: big numbers!

Fallout 76 has reached a total of 13.5 million players, deployed 2.9 million nukes and had over 5 million expedition missions completed.

Not bad for a game that a lot of people call a "Flop".

darkrider915d ago (Edited 915d ago )

Gamers got the game because of the name...

Lifexline915d ago

No gamers got the game because it’s fun. Believe it or not the internets opinion isn’t a fact just because people call it glitchy and broken on the internet doesn’t mean it’s like that for most people. No one is forcing them to play it it’s actually a great game. The fallout series is an amazing series.

It’s like halo infinite being called a disaster but go online and it has a big thriving community that love the game. Most people who bash something haven’t even tried it or only go based on what other people on the internet say.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH914d ago

Or they got the game because they enjoy it.

thesoftware730914d ago

Dark,
Lol, so much salt.

and even if your salty comment was based on facts, what's the problem? People always buy games because of the name, so what's your point? whatever negative point you are attempting, I'm sure 13.5 million people might disagree with you.

In fact, people buy almost every product partly based on brand/name. You are also a part of that program because we all know you think Sony shits gold.

shinoff2183914d ago (Edited 914d ago )

Lifexline

The games alright at most. Would've been way way better as a single player imo. I dabble in it every once in awhile but play a few hours before it starts to come back to me on why i dont like it.

Halo is a disaster it just has a dedicated fan base.

Orchard914d ago

@darkrider If they bought it because of the name, they stuck around for the fun - you wouldn’t keep playing a bad game years after launch simple because of the name.

@Shinoff F76 is not free…

shinoff2183914d ago (Edited 914d ago )

Orchard

It is or was on ps plus. Might not be free in a sense cause you pay for ps plus but it is or was on there. I think you knew what I meant but just wanted to play a little

Orchard914d ago

@shinoff No playing at all. I thought you meant it was F2P like a lot of these MMOs eventually go.

It is on PS+, but PS+ is not free.

We pay Sony, Sony pays MS. Nothing free about it.

Omegasyde914d ago

No gamers got the game because it was sale.

The game was a flop. Fallout 4 sold 12 million copies in 24 hours. Fallout 76 sold a million copies in a week. It wasn't even close to meeting its sales expectations.

The 13.5 million isn't sales, it's players - the game is on both PS Plus and Gamepass.

Defending this game against valid criticism given the horrendous state in launched in is just weird.

lelo2play914d ago

There are several games out there that on release weren't great (No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk, etc), but got better over time...

Why so much hate against Fallout 76?

Asplundh914d ago

@lelo

All those games were criticize just as much and rightfully so, people should in no way celebrate a game for no longer having the issues that should had been addressed before the games were even released.

darkrider914d ago

Don't say that, they don't want the truth. I got slammed because many got the game because of the name or after it was cheaper, because million Dont read reviews...

blackblades914d ago

I was just gonna say that, ialso I think it was free on epic store or unless that was another fallout

-Foxtrot914d ago

We have this "underdog" effect with games like this

People take what we have NOW, possibly years later rather than what was at launch

Sea of Thieves, Destiny, No Mans Sky, Fallout 76, The Avengers, Cyberpunk

Improve it a little and obviously it's going to be "so much better" as it wasn't amazing to start with and it then justifies the praise and defence.

It's like cool you like it but don't try and make out it's something it's not when we were all there at launch,

shinoff2183914d ago

Bingo. It's free. It was a flop no doubt about it. Hence it being free now and has been for a long time.

Orchard914d ago

@shinoff Where do I get it for free? It’s $40

-Foxtrot915d ago

It can have as many players as it wants, it still sucks

sparky77915d ago

It seems that gamers like games that suck then.

-Foxtrot915d ago (Edited 915d ago )

Clearly 🤷🏻‍♂️

However you can get it on Amazon for like £4 so…..

Doubt it would be as popular for full price

Charlieboy333914d ago (Edited 914d ago )

Only a certain fanbase fits that statement

shinoff2183914d ago

Would've been much better as a single player game.

-Foxtrot914d ago

Oh totally….like

*before the whole MS acquisition*

“Hmmm what can we invest in? Do we apologise to Obsidian for how we treat them and give them a proper budget / development cycle so they can do another Fallout spin off game, one in a location we’d not get the time to visit in the main games possibly outside the US to experiment OR get a not up to scratch Studio to do make a shitty looking online game even though people love single player games from us”

CorndogBurglar914d ago

This is kind of a silly thing to say. It wouldnt be the same game if it was single player lol. It just would have been Fallout 5.

sparky77915d ago

Massive comeback story, it's great when devs don't give up after an initial failure.

Tacoboto914d ago

Well, there was a lot that went wrong with this game from the very beginning.

The canvas bag BS. The launch state. The type of content available for the first year. The Gaas-ing of a single player IP.

These player counts are good in isolation but they fall far behind Skyrim and FO4, and at launch their handling of the stupid canvas bag drama alone highlighted just how little they cared about who they were making this for.

Just like with 343 and Halo Infinite, Fallout is a beloved IP and there shouldn't need to be a comeback story. But not only is there a comeback story, there is a treat-the-gamer-like-they-dont -matter story that it follows.

shinoff2183914d ago

Of those 13 million counted there's probably millions counted like me who turn it on every 2 3 months play for a few hours. O shit now I remember why I didn't like this game. That's right. Should've been single player

DarthZoolu914d ago

Fallout is my favorite franchise and I want this game to die so badly so we can get a real fallout game

shinoff2183914d ago

I'm right there with you darthzoolu. I remember playing the old ones before 3 came out fallout and last of us were my fav it's from ps3 generation. Then they give us this. Such a shame.

shinoff2183914d ago

It was a longstanding developer. They shouldn't have failed to begin with. They are vets in the video game world. They purposely released it in a garbage state.

Omegasyde914d ago

Comeback story… the game was pitched as GAaS…… they had no choice but to fix it to recoop development costs.

anast914d ago (Edited 914d ago )

The devs are just getting a pay check. I seriously doubt this is a passion project for most of them. There is nothing noble nor should any of this be celebrated. The devs and the publisher purposely put out an unfinished game to snake money form your digital wallet. Now they want more money from their revenue source, so the game gets the "comeback" title.
