Hands-on with Sony’s DualSense Edge, the $200 PS5 gamepad

Battery life will take a hit, but everything else seems just as good — if not better — than the original DualSense.

Its pretty disappointing that the battery life is even worse for a $200 product and having the same shell size isn’t really an excuse when other controllers in that price range all offer better battery life

kayoss490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

What’s the big deal? Just buy two and have the extra one on standby.
Im joking
Sonic1881490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

$400 for two lol and have one on standby. I guess that's another way to do it but not for the budget gamer though

VenomUK490d ago

Moderately shorter battery life- big deal! This means charging it, say, 40 minutes sooner.

I did preorder one... but I cancelled it because it's a lot of money for a person who is not an expert FPS gamer and because I thought the money would go to better use on PS VR2.

Orchard490d ago

Clearly you’ll need a third one too as a backup for when you forget to charge the standby.

Better to be safe than sorry!

gold_drake490d ago

thats a very pricey joke there haha

FinalFantasyFanatic489d ago

Looking at the battery life of the regular Dual Sense, it should be enough for a prolonged gaming session anyway. I don't think I've ever drained a PS controller in one gaming session unless I forgot to charge it earlier, I'll probably just get a dock to dump the controller onto after a session, battery life isn't that big of an issue in that case.

MajorLazer490d ago

Yeah the battery life is already really poor.

fr0sty490d ago

To hear "Just as good or better" than the original Dual Sense... for a controller that costs more than twice as much, that's not encouraging. It should be undeniably better in every way.

BQ32489d ago

It’s the functionality you are really paying for. so you can customize for highly competitive players such button remapping, extra paddles on the back, swappable stick height etc. Before I moved to m&k I always needed a pro controller. The higher level of of player you compete against the smallest advantages or disadvantages change outcomes.

414gamer489d ago

People should just stick with scuf controllers. Sony and Microsoft are both well known for issues with their controllers.

Duke19490d ago

Had the same exact thought. Its a nice looking controller but that MSRP seems like its set purely to setup to get ~30% discount sales pretty quickly. I think around a $120-140 price point and people would be all over it.

Outside_ofthe_Box490d ago

I'll be waiting for that price point as well

Flawlessmic490d ago

Agreed, $340 here in Australia, almost half the price of the actual ps5.

That's a no from me dawg, dual sense is more than sufficient for me

FinalFantasyFanatic489d ago

I really want those back paddles, but it's hard to justify that price just because I want paddles (also an Aussie).

Gardenia489d ago

Back buttons on a controller should be standard. And they should take away the touchpad because it isn't used by most games anyway.

ABizzel1489d ago

$150 and a battery that last 2x as long as the Dual Sense and we can talk, otherwise, the want to be seen gamers can buy this.

Battery life is worse for $200 dollars??? And how long will the sticks last before you have to replace them with a new module? One year maybe?? It's time for manufacturers to stop cheating us with products that are designed to die. Give us products that are designed to last. Give us magnetic sensors.

DarXyde490d ago

In an ideal world, they never could or would be cheating consumers with things like planned obsolescence. But that's only going to happen if people stop buying these products.

This doesn't seem like a bad product, but the battery life is worse and I don't really know who its audience is. Seems wholly pointless. So let Sony figure it out and come back with a better offer. If it's intended for competitive purposes, better to make it wired, really.

CrimsonWing69490d ago

I’d rather buy, like what, 3 or 4 games instead of a controller for that price, but more power to ‘em.

MONOLITHICIDE490d ago

Could of been buying a psp2 or vita 2 with this price

Angyobangyo490d ago

How a unicorn, seeing as if we're talking about nonexistent things.

3 reasons I love the DualSense Edge: The ultimate PlayStation 5 controller

T3:

As someone who plays PlayStation 5 most nights, I've been thinking recently about how much of my time I spend with a DualSense controller in my hands. It's a special bit of kit and with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, it's unlike any controller that came before it.

merlox100d ago

It’s a great controller. The only major issue is that the rubber grips will tear off eventually. But, you can get colored replacements from Extremerate. They come in multiple colors and are easy to install. Here’s a link to their site, if curious.

https://extremerate.com/

NautilusXIII99d ago

Same thing that happened to mine. I did buy the grips, but then later bought their controller shell the day they were available for purchase.

Bathyj100d ago (Edited 100d ago )

I would love to see first person shooters allow you to use the VR controllers as motion controllers. I just bought a gunstock for VR but how good would it be if you could use that in any first person or third person shooter?

Probably wouldn't work. It needs the headset for tracking. I can dream but, if you played it on the headset.

andy85100d ago

I have a giftcard and i want one as I have thumb issues sometimes so this will help a lot but I've been holding off for a discount. I can't believe it's not really had one yet since launch. Expected one on black Friday

FernDiggidy99d ago

I fucking looove this thing. A bit pricey But I love it.

GoodnessGreatness99d ago

It's a great controller but the battery life is absolutely terrible. 3 hours of gameplay and it's already low, it might as well be a wired controller 🤦‍♂️

DualSense Edge Users Play Games For Longer Periods On PS5, Shows Research

A study shows that DualSense Edge users are playing games for over 30 hours, with more sessions and variety compared to the rest on the PS5.

Jin_Sakai238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

When you spend $200 on a controller you tend to use it pretty often.

phoenixwing238d ago

Also the people who buy expensive controllers will be ppl more passionate about the video game hobby.

Eonjay237d ago

It makes sense that people playing more would desire a more durable controller.

Sonic1881237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

I like the fact if you get stick drift, you can replace the joysticks

Jin_Sakai237d ago

True, but you could literally buy 3 brand new DualSense controllers should you get stick drift for the price of the Edge controller.

Sonic1881237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

But what if you get stick drift with those controllers in the future. You will have to pay $70 dollars for a replacement. The dualsense edge joysticks 🕹 only cost $19.99 to replace

Stanjara237d ago

So increasing PsPlus prices are going to result in longer online playing?

IMissJimRyan237d ago

Of course, those willing to pay a lot of money for a controller are those that are deeper in addiction and dependence.

IMissJimRyan237d ago

People enjoy alcohol, drugs and a lot of stuff. But most people that buy an expensive controller are way beyond enjoying games and are truly addicted. When something become the thing you most spend time everyday after sleeping, that's an addiction.
You can say it's an escapism or something like it and it's true. But it's an addiction nonetheless. Like other addiction those who use it tend to deny they are dependent.

Tacoboto237d ago

If you think that about gamers why are you even on a gaming site?

IMissJimRyan237d ago

I just don't pretend that games are not an addiction.

Tacoboto237d ago

I guess the spatula and grill I bought are really just enablers to my grilling addiction...

You're full of wisdom.

Sephiroushin237d ago

I hardly play and when i do i usually use m&k but i have 2 elites ... You know some people won't break their bank for buying a "pro" controller which is more expensive... Also i am not addicted to work which is the thing i do the most after i wake up thanks.

Mr_cheese237d ago

Make it make sense.

Going straight to addiction as your reasoning shows more issues with you than it does with those you're trying to pin

Amplitude237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

@locomorales
That's a horrible and completely incorrect way of looking at this. Saying anybody that buys a good controller is addicted to video games on the same level as alcohol and drugs is bats**t insane lol

I have a $300 custom PS5 controller with 4 back paddles, swappable sticks and adjustable L2/R2 buttons as well as a third party XBox Elite knockoff controller but I only play games maybe a few times per week.
Hell, if Microsoft made an actual Elite controller and added gyro and a trackpad to it, I'd immediately go buy that right now no matter what the cost was (no controller exists that lets you map back 4 paddles to macros {like "Start Recording") in Steam like the Elite controller, but with gyro and a trackpad)

Once you get used to a good controller with back paddles it's really hard to go back to face buttons. Can't even move the camera while reloading or jumping! Insanity. I work full time, I'm not addicted to playing video games. I'd just rather drop the extra money for a controller that does what I want, feels nice for when I do play, arguably gives me a skill boost and lasts a long time. It's not for everyone but it's worth the cost to me and a lot of other non-video-game-addicted people.

Rimeskeem237d ago

Do you know what addiction and dependence are?

I’d imagine someone who spends 200 on a controller plays a lot of games… enough to seek out a 200 controller. This is kinda like saying people who buy cars spend more time driving cars.

Popsicle237d ago

Is this supposed to be a surprise?

“the DualSense Edge controller for the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling accessory of 2023 in the US in dollar sales.“

In dollar sales yes because it’s a whopping $200.

TheCaptainKuchiki262d ago

So? It could've flopped. Just because it's price is high doesn't guarantee a 1st place.

Jin_Sakai262d ago

Well I’m happy it’s selling well but I’m sure as heck not paying $200 for a controller.

Charlieboy333262d ago

@Jin Well you don't have to pay shit if you don't want to. Some people do. What is your point exactly?

262d ago
ChasterMies262d ago

Go to an Apple store and you’ll see PlayStation controllers. PlayStation has made a nice market of selling outside its console base.

S2Killinit262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

Its not surprising when you look at how many PS5s are being sold.

TheCaptainKuchiki262d ago

It is surprising because there was so assurance that it would sell well considering its price.
Obviously we need the volume ranking as well.

AmUnRa262d ago

You know that every PS5 comes with a controller...right?
Ps gamers who ae buying an extra controller do that cous they want to play with a friend localy ....right?
Some gamers want to pay $200 to have a small advantage comparing to the standard controller.

KwietStorm_BLM262d ago

Waited years for them to make this controller, but they only put 2 buttons on the back. So sticking with my scuf and bfg til they make a second gen. Considering PS5 sales, it's not a crazy surprise the controller has sold well though, because people like myself have wanted it. I think we're finally at a time where pads and input methods on console are catching on to modern game design.

persona4chie262d ago

It’s not terribly surprising, to me at least. Especially when you consider PS fans have wanted something like this for awhile that’s made by Sony. At least to my knowledge, neither MS or Nintendo have released any new types of accessories for their consoles anytime recently that scratches a certain itch and is made by them.

Plus when you factor in the more “hardcore” audience on PlayStation, especially with games like CoD it kinda makes sense. At least to me 🤷‍♂️
