I dont understand the hate tbh. If it had the game like most other collector editions, they would be charging $150-250 and would likely still just come with a code.

They are simply separating the collector content and people can buy the game in whatever version they want separately

If that were the case, I could understand the upset, but as you said, it's just if you have the game already and now want the collectors guff. Options are good!

@Tody_ZA Some people want the convenience of digital and a special edition boxed set- however it's too financially risky for the publisher to make box sets for each platform especially as it cannot predict which will sell the most. It might be that it orders 50% Xbox and 50% PlayStation special editions but then one format outsells the other so it's left with wasted stock. This is a way to offer the best of both worlds. Although it would be good if you could order the game to come with the box set.

@Mr Pumblechook Sounds like bull from EA's PR room, because nothing stops Activision giving you a digital code to download the game at the very least. Some at least give you a steel book with a download code.

I maintain the belief that a limited Collector's Edition should always come with a physical copy of the game, although this is becoming less of a thing with cross-gen and Sony's disc/discless PS5. But to not even come with the game at all even in digital form is just the worst treatment of fans.

Indeed, but all this opens the door to is more crap to spend money on with the knock-on effect being that Collector's Editions reduce in quality as publishers decide what to stick in the "box with no game edition" and what to stick in the Collector's Edition that features a game.

Here’s the caveat. It’s not a “Collector’s Edition”, it’s a “Collector’s Box”. The headline is misleading. It never actually states it as a version of the game’s release.

Going to completely disagree. Diablo has been the only blizzard franchise to not completely destroy its game with micros. Diablo 1 had no micros. Diablo 2 had one expansion. No micros. Diablo 3 had one expansion. And one micro for a new class (necro). Immortal (different diablo team) is a completely different platform, all mobile games live off micros. Diablo 4 will be fine.

Good move by a great publisher. For a game that sells 40m+ units, they need to ensure that players can get the product at launch and creating a "scalpers edition" is the best thing they can do. IMO it's these little details that Activision really nail that the likes of Sony need to really work on improving.

It's actually cheaper to be honest most collectors now a days range from 199.99 up to 400.00. Like this your only paying 99.99 and the game separate is 70.00. So 170.00 that's not bad at all. I understand the perception that this gives off of greedy developers trust me I get it. But in reality this is cheaper and hell if your patient enough to wait for Diablo 4 to go on sale you could get the game as low as 19.99 so your looking at 120.00 that's not bad at all.
