this time last gen, the gap between PS4 and XBO was 14.9m. the real surprise is how the series is nearly 400k in JP after two years where as the XBO only mustered 120k over its lifetime.

SullysCigar496d ago

Your view is pleasingly upbeat, but the XBO pretty much bombed, for a number of reasons.

In the same way, I'm sure at this stage Nintendo aren't patting themselves on the back due to Switch outselling WiiU.

I'm just glad PS and Xbox are somewhat closer this time around, as that might create some healthy competition.

crazyCoconuts496d ago

* Healthy Competition: the kind of competition that doesn't involve buying up the industry so that you can put your competition out of business

blackblades496d ago

Its only closer because of the shortage, bet money if covid and the shortage never happened it wouldve been a huge margin apart.

darthv72496d ago (Edited 496d ago )

@sully, I'm an optimist. I try to be upbeat in everything I do. It may not always come across that way... but I am. I know its way easier to be a pessimist and be negative, like your take on the XBO being a bomb. I disagree. sure it didnt beat the 360 but it didnt bomb either. Bombs would be things like the dreamcast, 3do, jaguar, wiiu, virtualboy... stuff that many can look back on and think fondly about what could have been had those platforms done things different. The xbo did okay for itself, 50m is nothing to scoff at compared to the aforementioned platforms but it wasnt as lucrative as the 360 & ps3.

SullysCigar496d ago

@darthv72, okay well I'm a realist, and the XBO bombed in many ways.

It made those (still low) sales with the trademark MS concoction of false hope and outright lies, abusing the goodwill of consumers. Pointing to even lesser successes throughout history doesn't detract from this.

Optimism's nice, but sometimes it's best to just be frank, especially with the benefit of hindsight.

As for crazyCoconuts and blackblades, I completely agree.

shinoff2183496d ago

Actually Darth

This day and age with millions upon millions more gaming. Xbox one did bomb. Straight tanked man.

Same talk every month. Last gen there wasn't any supply problems from day one.

Last gen Microsoft wasn't giving away the Xbox one like its doing with the s

Stanjara496d ago

And giving gamepass this whole time.

StarkR3ality496d ago

@sully @dark

You guys take every opportunity to bash Xbox instead of being glad that both are doing well.

Get both yourselves and the fact Xbox is selling like hot cakes. I'm glad both are doing well, just need Xbox to release some games and keep the heat on Sony. That way PS, Xbox and PC players get the best out of each platform.

darkrider496d ago

Sales and doing well are two things completely different... But i agree with you in one aspect. Just wait for the games...

SullysCigar496d ago

Did you miss this part of my comment?

"I'm just glad PS and Xbox are somewhat closer this time around, as that might create some healthy competition."

dcbronco495d ago

Darth it's just Sony fans way of admitting the ps3, 4 and 5 are bombs. Without having to say the words. Because if XBO was a who bomb because of lower sales then the next 3 Sony consoles were too because of sales. That's if you're dealing with consistent, honest people who make rational judgements and aren't spewing fanboy hate. That then whine for the government to come save them when a more financially strong company uses smart business tactics in the age of subscription services. Which they started in gaming. The fans of that other company might whine that it's not fair despite them lacking the ability to be honest about anything. They want a double standard for everything. As long as that double standard is always in their favor.

The real fight is in North America. Generally, the rest of the world is entrenched in the PlayStation ecosystem. What interests me is the breakdown of Xbox Series S versus Xbox Series S. If this underpowered console has significant marketshare, it will drive developer decisions.

StarkR3ality496d ago

I think somewhere I read it was a near 50/50 split, however that was a while ago and likelyhood is we will never know the true number. It's been a great strategy for Xbox shown by the numbers though.

Stanjara496d ago

I believe IMO that is 65% S by now.

StarkR3ality496d ago

@stan

The source actually said the hardware percentage would probably increase on the X side as production ramps up. Remember that the X is still hard to find at times, not as hard as the PS5 but still. It's stock always sells out.

SullysCigar496d ago

Seems more likely the price of the S alone would mean it would sell more than the X. It's already at dirt-cheap, impulse-buy prices and they're advertising it like mad in the run up to Christmas.

anast496d ago

PS5 is out selling two consoles, the S and the SX at the same time. Imagine if they only released the SX, It would have been even a worse beat down.

randomvoice495d ago

Curious to see how 2023 pans out. PS5 literally had a price increase outside US to meet demand and yet outsold the XSS which was literally given away at 200 odd during thanksgiving. If Sony can scale up the supply which they've already confirmed in 2023, they now have a lot more headroom for price cuts in the future. MS kinda blew their load with the XSS this black friday in order to stay competitive with the deep discounted sales.

Lol who is offended by it 1 percent of crying snowflakes of course..

blackblades4h ago

What did it mean? Considering I'm in my own world these days.

Christopher2h ago

Hard R is typically a reference to the N-word with the hard r at the end.

Eonjay1h ago

Do you really not know this is about the n-word or are you saying that black people can't get offended because it upsets you?

Christopher2h ago

I can't believe they're censoring this game on day 1. Games just aren't the same.

/s in case it's needed. I'm fine with them making these changes that they might not have known is culturally insensitive to some people in the big ole world. But that's just me.

VersusDMC1h ago

They are censoring something that is deemed offensive by Journalists quoting the offensive term verbatim. They are typing it intentionally in articles while in the game it's a wall texture saying Hard next to a unrelated 3d model sign that says R store. Is it offensive or not? Crazy town.

At least IGN just shows the term with a screenshot of the game. Because it's their "discovery" and to not show hypocrisy in their HUGE vitue signal.
Hard R is the not offensive way to describe an offensive term. Are they going to type "Ha$$ R" or not use the term now?

Christopher1h ago

Oh, hey, I agree with you that IGN and other journalists are dumb. Not disagreement there. But, I think for a game going out to millions of people across the world? It's not something they want associated with them. It's just horrific PR.

Tacoboto48m ago

Add to the horrific PR nightmare that this is the first major Korean-developed Sony-published title, if I'm not mistaken.

There aren't that many Korean developed titles in general. And the allowance of this only would drive a bigger fissure in east vs west especially after Final Fantasy XVI released featuring no black characters at all...

Not a good look for Sony regardless of how you personally feel about it or the people that talk about it.

VersusDMC15m ago

I'm not saying it shouldn't have been changed. It's an easy fix and looks like it was an easy fix.

But the word HARD being too close to the letter R being a horrific PR nightmare and a indication of a racist developer is beyond crazy.

Stevonidas1h ago

Pre-order cancelled. They were so close.... then they had to go and bend the knee.

Eonjay1h ago

If you can't enjoy the game without knowing there are racial slurs plastered on the walls, you might actually be the snowflake.

Tacoboto1h ago

"Hey why didn't you get that game? I heard it's got that hot Korean chick?"

"I was gonna, but then they removed a reference to the N word!"

Crows901h ago

I'm offended by the sight of blood a d violence and find violence to be very insensitive...

We can all play stupid and pretend to be offended by graphics and fake worlds.

DFresh6m ago

I really enjoyed the demo.
I'm going to play through and max out on story mode then go to the challenge mode afterwards.
This game is very challenging but fun.
Especially for timing on the parrying and blocking.
Got the Deluxe Digital Edition (PS5) pre ordered.
